Cartels as Two-Stage Mechanisms: Implications for the Analysis of Dominant-Firm Conduct
In this Article we propose that monopolization conduct be analyzed through the lens of cartel behavior. Although cartels typically suppress interfirm rivalry, in many instances this is not their sole focus. Many cartels operate as two-stage mechanisms. The first stage consists of reaching a consensus on a plan to restrict output or otherwise curb rivalry. For many cartels, once interfirm rivalry is addressed, the cartel moves to the second stage of activity, in which it uses exclusionary behavior often featured in monopolization cases to ensure the effectiveness of its efforts to restrict output. To illustrate this phenomenon, we draw upon the records of cartel inquiries to provide examples of cartels engaging in overt predation against non-cartel rivals, leveraging into both downstream and horizontally-related markets, exclusively dealing, blocking entry, bundling, tying, raising rivals\u27 costs, and other conduct typically associated with allegations of monopolization

Mitral Annulus Segmentation From Three-Dimensional Ultrasound
An accurate and reproducible segmentation of the mitral valve annulus from 3D ultrasound is useful to clinicians and researchers in applications such as pathology diagnosis and mitral valve modeling. Current segmentation methods, however, are based on 2D information, resulting in inaccuracies and a lack of spatial coherence. We present a segmentation algorithm which, given a single user-specified point near the center of the valve, uses maxflow and active contour methods to delineate the annulus geometry in 3D. Preliminary comparisons to manual segmentations and a sensitivity study show the algorithm is both accurate and robust.Engineering and Applied Science
A retroperitoneal abscess caused by Haemophilus parainfluenza after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and open cholecystectomy with a common bile duct exploration: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Abscesses after open cholecystectomies have been reported to occur in less than 1% of patients. The majority of these abscesses are colonized by gastrointestinal tract flora. It is clearly known that <it>Haemophilus parainfluenza </it>is a normal inhabitant of the human respiratory tract. However, its origin and route of transmission into the gastrointestinal tract is unknown.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the case of a 68-year-old Caucasian female who developed a retroperitoneal abscess caused by <it>H. parainfluenza </it>after open cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration. This presented nearly five weeks post-operatively. She underwent a second operation to drain the abscess, and was subsequently placed on appropriate antibiotics.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A retroperitoneal abscess due to <it>H. parainfluenza </it>is extremely rare. It is a normal inhabitant of the human respiratory tract. To the best of our knowledge, there have been only a few reported cases of these abscesses, and they mainly involve the psoas muscle. The retroperitoneal abscess originated from the oropharynx, most likely after the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was performed. With the advent of Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery, oral decontamination will need to be considered to decrease the potential for such infections.</p
A 4.8- and 8.6-GHz Survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud: I The Images
Detailed 4.8- and 8.6-GHz radio images of the entire Large Magellanic Cloud
with half-power beamwidths of 33" at 4.8 GHz and 20" at 8.6 GHz have been
obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. A total of 7085 mosaic
positions were used to cover an area of 6 degrees on a side. Full polarimetric
observations were made. These images have sufficient spatial resolution (~8 and
5 pc, respectively) and sensitivity (3-sigma of 1 mJy/beam) to identify most of
the individual SNRs and H II regions and also, in combination with available
data from the Parkes 64-m telescope, the structure of the smooth emission in
that galaxy. In addition, limited data using the sixth antenna at 4.5 to 6-km
baselines are available to distinguish bright point sources (<3 and 2 arcsec,
respectively) and to help estimate sizes of individual sources smaller than the
resolution of the full survey. The resultant database will be valuable for
statistical studies and comparisons with x-ray, optical and infrared surveys of

Predictors and outcomes of crossover to surgery from physical therapy for meniscal tear and osteoarthritis a randomized trial comparing physical therapy and surgery
BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) combined with physical therapy (PT) have yielded pain relief similar to that provided by PT alone in randomized trials of subjects with a degenerative meniscal tear. However, many patients randomized to PT received APM before assessment of the primary outcome. We sought to identify factors associated with crossing over to APM and to compare pain relief between patients who had crossed over to APM and those who had been randomized to APM. METHODS: We used data from the MeTeOR (Meniscal Tear in Osteoarthritis Research) Trial of APM with PT versus PT alone in subjects ≥45 years old who had mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis and a degenerative meniscal tear. We assessed independent predictors of crossover to APM among those randomized to PT. We also compared pain relief at 6 months among those randomized to PT who crossed over to APM, those who did not cross over, and those originally randomized to APM. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-four subjects were randomized to and received APM and 177 were randomized to PT, of whom 48 (27%) crossed over to receive APM in the first 140 days after randomization. In multivariate analyses, factors associated with a higher likelihood of crossing over to APM among those who had originally been randomized to PT included a baseline Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) Pain Score of ≥40 (risk ratio [RR] = 1.99; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00, 3.93) and symptom duration of <1 year (RR = 1.74; 95% CI = 0.98, 3.08). Eighty-one percent of subjects who crossed over to APM and 82% of those randomized to APM had an improvement of ≥10 points in their pain score at 6 months, as did 73% of those who were randomized to and received only PT. CONCLUSIONS: Subjects who crossed over to APM had presented with a shorter symptom duration and greater baseline pain than those who did not cross over from PT. Subjects who crossed over had rates of surgical success similar to those of the patients who had been randomized to surgery. Our findings also suggest that an initial course of rigorous PT prior to APM may not compromise surgical outcome. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic Level II. Targeted microbubbles: a novel application for the treatment of kidney stones
Kidney stone disease is endemic. Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy was the first major technological breakthrough where focused shockwaves were used to fragment stones in the kidney or ureter. The shockwaves induced the formation of cavitation bubbles, whose collapse released energy at the stone, and the energy fragmented the kidney stones into pieces small enough to be passed spontaneously. Can the concept of microbubbles be used without the bulky machine? The logical progression was to manufacture these powerful microbubbles ex vivo and inject these bubbles directly into the collecting system. An external source can be used to induce cavitation once the microbubbles are at their target; the key is targeting these microbubbles to specifically bind to kidney stones. Two important observations have been established: (i) bisphosphonates attach to hydroxyapatite crystals with high affinity; and (ii) there is substantial hydroxyapatite in most kidney stones. The microbubbles can be equipped with bisphosphonate tags to specifically target kidney stones. These bubbles will preferentially bind to the stone and not surrounding tissue, reducing collateral damage. Ultrasound or another suitable form of energy is then applied causing the microbubbles to induce cavitation and fragment the stones. This can be used as an adjunct to ureteroscopy or percutaneous lithotripsy to aid in fragmentation. Randall's plaques, which also contain hydroxyapatite crystals, can also be targeted to pre-emptively destroy these stone precursors. Additionally, targeted microbubbles can aid in kidney stone diagnostics by virtue of being used as an adjunct to traditional imaging methods, especially useful in high-risk patient populations. This novel application of targeted microbubble technology not only represents the next frontier in minimally invasive stone surgery, but a platform technology for other areas of medicine
Probing Unstable Massive Neutrinos with Current Cosmic Microwave Background Observations
The pattern of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background depends upon
the masses and lifetimes of the three neutrino species. A neutrino species of
mass greater than 10 eV with lifetime between 10^{13} sec and 10^{17} sec
leaves a very distinct signature (due to the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect):
the anisotropies at large angles are predicted to be comparable to those on
degree scales. Present data exclude such a possibility and hence this region of
parameter space. For eV, sec, we find
an interesting possibility: the Integrated Sachs Wolfe peak produced by the
decaying neutrino in low- models mimics the acoustic peak expected in

Predictive Statistical Cost Estimation Model for Existing Single Family Home Elevation Projects
One of the most preferred flood mitigation techniques for existing homes is raising the elevation of the lowest floor above the base flood elevation (BFE). Determination of project effectiveness through benefit-cost analysis (BCA) relies on the expected avoided flood loss and the project cost. Conventional construction cost estimates are highly detailed, considering specific details of the project; however, mitigation project decisions must often be made while considering only highly generalized building details. To provide a robust, generalized project cost estimation method, this paper implements data modeling and mining methods such as multiple regression, random forest, generalized additive model (GAM), and model evaluation and selection with cross-validation methods to hindcast elevation costs for existing single-family homes based on average floor area, increase in floor elevation, number of stories, and foundation type. Project cost data for homes elevated in Louisiana, United States, between 2005 and 2015 are used in cost prediction analysis. The statistical modeling results are compared with detailed estimations for several types of home foundations over a range of elevations. The results show substantial agreement between regression predictions and detailed estimates using RSMeans cost data
Evolution of endogenous retrovirus-like elements of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) and its relatives
Endogenous retrovirus-like elements characterizable by a leucine tRNA primer (ERV-Ls) are reiterated genomic sequences known to be widespread in mammals, including humans. They may have arisen from an ancestral foamy virus-like element by successful germ line infection followed by copy number expansion. However, among mammals, only primates and rodents have thus far exhibited high copy number amplification and sequence diversification. Conventionally, empirical studies of proviral amplification and diversification have been limited to extant species, but taxa having good Quaternary fossil records could potentially be investigated using the techniques of ''ancient'' DNA research. To examine evolutionary parameters of ERV-Ls across both time and taxa, we characterized this proviral class in the extinct woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) and living elephants, as well as extant members of the larger clade to which they belong (Uranotheria, a group containing proboscideans, sirenians, hyraxes, and their extinct relatives). Ungulates and carnivores previously analyzed demonstrated low copy numbers of ERV-L sequences, and thus it was expected that uranotheres should as well. Here, we show that all uranothere taxa exhibit unexpectedly numerous and diverse ERV-L sequence complements, indicating active expansion within this group of lineages. Selection is the most parsimonious explanation for observed differences in ERV-L distribution and frequency, with relative success being reflected in the persistence of certain elements over a variety of sampled time depths (as can be observed by comparing sequences from fossil and extant elephantid samples)
