The white straw hat trimmed with delicately tinted silk organza petals and a narrow green velvet ribbon that Suzanne Dahlmeier, T.C. 3, will be wearing this Easter may look like a French Room creation but it isn\u27t. Willa Cather and Eugene O\u27Neill: A bond of tragedy

Liberation, emancipation, freedom--all have been used to describe the particular nature of the United States’ post World War One era; certainly, the period manifested these characteristics, but along with its revolution in manners and morals, the roar of the 1920s brought with it a renaissance in American literature. Primarily, the time was one of the foremost and limitless variety: a time when writers, freed from tradition by the catalyst of war, could experiment with new forms and techniques; a time when they could reject nineteenth-century idealism in favor for criticism; a time when they could explain man\u27s behavior with the new psychology of Freud, and a time when they could record the effects of science, technology, and urbanization upon a nation previously agrarian and self-contained. The height of the American drama was reached during this period, and the direction of American poetry would never be the same following Elliott\u27s The Wasteland. Still, the age is remembered as one of frantic gaiety and frivolous pastime

Observations of the ultraviolet-bright star Y453 in the globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121)

    Get PDF
We present a spectral analysis of the UV-bright star Y453 in M4. Model fits to the star´s optical spectrum yield Teff ∼ 56,000 K. Fits to the star´s FUV spectrum, obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope, reveal it to be considerably hotter, with Teff ∼ 72,000 K. We adopt Teff = 72,000 ± 2000 K and log g = 5.7 ± 0.2 as our best-fit parameters. Scaling the model spectrum to match the star´s optical and near-infrared magnitudes, we derive a mass M∗ = 0.53±0.24 M⊙ and luminosity = log L/L⊙ 2.84±0.05, consistent with the values expected of an evolved star in a globular cluster. Comparing the star with post-horizontal-branch evolutionary tracks, we conclude that it most likely evolved from the blue horizontal branch, departing the asymptotic giant branch before third dredge-up. It should thus exhibit the abundance pattern (O-poor and Na-rich) characteristic of the second-generation (SG) stars in M4. We derive the star´s photospheric abundances of He, C, N, O, Si, S, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Ni. CNO abundances are roughly 0.25 dex greater than those of the cluster´s SG stars, while the Si and S abundances match the cluster values. Abundances of the iron-peak elements (except for iron itself) are enhanced by 1-3 dex. Rather than revealing the star´s origin and evolution, this pattern reflects the combined effects of diffusive and mechanical processes in the stellar atmosphere.Fil: Dixon, William V.. Modern Legislation, Metropolitan Court, Miniscule Results: A Study of Detroit\u27s Landlord-Tenant Court

    Get PDF
This article is a description of a study of cases filed and tried in the Detroit, Michigan, Common Pleas Court, Landlord-Tenant Division, during 1970 and 1971. The court is in a large urban center and handles a high volume of cases, in most of which one or both parties appear without an attorney. The impetus for the study was Michigan legislation passed in 1968, which gave tenants additional defenses to summary eviction procedures. The main goal of the study was to observe the effects of the legislation on tenants who were subject to summary proceedings in Detroit. The purpose of the study was not just an analysis of landlord-tenant law or practices per se, but also the more general inquiry into the administration of justice and practical effects of reform legislation

Achieving Equity in Education: A Restorative Justice Approach

    Get PDF
The critical role of education in making the United States a more equitable nation underscores the importance of eliminating the persistent academic achievement gap between students of color and White students. A school culture that fosters trusting relationships can play a key role in reducing this gap. This importance of trusting relationships at the core of school culture has, however, not always been recognized nor prioritized in policies and actions. Restorative justice, a philosophy based on repairing harm and creating a sense of belonging in a community, brings the discussion of trusting relationships into the public forum. This paper discusses how restorative practices are being used in a series of town halls for high school students in a central Oregon school district to build trusting relationships for students of color and to give them the tools to create systemic change in their schools around race and ethnicity. The paper adds to the relatively small, albeit growing, body of research on the relationship between the use of restorative practices and increased school engagement among students of color who are most vulnerable to school failure. Given the significant role of educational institutions as engines driving fairness and social justice, the paper also contributes to the literature on social equity, the fourth pillar of Public Administration
