Exploring the impact of participative place-based community archaeology in rural Europe: Community archaeology in rural environments meeting societal challenges
This paper reviews the aims, context, approach and early outcomes of a
new transnational participative archaeology project focussed on rural
village communities. âCommunity Archaeology in Rural Environments
Meeting Societal Challengesâ (CARE-MSoC) includes three European
countries where participative community archaeology is new- the Czech
Republic, the Netherlands and Poland. CARE-MSoC aims to explore the
feasibility, value and impact of excavation by rural residents within their
home communities by using a method which can be deployed
anywhere and which in the UK has been shown to advance knowledge
of the past while also delivering a wide range of social and heritage
benefits: multiple test pit excavation within inhabited villages. Data
presented here from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Poland
show the activity to be popular and effective here in benefitting people
while also attracting, sustaining and growing local interest in heritage
participation in all three countries
Staeckel systems generating coupled KdV hierarchies and their finite-gap and rational solutions
We show how to generate coupled KdV hierarchies from Staeckel separable
systems of Benenti type. We further show that solutions of these Staeckel
systems generate a large class of finite-gap and rational solutions of cKdV
hierarchies. Most of these solutions are new.Comment: 15 page
The occurrence of wakefieldite, a rare earth element vanadate, in the rhyolitic Joe Lott Tuff, Utah, USA
The high-silica rhyolitic Joe Lott Tuff was erupted at 19.2 ± 0.4 Ma from the Mount Belknap caldera, SW Utah. Certain units in the tuff contain two species of wakefieldite, the Nd- A nd Y-dominant types. They occur in disseminated streaks and patches in association with rhodochrosite, calcite, Fe oxide, cerite-(Ce), and a Mn silicate (caryopilite?), thought to have been deposited from hydrothermal fluids. The wakefieldites contain the highest levels of As (â€15.34 wt.% As2O5) and P (â€5.7 wt.% P2O5) yet recorded in this mineral, indicating significant solid solution towards chernovite-(Y) and xenotime-(Y). Thorium levels are also unusually high (â€14.2 wt.% ThO2). The source of the hydrothermal fluid(s) is unknown but might be related to uranium mineralisation in the region, in that As, V and U are commonly associated in such deposits. © 2019 Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland
Activation-dependent substrate recruitment by the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 kinase PERK.
Regulated phosphorylation of the alpha subunit of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2alpha) by the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-activated protein kinase PERK modulates protein synthesis and couples the production of ER client proteins with the organelle's capacity to fold and process them. PERK activation by ER stress is known to involve transautophosphorylation, which decorates its unusually long kinase insert loop with multiple phosphoserine and phosphothreonine residues. We report that PERK activation and phosphorylation selectively enhance its affinity for the nonphosphorylated eIF2 complex. This switch correlates with a marked change to the protease sensitivity pattern, which is indicative of a major conformational change in the PERK kinase domain upon activation. Although it is dispensable for catalytic activity, PERK's kinase insert loop is required for substrate binding and for eIF2alpha phosphorylation in vivo. Our findings suggest a novel mechanism for eIF2 recruitment by activated PERK and for unidirectional substrate flow in the phosphorylation reaction
A possible role of tachykinin-related peptide on an immune system activity of mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor L.
Tachykinin-related peptides (TRPs) are important neuropeptides. Here we show that they affect the insect immune system, especially the cellular response. We also identify and predict the sequence and structure of the tachykinin-related peptide receptor (TRPR) and confirm the presence of expression of gene encoding TRPR on Tenebrio molitor haemocytes. After application of the Tenmo-TRP-7 in T. molitor the number of circulating haemocytes increased and the number of haemocytes participating in phagocytosis of latex beads decreased in a dose- and time-dependent fashion. Also, Tenmo-TRP-7 affects the adhesion ability of haemocytes. Six hours after injection of TenmoTRP-7, a decrease of haemocyte surface area was observed under both tested Tenmo-TRP-7 concentrations (10-7 and 10-5 M). The opposite effect was reported 24 h after injection, which indicates that the influence of Tenmo-TRP-7 on modulation of haemocyte behaviour differs at different stages of stress response. Tenmo-TRP-7 application also resulted in increased phenoloxidase activity 6 and 24 h after injection. The assessment of DNA integrity of haemocytes showed that the injection of Tenmo-TRP-7 at 10-7 M led to a decrease in DNA damage compared to control individuals. This effect was only visible 6 h after Tenmo-TRP-7 application. After 24 h, Tenmo-TRP-7 injection increased DNA damage. We also confirmed the expression of immune-related genes in nervous tissue of T. molitor. Transcripts for genes encoding receptors participating in pathogen recognition processes and antimicrobial peptides were detected in T. molitor brain, retrocerebral complex and ventral nerve cord. These results may indicate a role of the insect nervous system in pathogen recognition and modulation of immune response similar to vertebrates. Taken together, our results support the notion that tachykinin-related peptides probably play an important role in the regulation of the insect immune system. Moreover, some resemblances with action of tachykininrelated peptides and substance P showed that insects can be potential model organisms for analysis of hormonal regulation of conserved innate immune mechanisms

The Genetics of Pneumothorax.
A genetic influence on spontaneous pneumothoraces-those occurring without a traumatic or iatrogenic cause-is supported by several lines of evidence: 1) pneumothorax can cluster in families (i.e., familial spontaneous pneumothorax), 2) mutations in the FLCN gene have been found in both familial and sporadic cases, and 3) pneumothorax is a known complication of several genetic syndromes. Herein, we review known genetic contributions to both sporadic and familial pneumothorax. We summarize the pneumothorax-associated genetic syndromes, including Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, Marfan syndrome, vascular (type IV) Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, tuberous sclerosis complex/lymphangioleiomyomatosis, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, cystic fibrosis, homocystinuria, and cutis laxa, among others. At times, pneumothorax is their herald manifestation. These syndromes have serious potential extrapulmonary complications (e.g., malignant renal tumors in Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome), and surveillance and/or treatment is available for most disorders; thus, establishing a diagnosis is critical. To facilitate this, we provide an algorithm to guide the clinician in discerning which cases of spontaneous pneumothorax may have a genetic or familial contribution, which cases warrant genetic testing, and which cases should prompt an evaluation by a geneticist
Mapping the X-Ray Emission Region in a Laser-Plasma Accelerator
The x-ray emission in laser-plasma accelerators can be a powerful tool to
understand the physics of relativistic laser-plasma interaction. It is shown
here that the mapping of betatron x-ray radiation can be obtained from the
x-ray beam profile when an aperture mask is positioned just beyond the end of
the emission region. The influence of the plasma density on the position and
the longitudinal profile of the x-ray emission is investigated and compared to
particle-in-cell simulations. The measurement of the x-ray emission position
and length provides insight on the dynamics of the interaction, including the
electron self-injection region, possible multiple injection, and the role of
the electron beam driven wakefield.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
