    Arthroscopic Technique to Treat Articular Cartilage Lesions in the Patellofemoral Joint

    Cartilage lesions are frequent in routine knee arthroscopy (63%). Among these injuries, 11–23% are located in patella and 6–15% in the trochlea. Treatment of cartilage lesions in patellofemoral joint (PFJ) represents a challenge because of its complex access, high axial loading, and shearing forces. These factors explain the 7% of good results in the PFJ versus 90% in femoral condyles for autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). Microfracture (MF) as the first line of treatment has revealed limited hyaline-like cartilage formation in comparison to ACI. This fibrocartilage deteriorates with the time resulting in inferior biomechanical properties. Important issues that enhance the results of cartilage repair procedures in PFJ are associated with the restoration of the joint balance as unloading/realigning techniques. In the literature, there is no description of any convenient arthroscopic technique for ACI. The reported techniques usually require to set up the patient in prone position to perform the arthroscopy making it difficult to treat associated knee malalignment or instability. Others are open techniques with more risk of morbidities, pain, and complications and longer recovery time. In this chapter, we will describe a novel all-arthroscopic technique to treat cartilage lesions in the patella that permits the correction and treatment of associated lesions in the same patient position

    Stem cells and tissue engineering: an alternative treatment for craniofacial congenital malformations and articular degenerative diseases

    The life quality of patients with craniofacial malformations is severely affected by the physical disabilities caused by the malformation itself, but also by being subjected to bullying, which leads to a series of relevant psychological and societal effects that have an economic impact on the health sector. Orofacial clefts, notably cleft lip (CL), cleft palate, and microtia, are the most common craniofacial birth defects in humans and represent a substantial burden, both personal and societal. On the other hand, osteoarthritis is a widespread degenerative disease that is becoming more common due to the extension of the human lifespan and to an increase in injuries in young people as a result of their lifestyle. Advances in tissue engineering as a part of regenerative medicine offer new hope to patients that can benefit from new tissue engineering therapies based on the supportive action of tailored 3D biomaterials and the synergic action of stem cells that can be driven to the process of bone and cartilage regeneration. This review provides an update on recent considerations for stem cells and studies on the use of advanced biomaterials and cell therapies for the regeneration of craniofacial congenital malformations and articular degenerative diseases

    The Sonozotz project: Assembling an echolocation call library for bats in a megadiverse country

    Bat acoustic libraries are important tools that assemble echolocation calls to allow the comparison and discrimination to confirm species identifications. The Sonozotz project represents the first nation-wide library of bat echolocation calls for a megadiverse country. It was assembled following a standardized recording protocol that aimed to cover different recording habitats, recording techniques, and call variation inherent to individuals. The Sonozotz project included 69 species of echolocating bats, a high species richness that represents 50% of bat species found in the country. We include recommendations on how the database can be used and how the sampling methods can be potentially replicated in countries with similar environmental and geographic conditions. To our knowledge, this represents the most exhaustive effort to date to document and compile the diversity of bat echolocation calls for a megadiverse country. This database will be useful to address a range of ecological questions including the effects of anthropogenic activities on bat communities through the analysis of bat sound.</p
