Kremlin Disinformation Discourse: Media Coverage of the Plane Hijack by Belarus on 23 May 2021
CC BY 4.0This paper approaches Kremlin disinformation from a theoretical perspective encompassing
key tenets of media discourse analysis, Systemic Functional Linguistics, the Appraisal theory, and
research on propaganda and disinformation. On 23 May 2021, the Ryanair flight 4978 flying from
Athens to Vilnius was intercepted by a Belarusian warplane and forced to land in Minsk. Afterward,
a Belarusian dissident journalist, Roman Protasevich, was detained. This paper aims to contribute to
Kremlin disinformation research with insights from Systemic Functional Linguistics and the Appraisal
theory. The Appraisal theory is used to discern the specific disinformation strategy employed in
compromised media publications covering the forced landing. The main disinformation strategy
observed in the dataset revolves around deflecting the targets of moral and axiological evaluation
and undermining audience’s sense of truthfulness

views and knowledge, and shape attitudes, beliefs, and opinions that lead to the specific
decisions and actions of individuals and groups. This article gives an overview of developments in the composite concept of media and information literacy and the premises
of systemic functional linguistics that are relevant under the conditions of the current
infodemic. The authors of this paper propose an approach that combines functional and
social-cognitive elements, aiming to explain how we become susceptible to mis- and disinformation and to raise awareness of how certain discursive practices become embedded in societal life. For media and information literacy to be a fully-fledged concept,
it is vital to consider the ability to discern subjectivity and emotion in post-truth narratives. The notion of narrative as a cognitive structure is also fundamental because

Teaching ESP (English for Specific Purposes) or professional language is essential at the university level. It focuses on the language largely specific to a subject and contains context-bound items used by learners in the classroom to express and understand curricular concepts. However, researchers continue to provide evidence showing that eventually productive language skills (speaking and writing) and comprehension skills (reading and listening) are not all mastered equally in ESP classroom. Sometimes students may not have enough chances to initiate a conversation in the classroom setting. A cooperative approach might seem to be the solution that enables enhancement of interaction and communication. Interaction in the classroom influences academic, cognitive and social development of students. Participation in group discussion provides students with opportunities to use content based language in a meaningful context. Through discussion and negotiation they have a chance to paraphrase and explain the key concepts which aid in their learning. Students also relate the newly received information with acquired information. Group discussions enhance the cognition processes through thought provoking and challenging exchange of ideas. Students have to react immediately, shape ideas in their cognition processes. In addition, group work helps to increase motivation while creating real life situations where opinions are shared and shaped. In the process of group dynamics students focus on peer interaction, learning social skills (active listening, giving opinions, encouragement, etc.) which shapes their interaction with the teacher as well. To sum up, teachers can improve students’ competences immensely in ESP classroom by implementing cooperative learning.

Media perform a fundamental role in contemporary society: being intermediaries between users and the real world, they replace physical experience, construct views and knowledge, and shape attitudes, beliefs, and opinions that lead to the specific decisions and actions of individuals and groups. Medijų raštingumas aukštajame moksle
Due to the impacts of dense mediatisation of knowledge construction, learning and teaching,
human behaviour patterns and ways of knowledge construction have radically changed. Media literacy
allows one to search for, select, sort and critically evaluate quality of multimodal information
and avoid being overwhelmed, lost, or misinformed amidst uncontrollable information flows under
the conditions of information overabundance and information overload. The aim of the thesis is to
construct a grounded theory of media literacy in higher education in order to account for university
students’ actual use of multimodal media texts for learning and the related challenges imposed by
heavily mediated environment of knowledge construction. The research methodology applied in
this research is the constructivist grounded theory. The research results indicate that media literacy
is directly related to major social practices of an individual (active citizenship, responsible creation
of social relations, learning), conscious and purposive construction of knowledge, application of
media literacy skills in daily activities acquired due to media education, a constant improvement
of quality information search skills and a constant critical appraisal of all multimodal information
and media that are employed in information search and knowledge construction. The Sandglass
theory encompasses two conceptual categories – morphing and anchoring – that subsume multiple
and diverse dimensions of literacy that is broad in terms of its scope (i.e. literacy is seen as essentially
related to media literacy skills). The conceptual framework has been developed bearing in
mind higher education settings in particular.Dėl medijų poveikio žinių konstravimui mokymas(si), žmogaus elgesio modeliai ir žinių konstravimo
