Tracing the Initiation of the Tribeč Mountain Exhumation by Laser-Probe 40Ar/39Ar Dating of Seismogenic Pseudotachylytes (Western Carpathians, Slovakia)

The seismogenic pseudotachylytes from the Tribeč Mountains (Western Carpathians, Slovakia) were dated by means of the laser microprobe 40Ar/39Ar method. The Tribeč Mountain crystalline basement was buried to 5–7.5-km depths, where it experienced approximately >110°C and <210°C thermal conditions. The dated pseudotachylytes have spot ages between 58 ± 1 and 46 ± 1 Ma with a weighted mean age of 49.7 ± 1.3 Ma, indicating that seismic activity caused their origin, the propagation of subvertical basement marginal faults, and/or the inception of basement unroofing processes in the southern part of the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin. The extensional tectonics were responsible for the exhumation of basement highs and the opening of the intramontane depressions on the northwest margin of the Pannonian Basin

Duration of unemployment benefits and quality of post-unemployment jobs : evidence from a natural experiment

This paper investigates how the potential duration of unemployment benefits affects the quality of post-unemployment jobs. It takes advantage of a natural experiment introduced by a change in Slovenia's unemployment insurance law that substantially reduced the potential benefit duration. Although this reduction strongly increased job finding rates, the quality of the post-unemployment jobs remained unaffected. The paper finds that the law change had no effect on the type of contract (temporary versus permanent), the duration of the post-unemployment job, or the wage earned in the job.Labor Markets,Youth and Governance,Economic Theory&Research,Social Protections&Assistance,Social Risk Management

Filamentary Large-scale Structure Traced by Six Lyα Blobs at z = 2.3

Extended nebulae of Lyα emission ("Lyα blobs") are known to be associated with overdense regions at high redshift. Here we present six large Lyα blobs in a previously known protocluster with galaxy overdensity δ ~ 7 at z = 2.3; this is the richest field of giant Lyα blobs detected to date. The blobs have linear sizes of ≳ 100 kpc and Lyα luminosities of ~10^(43) erg s^(–1). The positions of the blobs define two linear filaments with an extent of at least 12 comoving Mpc; these filaments intersect at the center of one of the blobs. Measurement of the position angles of the blobs indicates that five of the six are aligned with these filaments to within ~10°, suggesting a connection between the physical processes powering extended Lyα emission and those driving structure on larger scales

Beyond Europe: Alternative visions of Europe amongst young activists in self-managed spaces in Italy

This article explores the attitude towards Europe of young activists in self-managed spaces in Italy, and the extent to which the crises the EU endured in the last decade shape their visions. Unlike pre-financial crisis social movements, in the second decade of the 2000s progressive social movements adopted radical Eurocritical attitudes and shifted towards Eurosceptic positions. The article indicates that young activists in Italian self-managed spaces mainly criticise the economic element of the European integration process and the functioning of the EU institutions. They still refer to the European sphere as the principal field of political intervention, but propose an alternative organisational model oriented by the principles of democratic confederalism and libertarian municipalism in which local, autonomous communities are horizontally connected. This article contributes to the study of Europeanisation and social movements literature by shedding light on a political alternative to the EU grounded on prefigurative practices and a self-managed society
