    Vortex-Antivortex Lattice in Ultra-Cold Fermi Gases

    We discuss ultra-cold Fermi gases in two dimensions, which could be realized in a strongly confining one-dimensional optical lattice. We obtain the temperature versus effective interaction phase diagram for an s-wave superfluid and show that, below a certain critical temperature T_c, spontaneous vortex-antivortex pairs appear for all coupling strengths. In addition, we show that the evolution from weak to strong coupling is smooth, and that the system forms a square vortex-antivortex lattice at a lower critical temperature T_M.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Quantum Non-Demolition Test of Bipartite Complementarity

    We present a quantum circuit that implements a non-demolition measurement of complementary single- and bi-partite properties of a two-qubit system: entanglement and single-partite visibility and predictability. The system must be in a pure state with real coefficients in the computational basis, which allows a direct operational interpretation of those properties.     Temperature scaling in a dense vibro-fluidised granular material

    The leading order "temperature" of a dense two dimensional granular material fluidised by external vibrations is determined. An asymptotic solution is obtained where the particles are considered to be elastic in the leading approximation. The velocity distribution is a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution in the leading approximation. The density profile is determined by solving the momentum balance equation in the vertical direction, where the relation between the pressure and density is provided by the virial equation of state. The predictions of the present analysis show good agreement with simulation results at higher densities where theories for a dilute vibrated granular material, with the pressure-density relation provided by the ideal gas law, are in error.     Experimental evidence of shock mitigation in a Hertzian tapered chain

    We present an experimental study of the mechanical impulse propagation through a horizontal alignment of elastic spheres of progressively decreasing diameter ϕn\phi_n, namely a tapered chain. Experimentally, the diameters of spheres which interact via the Hertz potential are selected to keep as close as possible to an exponential decrease, ϕn+1=(1q)ϕn\phi_{n+1}=(1-q)\phi_n, where the experimental tapering factor is either q15.60q_1\simeq5.60~% or q28.27q_2\simeq8.27~%. In agreement with recent numerical results, an impulse initiated in a monodisperse chain (a chain of identical beads) propagates without shape changes, and progressively transfer its energy and momentum to a propagating tail when it further travels in a tapered chain. As a result, the front pulse of this wave decreases in amplitude and accelerates. Both effects are satisfactorily described by the hard spheres approximation, and basically, the shock mitigation is due to partial transmissions, from one bead to the next, of momentum and energy of the front pulse. In addition when small dissipation is included, a better agreement with experiments is found. A close analysis of the loading part of the experimental pulses demonstrates that the front wave adopts itself a self similar solution as it propagates in the tapered chain. Finally, our results corroborate the capability of these chains to thermalize propagating impulses and thereby act as shock absorbing devices.Comment: ReVTeX, 7 pages with 6 eps, accepted for Phys.     A bactéria Pseudomonas putida tem se mostrado hábil na degradação de vários xenobióticos, porém são poucos os estudos a respeito da segurança de seu uso para a saúde humana. A fim de avaliar os possíveis efeitos toxicopatológicos da bactéria, uma linhagem de P. putida, envolvida na biodegradação do herbicida propanil, foi administrada a ratos, em suspensões de 108 ufc mL?1 via oral. Os animais foram observados diariamente, não havendo alterações clínicas ou quaisquer lesões em órgãos internos após a exposição à bactéria. Os animais também foram submetidos à necropsia em diferentes intervalos após a administração, com a retirada de vários órgãos para verificar a presença da bactéria nesses tecidos. A bactéria não cresceu nas amostras biológicas após 3 e 24 h da exposição, mas sim após 16 h, no pulmão no grupo tratado com a bactéria ativa. A confirmação em nível de espécie das colônias isoladas nos órgãos foi realizada pela análise do perfil dos ácidos graxos de membrana. O protocolo utilizado mostrou-se adequado para analisar a segurança de uso dessa bactéria em mamíferos

    Topological insulator particles as optically induced oscillators: towards dynamical force measurements and optical rheology

    We report the first experimental study upon the optical trapping and manipulation of topological insulator (TI) particles. By virtue of the unique TI properties, which have a conducting surface and an insulating bulk, the particles present a peculiar behaviour in the presence of a single laser beam optical tweezers: they oscillate in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the laser propagation, as a result of the competition between radiation pressure and gradient forces. In other words, TI particles behave as optically induced oscillators, allowing dynamical measurements with unprecedented simplicity and purely optical control. Actually, optical rheology of soft matter interfaces and biological membranes, as well as dynamical force measurements in macromolecules and biopolymers, may be quoted as feasible possibilities for the near future.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     Ground-state configurations in ferromagnetic nanotori

    Magnetization ground states are studied in toroidal nanomagnets. The energetics associated to the ferromagnetic, vortex and onion-like configurations are explicitly computed. The analysis reveals that the vortex appears to be the most prominent of such states, minimizing total energy in every torus with internal radius r10nmr\gtrsim10\,{\rm nm} (for Permalloy). For r10nmr\lesssim10\,{\rm nm} the vortex remains the most favorable pattern whenever R/ex1.5R/\ell_{ex}\gtrsim1.5 (RR is the torus external radius and ex\ell_{ex} is the exchange length), being substituted by the ferromagnetic state whenever R/ex1.5R/\ell_{ex}\lesssim1.5.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 apendices, Revtex forma
