    I stopped shaving my legs in May. The decision to quit shaving was part social experiment, but a lot of it had to do with NOT HAVING TO SHAVE MY LEGS ANYMORE. Honestly I didn’t make the decision to stop shaving my leg hair as some sort of feminist statement. I really just found it stupid how society pressures women to have smooth “sexy” legs. How did this pressure begin? Historically women didn’t shave their legs or underarms in the United States; however, hair removal was a common cultural practice in many other parts of the world such as in Ancient Egypt, Greece, and some Native American tribes for centuries. In some societies, the practice was purely religious. In ancient Greece and Rome, the presence of hair on the body indicated poverty and filth. [excerpt

    This creative project takes a look at a new method of approaching the study of animation through use of a new type of 3-dimensional zoetrope called the ellistrope. The ellistrope helps answer "the whys" that linger in the heads of new animators. As they look at the figures dance and come to life all at once while the ellistrope is spinning, they can study the figure from a variety of views all at once. They can concentrate on one angle, and then compare it to any other in an instant. The student now has the opportunity to hold a frame in their hands. This will help them grasp the concepts of 3-dimensionality, thinking in the round, and foreshortening, and not just seeing an image on the screen. By doing this they can further study and grasp the concepts of key poses and dynamic drawings.     Packet loss is one of the principal threats to quality of experience for IPTV systems. However, the packet loss characteristics of the residential access networks which carry IPTV are not widely understood. We present packet level measurements of streaming IPTV-like traffic over four residential access links, and describe the extent and nature of packet loss we encountered. We discuss the likely impact of these losses for IPTV traffic, and outline steps which can ameliorate this

    Abstract Education is changing. Virtual learning is now a common occurrence. Along with this change, more and more virtual learning tools are being used in the educational setting. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has recognized this change and has modified certification standards to include clinical simulation experiences in graduate speech-language training programs. Along with this modification, critical thinking skills are an expected goal, not only in face-to-face experiences, but also in simulation experiences. Educators need to meet this expectation to ensure that future speech-language pathologists are fully prepared to make sound decisions within the clinical setting. Educators may benefit from the following suggestions in regards to the use of critical thinking skills within a clinical simulation experience

    Prospects for Discovering Supersymmetry at the LHC

    Supersymmetry is one of the best-motivated candidates for physics beyond the Standard Model that might be discovered at the LHC. There are many reasons to expect that it may appear at the TeV scale, in particular because it provides a natural cold dark matter candidate. The apparent discrepancy between the experimental measurement of g_mu - 2 and the Standard model value calculated using low-energy e+ e- data favours relatively light sparticles accessible to the LHC. A global likelihood analysis including this, other electroweak precision observables and B-decay observables suggests that the LHC might be able to discover supersymmetry with 1/fb or less of integrated luminosity. The LHC should be able to discover supersymmetry via the classic missing-energy signature, or in alternative phenomenological scenarios. The prospects for discovering supersymmetry at the LHC look very good.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure

    Exotic Baryons in Two-Dimensional QCD

    Two-dimensional QCD has often been used as a laboratory for studying the full four-dimensional theory, providing, for example, an explicit realization of baryons as solitons. We review aspects of conventional baryons in two-dimensional QCD, including the classical and quantum contributions to their masses. We then discuss the spectrum of exotic baryons in two-dimensional QCD, commenting on the solitonic radius inferred from the excitation spectrum as well as the two-dimensional version of the Goldberger-Treiman relation relating meson couplings to current matrix elements. Two-dimensional QCD provides strong overall support to the chiral-soliton picture for the structure of normal and exotic baryons in four dimensions.Comment: 15 pages latex, no figure

    On the Solution to the Polonyi Problem with OO(10~TeV) Gravitino Mass in Supergravity

    We study the solution to the Polonyi problem where the Polonyi field weighs as O(10TeV)O(10{\rm TeV}) and decays just before the primordial nucleosynthesis. It is shown that in spite of a large entropy production by the Polonyi field decay, one can naturally explain the present value of the baryon-to-entropy ratio, nB/s∌(10−10−10−11)n_B/s \sim (10^{-10}-10^{-11}) if the Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis works. It is pointed out, however, that there is another cosmological problem related to the abundance of the lightest superparticles produced by the Polonyi decay
