Automated Meter Reading and SCADA Application for Wireless Sensor Network
Currently, there are many technologies available to automate
public utilities services (water, gas and electricity). AMR, Automated
Meter Reading, and SCADA, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition,
are the main functions that these technologies must support. In
this paper, we propose a low cost network with a similar architecture to
a static ad-hoc sensor network based on low power and unlicensed radio.
Topological parameters for this network are analyzed to obtain optimal
performances and to derive a pseudo-range criterion to create an
application-specific spanning tree for polling optimization purposes. In
application layer services, we analytically study different polling schemes
Datacab: a geographical‐information‐system‐based expert system for the design of cable networks
Telecommunication networks have evolved over time as a result of technological advances, and network topologies and equipment have become increasingly complex. Expert systems are being successfully applied to the management of telecommunication networks. However, applying expert systems to network design is another especially beneficial yet still not very common approach. In this paper we propose a rule‐based expert system called Datacab. Datacab was developed at Enditel Endesa in collaboration with the Electronic Technology Department of the University of Seville, for the automatic design of hybrid fibre coax (HFC) cable networks. Using data from a geographical information system as input, it automatically generates viable HFC network designs
Power Systems Monitoring and Control using Telecom Network Management Standards
Historically, different solutions have been developed for power systems control and telecommunications network management environments. The former was characterized by proprietary solutions, while the latter has been involved for years in a strong standardization process guided by criteria of openness. Today, power systems control standardization is in progress, but it is at an early stage compared to the telecommunications management area, especially in terms of information modeling. Today, control equipment tends to exhibit more computational power, and communication lines have increased their performance. These trends hint at some conceptual convergence between power systems and telecommunications networks from a management perspective. This convergence leads us to suggest the application of well-established telecommunications management standards for power systems control. This paper shows that this is a real medium-to-long term possibility
Spectral Analysis of Electricity Demand Using Hilbert–Huang Transform
The large amount of sensors in modern electrical networks poses a serious challenge in the data processing side. For many years, spectral analysis has been one of the most used approaches to extract physically meaningful information from a sea of data. Fourier Transform (FT) and Wavelet Transform (WT) are by far the most employed tools in this analysis. In this paper we explore the alternative use of Hilbert–Huang Transform (HHT) for electricity demand spectral representation. A sequence of hourly consumptions, spanning 40 months of electrical demand in Spain, has been used as dataset. First, by Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), the sequence has been time-represented as an ensemble of 13 Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). Later on, by applying Hilbert Transform (HT) to every IMF, an HHT spectrum has been obtained. Results show smoother spectra with more defined shapes and an excellent frequency resolution. EMD also fosters a deeper analysis of abnormal electricity demand at different timescales. Additionally, EMD permits information compression, which becomes very significant for lossless sequence representation. A 35% reduction has been obtained for the electricity demand sequence. On the negative side, HHT demands more computer resources than conventional spectral analysis techniques
Heterogeneous data source integration for smart grid ecosystems based on metadata mining
The arrival of new technologies related to smart grids and the resulting ecosystem of applications andmanagement systems pose many new problems. The databases of the traditional grid and the variousinitiatives related to new technologies have given rise to many different management systems with several formats and different architectures. A heterogeneous data source integration system is necessary toupdate these systems for the new smart grid reality. Additionally, it is necessary to take advantage of theinformation smart grids provide. In this paper, the authors propose a heterogeneous data source integration based on IEC standards and metadata mining. Additionally, an automatic data mining framework isapplied to model the integrated information.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2013-40767-
ESTELLE: A Method to Analyze Automatically the Performance of Telecontrol Protocols in SCADA Systems
This paper presents the use of ESTELLE, a formal
description technique, as a method to calculate automatically the
performance of telecontrol protocols in SCADAsystems. Some specific
primitives are added to the ESTELLE description language in
order to achieve that goal. As an example, we analyze the performance
of a telecontrol protocol. The results from this method are
compared to performance measurements obtained from analytical
and simulated solutionsMinisterio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC 2000-111
IDOLO: Multimedia Data Deployment on SCADA Systems
IDOLO project was born with the objective of
adding audiovisual information to the usually text-based
Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) used on Supervisory Control
And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. This is not a simple
task, as SCADA systems have traditionally been based on
proprietary, low transmission speed networks, due to the special
requirements that such systems impose in terms of network
reliability and timing requirements.
Within this paper we describe our efforts on the design,
implementation and deployment of a networked computer
system that adds multimedia information to the usually textbased
SCADA/HMI systems. IDOLO system is based on wellknown
hardware and software solutions, such as Ethernet
networks or MPEG codecs, resulting in a flexible and
expandable system that has succesfully been deployed on a real
electrical facility
Object-Oriented Modeling and Simulation of the Arterial Pressure Control System by Using MODELICA
The modeling of physiological control systems
via mathematical equations reflects the calculation procedure
more than the structure of the real system modeled, and several
simulation environment have been used so far for this
task. Nevertheless, object-oriented modeling is spreading in
current simulation environments through the use of the individual
components of the model and its interconnections to
define the underlying dynamic equations. In this paper we
describe the use of the MODELICATM simulation environment
in the object-oriented modeling of the cardiovascular control
system. The performance of the controlled system has been
analyzed by object-oriented simulation in the light of existing
hypothesis and physiological data used here for validation
purposes
