At present, there are two main mobile platforms in the world, iOS and Android. These platforms have multitudinous resistances, so that no code can compile data from the two platforms simultaneously. Therefore, to satisfy their various clients, programmers have to set codes twice for the two distinct platforms... Distribution of Radiation-Induced Defects in Quartz at the ACKIO Uranium Prospect, Athabasca Basin, Saskatchewan: Tracing Uranium-Bearing Fluids

This thesis presents the results of an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic study of quartz from the Baselode Energy Corp.’s ACKIO uranium prospect in the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan. The study included samples taken from both the Athabasca Supergroup sandstones and basement rocks from 16 diamond drillholes. Detailed EPR analyses revealed that quartz from both sandstones and basement rocks host a suite of silicon-vacancy hole centers, formed by the bombardment of alpha particles emitted from the radioactive decay of uranium, thorium, and their unstable daughter isotopes. The differences in EPR signal intensities of these hole centers indicate that quartz grains received different accumulative doses of alpha-particle irradiation in different locations within the ACKIO prospect. A three-dimensional distribution model of the EPR signal intensities of these radiation-induced defects in quartz has been constructed. This model shows that quartz in a mineralized sample has the highest EPR signal intensity due to the presence of disseminated uraninite. For quartz sampled away from uranium mineralization, the elevated EPR intensities of the silicon-vacancy hole centers most likely indicate a temporary source of radiation, such as ancient uranium-bearing fluids. Along the sandstone-basement contact at the ACKIO project, the EPR signal intensities vary greatly and differ by approximately two orders of magnitude. Anomalously high EPR intensities recorded in fault gouges and brecciated areas suggest that these fractures served as the conduits for the migration of ancient uranium-bearing fluids and that there was limited migration of uranium-bearing fluids along the sandstone-basement contact at the ACKIO prospect. Moreover, the defined conduits for the migration of uranium-bearing fluids potentially point to new targets toward the south of the ACKIO area for further exploration. This thesis demonstrates the power of the systematic study of radiation-induced defects in quartz to reveal ancient pathways of uranium-bearing fluid vectors to explore potential mineralization targets

The Effect of Scalp Acupuncture on Autism: Could This Be a Possible Treatment of Autism?

    Get PDF
No current conventional treatment methods have been proven effective in improving core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In pursuit of a potent remedy for ASD, scalp acupuncture, one of the complementary and alternative medicines (CAM), may have potential in treating children with ASD according to recent clinical studies. In our first study, the effect of scalp acupuncture on prominent symptoms of ASD was investigated. Factors contributing to the effectiveness of ASD such as age and onset pattern had also been evaluated. Results showed that verbal communication and social and behavioral aspects of the patient could benefit from scalp acupuncture. Moreover, early intervention before 3 years old will bring about better therapeutic outcomes. The effect of scalp acupuncture on emotional and behavioral problems in children with ASD was further elaborated in the second study. Our observation on patients noted drastic improvements in emotional and emotion-related behavioral problems after the introduction of scalp acupuncture. Feedbacks from parents also reflected a positive progress in performance on cognitive, social, and behavioral aspects after treatment. The influence of scalp acupuncture on the sleeping quality and habit in children with ASD was investigated in the third study. Children had shown less resistance and anxiety toward sleep after scalp acupuncture

A web services choreography scenario for interoperating bioinformatics applications

BACKGROUND: Very often genome-wide data analysis requires the interoperation of multiple databases and analytic tools. A large number of genome databases and bioinformatics applications are available through the web, but it is difficult to automate interoperation because: 1) the platforms on which the applications run are heterogeneous, 2) their web interface is not machine-friendly, 3) they use a non-standard format for data input and output, 4) they do not exploit standards to define application interface and message exchange, and 5) existing protocols for remote messaging are often not firewall-friendly. To overcome these issues, web services have emerged as a standard XML-based model for message exchange between heterogeneous applications. Web services engines have been developed to manage the configuration and execution of a web services workflow. RESULTS: To demonstrate the benefit of using web services over traditional web interfaces, we compare the two implementations of HAPI, a gene expression analysis utility developed by the University of California San Diego (UCSD) that allows visual characterization of groups or clusters of genes based on the biomedical literature. This utility takes a set of microarray spot IDs as input and outputs a hierarchy of MeSH Keywords that correlates to the input and is grouped by Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) category. While the HTML output is easy for humans to visualize, it is difficult for computer applications to interpret semantically. To facilitate the capability of machine processing, we have created a workflow of three web services that replicates the HAPI functionality. These web services use document-style messages, which means that messages are encoded in an XML-based format. We compared three approaches to the implementation of an XML-based workflow: a hard coded Java application, Collaxa BPEL Server and Taverna Workbench. The Java program functions as a web services engine and interoperates with these web services using a web services choreography language (BPEL4WS). CONCLUSION: While it is relatively straightforward to implement and publish web services, the use of web services choreography engines is still in its infancy. However, industry-wide support and push for web services standards is quickly increasing the chance of success in using web services to unify heterogeneous bioinformatics applications. Due to the immaturity of currently available web services engines, it is still most practical to implement a simple, ad-hoc XML-based workflow by hard coding the workflow as a Java application. For advanced web service users the Collaxa BPEL engine facilitates a configuration and management environment that can fully handle XML-based workflow

Changing Shapes of Care:Expressions of Filial Piety among Second-generation Chinese in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
This study explored perceptions of filial care among second-generation Chinese immigrants in the Netherlands. The provision of filial help or care can be regarded as a cultural phenomenon known as filial piety and it can be considered within the broad scope of caregiving as "family care". Fifteen interviews were conducted, and a thematic analysis was applied. The findings showed that care was given in the form of language brokering, information inquiry, home visits, and facilitative and social support. Care was perceived as a moral duty among the participants and was grounded in their perceived sense of responsibility. The participants' perspectives on current and future care included practical and normative considerations for meeting parental needs, and included opinions based on filial piety norms. In conclusion, this study showed that filial piety, specifically filial care, is still relevant to the younger immigrant Chinese community in the Netherlands

Coupling of small leucine-rich proteoglycans to hypoxic survival of a progenitor cell-like subpopulation in Rhesus Macaque intervertebral disc

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) is a major spinal disorder that associates with neck and back pain. Recent studies of clinical samples and animal models for IVD degeneration have identified cells with multi-potency in the IVD. However, IVD tissue-specific progenitor cells and their niche components are not clear, although degenerated IVD-derived cells possess invitro characteristics of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs). Here, we firstly identified the tissue-specific intervertebral disc progenitor cells (DPCs) from healthy Rhesus monkey and report the niche components modulated the survival of DPCs under hypoxia. DPCs possess clonogenicity, multipotency and retain differentiation potential after extended expansion invitro and invivo. In particular, the nucleus pulposus-derived DPCs are sensitive to low oxygen tension and undergo apoptosis under hypoxic conditions due to their inability to induce/stabilize hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF). The presence of small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP), biglycan or decorin, can reduce the susceptibility of DPCs to hypoxia-induced apoptosis via promoting the activation/stabilization of HIF-1α and HIF-2α. As IVD is avascular, we propose SLRPs are niche components of DPCs in IVD homeostasis, providing new insights in progenitor cell biology and niche factors under a hypoxic microenvironment. © 2013 .postprin

    Get PDF
Objectives: This study conducted a linguistic and psychometric evaluation of the Chinese Counseling Competencies Scale-Revised (CCS-R).Methods: The Chinese CCS-R was created from the original English version using a standard forward-backward translation process. The psychometric properties of the Chinese CCS-R were examined in a cohort of 208 counselors-in-training by two independent raters. Fifty-three counselors-in-training were asked to undergo another counseling performance evaluation for the test-retest. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted for the Chinese CCS-R, followed by internal consistency, test-retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, convergent validity, and concurrent validity. Results: The results of the CFA supported the factorial validity of the Chinese CCS-R, with adequate construct replicability. The scale had a McDonald's omega of 0.876, and intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.63 and 0.90 for test-retest reliability and inter-rater reliability, respectively. Significantly positive correlations were observed between the Chinese CCS-R score and scores of performance checklist (Pearson's γ = 0.781), indicating a large convergent validity, and knowledge on drug abuse (Pearson's γ = 0.833), indicating a moderate concurrent validity. Conclusion: The results support that the Chinese CCS-R is a valid and reliable measure of the counseling competencies.Practice implication: The CCS-R provides trainers with a reliable tool to evaluate counseling students' competencies and to facilitate discussions with trainees about their areas for growth
