    A Social Cognitive Approach Towards Understanding The Effects Of Popular Poker Television Shows On College Students

    Tournament poker shows have become a leading ratings draw on American television. Since ESPN and the Travel Channel began airing their innovative poker shows in 2003, the game has reached a new following, particularly among college students. There are unique and psychologically significant factors that characterize the college population that make students particularly receptive to popular characterizations in media. This study investigates the potential exacerbating effect that these widely popular poker television shows have on the gambling behavior of college students. 444 college students completed a survey designed to assess gratifications sought through media along with measures of attitudes, gambling behavior, and social systems. Using Social Cognitive Theory as a framework of influence, exposure to these shows ranging from the individual student to the overall college environment was assessed and evaluated. Results indicated that student gambling is strongly correlated to viewership of poker shows, particularly among younger students. This was especially seen among students who utilized the online gambling option. Gambling behavior of peers wasn\u27t shown to be a strong influence for student gambling.     The global warming potential and the material utility of PET and bio-based PEF bottles over multiple recycling trips

    Biomass use and recycling are among the few options to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the growing plastics sector. The bio-based plastic polyethylene furanoate (PEF) is a promising alternative to polyethylene terephthalate (PET), in particular for small bottle applications. For the first time, we assessed the life cycle global warming potential (GWP) for 250 mL PET and PEF bottles over multiple mechanical (MR) and chemical (CR) recycling trips in the Netherlands. We found that bio-based PEF would offer 50–74% lower life cycle GHG emission after one recycling trip compared to PET, depending on the waste management case. Our results also show that deposit-based recycling systems significantly reduce the cumulative cradle-to-grave net GHG emissions for both bottle types, especially when multiple recycling trips are applied. We propose complementary material utility (MU) indicators to reveal synergies and trade-offs between circularity and GWP: While deposit-based CR shows the best performance in terms of MU, it falls behind deposit-based MR when it comes to net GHG emissions due to the energy intensity of CR. Hence, combining mechanical and chemical recycling could contribute to achieving the goals of the circular economy and climate change mitigation alike

    The European Commission's Joint Research Centre and the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) organised an expert workshop on 'Learning Curves for Policy Support' in Amsterdam on 8 March 2012. It aimed to assess the challenges in the application of the two-factor learning curve, or alternative solutions in supporting policy decision making in the framework of the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan, and explored options for improvement. The workshop gathered distinguished experts in the field of scientific research on learning curves and policy researchers from the European Commission and ECN to assess the challenges in the application of the two-factor-learning curve, or alternative solutions in supporting policy decision making, and to provide options for improvement. This paper forms the summary of outcomes from the workshop. Due to the very different nature of the One-Factor-Learning concept and the Two-Factor-Learning concept, these are discussed in separate parts. In each of these parts the context and the methodology are introduced, methodological and data challenges are described and the problems associated with the application of the concept in models is discussed.JRC.F.6-Energy systems evaluatio

    Assessment of spatial implications of photovoltaics deployment policies in the Netherlands

    Electricity generation with photovoltaic (PV) solar energy technology requires significant amounts of space; a particular point of discussion in a densely populated country like the Netherlands. Therefore, we developed a new analytical framework to analyse potential electricity generation for specific PV typologies on 43 different land utilisation and water types. Our results indicate that spatial potentials for PV are substantial compared to current Dutch scenarios and ambitions for its role in a long-term decarbonised energy economy. The spatial potential of PV on rooftop areas is sufficient to largely meet these ambitions; however spatial allocation depends on more factors than the potential alone, e.g. desired implementation speed. Therefore, we have sketched some variants with a more balanced allocation over the various land use types. Innovative options, such as PV within offshore wind parks and on infrastructure, parking spaces and façades offer considerable opportunities for additional generation. Furthermore, we illustrate the considerable impacts on PV potential of (i) current net metering policy, (ii) the upcoming societal preference for lower panel densities in land-based PV parks, and (iii) a focus on cost efficiency instead of spatial efficiency. Policy makers should bear these outcomes in mind when designing support schemes for PV

    De energietransitie: een nieuwe dimensie in ons landschap

    De transitie naar een duurzame energievoorziening heeft op veel terreinen ingrijpende gevolgen voor onze samenleving. Het gaat onder meer om een verandering van leefomgeving en landschap. Voor een succesvolle energietransitie is het nodig om nu al rekening te houden met de ruimtelijke vormgeving van nieuwe energielandschappen en de manier waarop die tot stand komen. Dit betekent dat alle betrokkenen samen energielandschappen ontwerpen waarin mens en technologie elkaar op een nieuwe manier ontmoeten. Een andere manier van denken: niet het ruimtelijk inpassen, maar het creëren van landschappen die door mensen worden gewaardeerd en economisch haalbaar zijn. Landschappen die zorgen dat de overgang naar een duurzame, koolstofarme toekomst breed gedragen wordt en snel kan plaatsvinden. ECN en WUR hebben hun kennis over energietechnologie en landschapsarchitectuur gebundeld in dit paper. Zo willen ze een bijdrage leveren aan de discussie over wat wenselijk en noodzakelijk is om de energietransitie ruimtelijk in goede banen te leiden

    Dit rapport schetst hoe de Nederlandse basisindustrie in 2050 klimaatneutraal en circulair kan produceren. Het is gebaseerd op discussies binnen het Sustainable Industry Lab vanaf medio 2021. De transitie van de basisindustrie is uitdagend, maar de ligging aan de Noordzee en het netwerk van industriële bedrijven, toeleveranciers en kennisinstellingen, maken het plausibel en wenselijk dat Nederland een flinke basisindustrie behoudt. Dat vraagt echter om keuzes, waarover de meningen uiteen lopen. We schetsen daarom ook hoe verschillende sociaal-maatschappelijke toekomstbeelden deze keuzes beïnvloeden
