Polaronic effect in the x-ray absorption spectra of La1-x Ca x MnO3 manganites.
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is performed to study changes in the electronic structures of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and charged ordered (CO) La1-x Ca x MnO3 manganites with respect to temperature. The pre-edge features in O and Mn K-edge XAS spectra, which are highly sensitive to the local distortion of MnO6 octahedral, exhibit contrasting temperature dependence between CMR and CO samples. The seemingly counter-intuitive XAS temperature dependence can be reconciled in the context of polarons. These results help identify the most relevant orbital states associated with polarons and highlight the crucial role played by polarons in understanding the electronic structures of manganites
Adaptive Douglas-Peucker Algorithm With Automatic Thresholding for AIS-Based Vessel Trajectory Compression
Automatic identification system (AIS) is an important part of perfecting terrestrial networks, radar systems and satellite constellations. It has been widely used in vessel traffic service system to improve navigational safety. Following the explosion in vessel AIS data, the issues of data storing, processing, and analysis arise as emerging research topics in recent years. Vessel trajectory compression is used to eliminate the redundant information, preserve the key features, and simplify information for further data mining, thus correspondingly improving data quality and guaranteeing accurate measurement for ensuring navigational safety. It is well known that trajectory compression quality significantly depends on the threshold selection. We propose an Adaptive Douglas-Peucker (ADP) algorithm with automatic thresholding for AIS-based vessel trajectory compression. In particular, the optimal threshold is adaptively calculated using a novel automatic threshold selection method for each trajectory, as an improvement and complement of original Douglas-Peucker (DP) algorithm. It is developed based on the channel and trajectory characteristics, segmentation framework, and mean distance. The proposed method is able to simplify vessel trajectory data and extract useful information effectively. The time series trajectory classification and clustering are discussed and analysed based on ADP algorithm in this paper. To verify the reasonability and effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments are conducted on two different trajectory data sets in inland waterway of Yangtze River for trajectory classification based on the nearest neighbor classifier, and for trajectory clustering based on the spectral clustering. Comprehensive results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computational cost while ensuring the clustering and classification accuracy
Cylindrical active coated nano-particles excited by electric and magnetic line sources
Cylindrical active coated nano-particles comprised of a silica nano-cylinder core covered with a plasmonic nano-shell are investigated with regard to their near- and far-field properties. The source of excitation is taken to be an electric or a magnetic line current, while three different plasmonic materials are employed for the nano-shells, namely silver, gold and copper. © 2011 EurAAP
Factors controlling tropospheric O3, OH, NOx, and SO2 over the tropical Pacific during PEM-Tropics B
Observations over the tropical Pacific during the Pacific Exploratory Mission (PEM)-Tropics B experiment (March-April 1999) are analyzed. Concentrations of CO and long-lived nonmethane hydrocarbons in the region are significantly enhanced due to transport of pollutants from northern industrial continents. This pollutant import also enhances moderately O3 concentrations but not NOx concentrations. It therefore tends to depress OH concentrations over the tropical Pacific. These effects contrast to the large enhancements of O3 and NOx concentrations and the moderate increase of OH concentrations due to biomass burning outflow during the PEM-Tropics A experiment (September-October 1996). Observed CH3I concentrations, as in PEM-Tropics A, indicate that convective mass outflux in the middle and upper troposphere is largely independent of altitude over the tropical Pacific. Constraining a one-dimensiohal model with CH3I observations yields a 10-day timescale for convective turnover of the free troposphere, a factor of 2 faster than during PEM-Tropics A. Model simulated HO2, CH2O, H2O2, and CH3OOH concentrations are generally in agreement with observations. However, simulated OH concentrations are lower (∼25%) than observations above 6 km. Whereas models tend to overestimate previous field measurements, simulated HNO3 concentrations during PEM-Tropics B are too low (a factor of 2-4 below 6 km) compared to observations. Budget analyses indicate that chemical production of O3 accounts for only 50% of chemical loss; significant transport of O3 into the region appears to take place within the tropics. Convective transport of CH3OOH enhances the production of HOx and O3 in the upper troposphere, but this effect is offset by HOx loss due to the scavenging of H2O2. Convective transport and scavenging of reactive nitrogen species imply a necessary source of 0.4-1 Tg yr-1 of NOx in the free troposphere (above 4 km) over the tropics. A large fraction of the source could be from marine lightning. Oxidation of DMS transported by convection from the boundary layer could explain the observed free tropospheric SO2 concentrations over the tropical Pacific. This source of DMS due to convection, however, would imply in the model free tropospheric concentrations much higher than observed. The model overestimate cannot be reconciled using recent kinetics measurements of the DMS-OH adduct reaction at low pressures and temperatures and may reflect enhanced OH oxidation of DMS during convection. The hyperfine structure of the 13Δg state of Na 2
The hyperfine Hamiltonian for a homonuclear diatomic molecule was expressed in the Hund's case b βS basis. With this matrix, the hyperfine splittings for the Na 2 1 3Δ g state were theoretically calculated. The hyperfine spectra of Na 2 1 3Δ g ← b 3π 1u transitions for both high- and low-rotational quantum numbers were reanalyzed. Overall, significant results were obtained.published_or_final_versio

Model study of tropospheric trace species distributions during PEM-West A
A three-dimensional mesoscale transport/photochemical model is used to study the transport and photochemical transformation of trace species over eastern Asia and western Pacific for the period from September 20 to October 6, 1991, of the Pacific Exploratory Mission-West A experiment. The influence of emissions from the continental boundary layer that was evident in the observed trace species distributions in the lower troposphere over the ocean is well simulated by the model. In the upper troposphere, species such as O3, NOy (total reactive nitrogen species), and SO2 which have a significant source in the stratosphere are also simulated well in the model, suggesting that the upper tropospheric abundances of these species are strongly influenced by stratospheric fluxes and upper tropospheric sources. In the case of SO2 the stratospheric flux is identified to be mostly from the Mount Pinatubo eruption. Concentrations in the upper troposphere for species such as CO and hydrocarbons, which are emitted in the continental boundary layer and have a sink in the troposphere, are significantly underestimated by the model. Two factors have been identified to contribute significantly to the underestimate: one is emissions upwind of the model domain (eastern Asia and western Pacific); the other is that vertical transport is underestimated in the model. Model results are also grouped by back trajectories to study the contrast between compositions of marine and continental air masses. The model-calculated altitude profiles of trace species in continental and marine air masses are found to be qualitatively consistent with observations. However, the difference in the median values of trace species between continental air and marine air is about twice as large for the observed values as for model results. This suggests that the model underestimates the outflow fluxes of trace species from the Asian continent and the Pacific rim countries to the ocean. Observed altitude profiles for species like CO and hydrocarbons show a negative gradient in continental air and a positive gradient in marine air. A mechanism which may be responsible for the altitude gradients is proposed
An Overview of Signal Processing Techniques for Joint Communication and Radar Sensing
Joint communication and radar sensing (JCR) represents an emerging research field aiming to integrate the above two functionalities into a single system, by sharing the majority of hardware, signal processing modules and, in a typical case, the transmitted signal. The close cooperation of the communication and sensing functions can enable significant improvement of spectrum efficiency, reduction of device size, cost and power consumption, and improvement of performance of both functions. Advanced signal processing techniques are critical for making the integration efficient, from transmission signal design to receiver processing. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art on JCR systems from the signal processing perspective. A balanced coverage on both transmitter and receiver is provided for three types of JCR systems, namely, communication-centric, radar-centric, and joint design and optimization
An Algorithm for Strong Stability in the Student-Project Allocation Problem With Ties
We study a variant of the Student-Project Allocation problem with lecturer preferences over Students where ties are allowed in the preference lists of students and lecturers (spa-st). We investigate the concept of strong stability in this context. Informally, a matching is strongly stable if there is no student and lecturer l such that if they decide to form a private arrangement outside of the matching via one of l’s proposed projects, then neither party would be worse off and at least one of them would strictly improve. We describe the first polynomial-time algorithm to find a strongly stable matching or report that no such matching exists, given an instance of spa-st. Our algorithm runs in O(m2) time, where m is the total length of the students’ preference lists
InGaN nano-ring structures for high-efficiency light emitting diodes
A technique based on the Fresnel diffraction effect for the fabrication of nano-scale site-controlled ring structures in InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well structures has been demonstrated. The ring structures have an internal diameter of 500 nm and a wall width of 300 nm. A 1 cm-1 Raman shift has been measured, signifying substantial strain relaxation from the fabricated structure. The 9 nm blueshift observed in the cathodoluminescence spectra can be attributed to band filling and/or screening of the piezoelectric field. A light emitting diode based on this geometry has been demonstrated. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
