Mariner 6 and 7 picture analysis
Analysis of Mariner 6 and 7 far-encounter (FE) pictures is discussed. The purpose of the studies was to devise ways to combine digital data from the full set of FE pictures so as to improve surface resolution, distinguish clouds and haze patches from permanent surface topographic markings, deduce improved values for radius, oblateness, and spin-axis orientation, and produce a composite photographic map of Mars. Attempts to measure and correct camera distortions, locate each image in the frame, and convert image coordinates to martian surface coordinates were highly successful; residual uncertainties in location were considerably less than one pixel. However, analysis of the data to improve the radius, figure, and axial tilt and to produce a composite map was curtailed because of the superior data provided by Mariner 9. The data, programs, and intermediate results are still available (1976), and the project could be resumed with little difficulty
Design and construction of prototype radio antenna for shortest radio wavelengths
A paraboloid radio antenna of 10.4 meters diameter, 0.41 meter focal length was constructed and its successful completion is described. The surface accuracy of the antenna is at least four times better than any existing antenna in its class size (50 micrometers rms). Antenna design specifications (i.e., for mounting, drive motors, honeycomb structures) are discussed and engineering drawings and photographs of antenna components are shown. The antenna will be used for millimeter-wave interferometry and sub-millimeter wave radiometry over a full frequency range (up to approximately 860 GHz). The antenna will also be moveable (for interferometric use) between reinforced concrete pads by rail. The effects of the weather and gravity on antenna performance are briefly discussed
Cloud-Chamber Study of the Production and Decay of Strange Particles
Out of 1242 decay events observed in a magnetic cloud chamber array triggered on penetrating showers, a total of 54 associated V-particle pairs has been obtained. All the associations observed are consistent with the "strangeness" selection rules. A statistical analysis of the numbers of double and single events has been used to obtain rough estimates of the fractions of neutral K particles and neutral hyperons which decay by "invisible" modes, and of the relative frequencies of occurrence of various production processes. The main uncertainties in the resulting values are discussed in detail
Cloud-Chamber Investigation of Charged V Particles
An analysis of 84 charged V events obtained during two years of operation of a vertical magnetic cloud-chamber array is presented. The particular features of interest which are studied in detail are the distribution of P*, the momentum of the charged secondary in the rest system of the primary, and the possible existence of a component of short lifetime (i.e., τ<5×10^-10 sec). The P* distribution from 19 slow, accurately measurable positive events is shown to imply that the large majority of these events arise from one or more two-body decays from primaries of mass approximately equal to that of the τ meson. One case turns out to be inconsistent with this interpretation, and is presumed to represent a three-body decay. The P* distribution from 6 slow, accurately measurable negative events is consistent with a single two-body decay having a P* value of about 200 Mev/c. This suggests the existence of a negative counterpart to the well-known θ0 particle, though the statistics are much too poor to permit any strong conclusion. The lifetime analysis provides strong evidence for the existence of a negative component of lifetime equal to or less than (1.3±0.6)×10^-10 sec. The transverse momentum distribution for these short-lived events is shown to suggest a two-body decay with a P* value of 201±12 Mev/c
Linear Air Trough
The construction and operation of a linear air trough, a device for floating small rectangular blocks (called gliders) on an air film, is described. The apparatus is useful for demonstrations and laboratory study of one-dimensional particle mechanics. The very small friction that is present is due to the viscosity of the air film, and causes the speed of a glider to decay with a time constant of the order of a few hundred seconds. A type of bumper has been designed which yields a coefficient of restitution greater than 0.99. Ten of these air troughs have been used in a student laboratory for a year, and have proved quite successful in experiments involving Newton's laws, collisions, damped harmonic motion, and motion on an incline
Mean lifetimes of V-particles and heavy mesons
A maximum-likelihood procedure for determining mean lifetimes of V-particles from cloud-chamber data is applied to samples taken from a group of 134 neutral V-particle decays. For 74 events which were consistent with a decay into a proton and a negative π-meson, a lifetime of (2.5±0.7)×10-10 sec is obtained. Dividing the data into "low Q" and "high Q" groups on the basis of the calculated energy release in the decay, a value of τL=(2.9±0.8)×10-10 sec is found for those cases with 0<~Q<~50 Mev and a value of τH=(1.6±0.5)×10-10 sec is found for those cases with 50<Q<~150 Mev. While no significant difference exists between these two values, the difference is greater than for other plausible division schemes which are considered.
A qualitative discussion of lifetimes is given for the case of 23 charged V-particle decays. For the charged V-particles these data suggest either a lifetime less than that of the neutral V-particles, provided the sample is homogeneous, or, more likely, an apparent average lifetime less than that of the neutral V-particles, if the sample is a mixture of two or more types of particles. The possibility that κ- and/or χ-mesons make up a part of these decays is considered
Observations of Extremely Cool Stars
As one part of a program of infrared astronomy carried on at the California Institute of Technology, a survey of the sky in two infrared spectral ranges, 0.68-0.92 μand 2.01-
2.41 μ, is being carried out. The motivation for such a survey is to obtain an unbiased census of objects that emit in the 2.0-2.5-μ atmospheric window; this will, of course, include many ordinary stars, but it might also reveal many potentially interesting objects that would not be included in an a priori selection of objects to be measured. In fact, a number of strikingly red stars have already been found. Since most of these "superred" stars occur in the Milky Way, interstellar reddening may be of some consequence; but in at least a few cases the stars seem to be intrinsically extremely red. These preliminary results seem of sufficient interest to merit brief description at this time
Cloud Chamber Investigation of Anomalous θ^0 Particles
Eighteen anomalous θ^0, (θ^0_(anom)), decay events observed in the California Institute of Technology magnet cloud chambers have been analyzed. Many of these decays are dynamically inconsistent with the τ^0→π^++π^−+π^0 scheme, but most are consistent with the decay processes: θ^0_(anom)→π^++π^−+γ, π^±+μ^∓+ν, and π^±+e^∓+ν. However, at least one event is inconsistent with each decay scheme. From the locations of the decays in the cloud chamber, the lifetime is found to be significantly longer than that of the normal θ^0 particle, called here the θ^0_(π2) particle. Other differences in the behavior of the θ0anom and θ^0_(π2) particles were also observed in the (a) momentum distributions, (b) origin locations, (c) relative numbers of θ^0_(anom) and θ^0_(π2) particles traveling upward, and (d) the types of V particles produced in association with the θ^0_(anom) and θ^0_(π2). It is concluded that not all the θ^0_(anom) decays can result from alternate decay modes of the θ^0_(π2). Moreover, many decays can be neither τ^0 decays nor alternate decays of the θ^0_(π2).
The characteristics of the θ^0_2 particle proposed by Gell-Mann and Pais are consistent with those of the θ^0_(anom) particle, with the possible exception of the observed types of associations. An estimate was made of the relative number of θ^0_(anom) to θ^0_(π2) particles observed to decay in the cloud chamber. If all θ^0_(anom) decays are assumed to arise from decays of the θ^0_2 particle, then a lower limit for the θ^0_2 lifetime is found to be about 10^(−9) sec

In the course of a cloud chamber study of penetrating showers, two events have been observed which probably represent the decay in flight of Ï„-mesons,(1) and one event which probably represents the decay in flight of a K-meson.(2
