Reciprocity and customization in didactics for continuing education

For the fourth successive year SURF Educatie (SURF Education) organised the EduTrip, in which this year over 100 people from Dutch higher education and education-related businesses took part. The purpose of the Dutch visit to EDUCAUSE was first and foremost to get a shared view of the present state of affairs surrounding ICT in American institutions for higher education by means of the ability to network and establish contacts with our counterparts there. Based on this, one would subsequently be able to formulate a number of recommendations for higher education in the Netherlands

Critically reflective work behavior of health care professionals

\ud Introduction:\ud Better understanding of critically reflective work behavior (CRWB), an approach for work-related informal learning, is important in order to gain more profound insight in the continuing development of health care professionals.\ud \ud \ud Methods:\ud A survey, developed to measure CRWB and its predictors, was distributed to veterinary professionals. The authors specified a model relating CRWB to a Perceived Need for Lifelong Learning, Perceived Workload, and Opportunities for Feedback. Furthermore, research utilization was added to the concept of CRWB. The model was tested against the data, using structural equation modeling (SEM).\ud \ud \ud Results:\ud The model was well represented by the data. Four factors that reflect aspects of CRWB were distinguished: (1) individual CRWB; (2) being critical in interactions with others; (3) cross-checking of information; and (4) openness to new findings. The latter 2 originated from the factor research utilization in CRWB. The Perceived Need for Lifelong Learning predicts CRWB. Neither Perceived Workload nor Opportunities for Feedback of other practitioners was related to CRWB.\ud \ud \ud Discussion:\ud The results suggest that research utilization, such as cross-checking information and openness to new findings, is essential for CRWB. Furthermore, perceptions of the need for lifelong learning are more relevant for CRWB of health care professionals than qualities of the workplace.\u

Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System Activity and Cardiac Function in Children After Coarctation Repair

Background: Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is one of the most common congenital heart defects. Most patients live into adulthood as a result of improved surgical techniques; however, late complications, including hypertension, recoarctation, and arrhythmias, are common. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) might play a role in the pathology. This study evaluated cardiac ANS activity and cardiac function in children after CoA repair and investigated the relationship between the two. Methods: The study participants were 31 children after CoA repair and 62 healthy controls aged between 8 and 18 years. Ambulatory impedance cardiography was used to measure cardiac ANS activity and cardiac output for 24 hours. Transthoracic echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging were used to measure cardiac function. Results: No group differences were found in ambulatory cardiac ANS activity. However, ambulatory cardiac output and left ventricular function were significantly decreased in patients compared with controls. Conclusions: Left ventricular function and ambulatory cardiac output are impaired in patients after CoA repair, despite unchanged cardiac ANS activity in this group. These results underscore the importance of clinical follow-up, even in patients without residual stenosis
