    A Lightweight Distributed Solution to Content Replication in Mobile Networks

    Performance and reliability of content access in mobile networks is conditioned by the number and location of content replicas deployed at the network nodes. Facility location theory has been the traditional, centralized approach to study content replication: computing the number and placement of replicas in a network can be cast as an uncapacitated facility location problem. The endeavour of this work is to design a distributed, lightweight solution to the above joint optimization problem, while taking into account the network dynamics. In particular, we devise a mechanism that lets nodes share the burden of storing and providing content, so as to achieve load balancing, and decide whether to replicate or drop the information so as to adapt to a dynamic content demand and time-varying topology. We evaluate our mechanism through simulation, by exploring a wide range of settings and studying realistic content access mechanisms that go beyond the traditional assumptionmatching demand points to their closest content replica. Results show that our mechanism, which uses local measurements only, is: (i) extremely precise in approximating an optimal solution to content placement and replication; (ii) robust against network mobility; (iii) flexible in accommodating various content access patterns, including variation in time and space of the content demand.Comment: 12 page

    An extension of the identification algorithm for feedback active control of incomplete measured systems

    In a previous paper [1], the identification algorithm is presented for feedback active controlled systems. However, this method can only be applied to complete measured systems. The aim of this paper is to present a combination of the identification algorithm and the modal superposition method to control the incomplete measured systems. The system response is expanded by modal eigenfunction technique. The external excitation acting on some first modes is identified with a time delay and with a small error depending on the sensor locations. Then the control forces will be generated to balance the identified excitations. A numerical simulation is applied to an eight story building subjected to base acceleration

    Motivation in Foreign Language Classrooms at Tertiary Level: A Case Study

    In teaching and learning a foreign language, especially English, motivation plays an extremely integral part in ensuring success. In this study, the researchers attempt to provide an overview of research on motivation and discover how motivation can assist second or foreign language learning in classrooms of English-majored students in the university setting. This study aims to investigate whether English-majored learners are motivated in learning English or not, focusing on extrinsic motivational factors to identify the factors to develop their motivation and maintain their journey of learning English. A questionnaire is devised and administered to 52 senior English-majored students. The data was then analyzed using the SPSS version 20. The results suggest that learners’ motivation is related to learning facilities and teacher’s personality which can encourage learners to think more positively and thus be more motivated in their language learning process. Along with providing specific recommendations for further research on motivation, the paper concludes by calling on for adopting a range of motivational factors that can promote English as a foreign or second language learning
