    Genetic variation and heritability estimation in Jatropha curcas L. progenies for seed yield and vegetative traits

    In this study, experiment was conducted on sandy loam soils poor in organic carbon and water holding capacity in southern Haryana, India to determine the best progenies of Jatropha curcas for bio-diesel production. Fifty progenies raised from seed sources collected from nine states of India were evaluated after five years of plantation for growth, seed and oil content traits. The progenies showed significant (P> 0.05) differences for all the traits studied. Maximum seed yield/plant (879.37 g), number of capsules/plant (522.67) and plant height (408.33 cm) was recorded in P-44. Maximum oil content observed in P-37 (36.08%) followed by P-5 (35.64%). The magnitude of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than the corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters studied. Heritability was highest for oil content (95.49%) and 100-seed weight (87.75%) followed by seed yield (75.54%). Total capsules/plant exhibited highest genetic advance (92.69%) followed by number of branches per plant (64.32%). Hierarchical Euclidean cluster analysis of all 50 progenies using D2 statistics was done where the D2 analysis grouped the progenies into five clusters. The intra cluster distances ranged from 1.33 to 2.72. The maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster II and V (6.43) followed by I and V indicating greater divergence among progenies belonging to these clusters and an attempt to cross the progenies in these clusters should bring out desirable gene combinations. These progenies showed considerable potential which can be tapped for planting and selecting the improved varieties

    Survival of orbiting in 20^{20}Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + 12^{12}C reactions

    The inclusive energy distributions of fragments with Z ≄\geq 3 emitted from the bombardment of 12^{12}C by 20^{20}Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range Ξlab∌\theta_{lab} \sim 10∘^\circ - 50∘^\circ. Damped fragment yields in all cases have been found to be characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites; for B, C fragments, average Q-values, , were independent of the centre of mass emission angle (Ξc.m\theta_{c.m}), and the angular distributions followed ∌\sim1/sinΞc.m\theta_{c.m} like variation, signifying long life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. Total yields of these fragments have been found to be much larger compared to the standard statistical model predictions of the same.     The inclusive energy distributions of the complex fragments (3 ≀\leq Z ≀\leq 7) emitted from the bombardment of ^{12}C by ^{20}Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range 10o≀Ξlab≀^{o} \leq \theta_{lab} \leq 50^{o}. Damped fragment yields in all the cases have been found to be the characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites. The binary fragment yields are compared with the standard statistical model predictions. Enhanced yields of entrance channel fragments (5 ≀\leq Z ≀\leq 7) indicate the survival of orbiting-like process in ^{20}Ne + ^{12}C system at these energies.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure

    Dissipation of angular momentum in light heavy ion collision

    The inclusive energy distributions of fragments (4≀\leqZ≀\leq7) emitted in the reactions 16^{16}O (116 MeV) + 27^{27}Al, 28^{28}Si, 20^{20}Ne (145 MeV) + 27^{27}Al, 59^{59}Co have been measured in the angular range Ξlab\theta_{lab} = 10∘^\circ - 65∘^\circ. Fusion-fission and deep inelastic components of the fragment emission have been extracted from the experimental data. The angular mometum dissipations in fully damped deep inelastic collisions have been estimated assming exit channel configuration similar to those for fusion-fission process. It has been found that, the angular momentum dissipations are more than those predicted by the empirical sticking limit in all cases. The deviation is found to increase with increasing charge transfer (lighter fragments). Qualitatively, this may be due to stronger friction in the exit channel. Moreover, for the heavier system 20^{20}Ne + 59^{59}Co, the overall magnitude of deviation is less as compared to those for the lighter systems, {\it i.e.}, 16^{16}O + 27^{27}Al, 28^{28}Si, 20^{20}Ne + 27^{27}Al. This may be due to lesser overlap in time scales of fusion and deep inelastic time scales for heavier systems.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Development of Graphene Nanoplatelets Reinforced Shape Memory Polyurethane and Their DMA Studies

    Shape memory nanocomposites have been synthesized using ether type shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). A twin screw co-rotating microcompounder with a back flow channel has been employed to ensure proper dispersion of GNPs in the polymer matrix. Four compositions of GNPs in SMPU have been prepared. Morphology of fractured nanocomposites reveals uniform dispersion of graphene in SMPU. The dynamic-thermo-mechanical properties of nanocomposites at 0.1 and 10 Hz have been studied. Addition of 1 phr GNPs increases storage modulus of SMPU from 2.8 to 3.73 GPa and the value of tan ÎŽ peak has been decreased from 0.81 to 0.53. The GNPs in SMPU matrix influence shape recovery which improves with the addition of GNPs with in experimental range

    Development of Nano SiO2 Particles Dispersed Shape Memory Epoxy Composites

    Thermo responsive shape memory epoxy based composites are being investigated for their excellent mechanical and thermal properties. In present study the thermosetting epoxy containing different composition of SiO2 nano particles ranging from 1 to 4 wt. % have been prepared through solvent casting route. Developed composites have been studied for grain analysis, FTIR, shape recovery, impact strength and hardness. Addition of 3 wt. % SiO2 improves hardness and impact strength significantly. Average grain size of SiO2 particles increase at higher wt. % of SiO2 in polymer matrix due to agglomeration of nanoparticles

    The influence of neighborhood characteristics on police officers\u27 encounters with persons suspected to have a serious mental illness

    Objective: Police officers\u27 decisions and behaviors are impacted by the neighborhood context in which police encounters occur. For example, officers may use greater force and be more likely to make arrests in disadvantaged neighborhoods. We examined whether neighborhood characteristics influence police encounters with individuals suspected to have a serious mental illness, addictive disorder, or developmental disability. Method: We obtained data on 916 encounters from 166 officers in six jurisdictions in Georgia, USA and abstracted geographical data pertaining to the location of these encounters from United States Decennial Census data. Encounters were nested within 163 census tracts. Officer-reported data covered general encounter characteristics, the officer\u27s perception of the subject\u27s condition, subject demographics, use of force, and disposition of the encounter (e.g., arrest v. referral or transport to treatment services). Geographical data included 17 variables representing population and housing characteristics of the census tracts, from which three indices pertaining to neighborhood income, stability, and immigration status were derived using factor-analytic techniques. We then examined associations of these indices with various encounter-related variables using multi-level analysis. Results: Encounters taking place in higher-income and higher-stability census tracts were more likely to be dispatch-initiated and take place in a private home compared to those in lower-income and lower-stability neighborhoods. In higher-income neighborhoods, encounters were more likely to involve a subject suspected to have a mental illness (as opposed to an addictive disorder or developmental disability) and less likely to involve a subject suspected to have alcohol problems. The officer\u27s level of force used was not associated with neighborhood factors. Regarding disposition, although the likelihood of arrest was unrelated to neighborhood characteristics, encounters taking place in higher-immigrant neighborhoods were more likely to result in referral or transport to services than those in lower-immigrant neighborhoods. Conclusion: Neighborhood characteristics are important to consider in research on police interactions with individuals with serious mental illnesses, addictive disorders, or developmental disabilities.     It is shown that in the presence of anisotropic kinetic dissipation existence of scale invariant power law spectrum of plasma turbulence is possible. Obtained scale invariant spectrum is not associated with the constant flux of any physical quantity.
