    Causal Analysis of an Agent-Based Model of Human Behaviour

    This article investigates causal relationships leading to emergence in an agent-based model of human behaviour. A new method based on nonlinear structural causality is formulated and practically demonstrated. The method is based on the concept of acausal partitionof a model variable which quantifies the contribution of various factors to its numerical value. Causal partitions make it possible to judge the relative importance of contributing factors over crucial early periods in which the emergent behaviour of a system begins to form. They can also serve as the predictors of emergence. The time-evolution of their predictive power and its distribution among their components hint at the deeper causes of emergence and the possibilities to control it

    Development of a universal group 2 influenza virus vaccine using chimeric hemagglutinin constructs

    The stalk domain of the hemagglutinin (HA) has become the prime target for universal influenza virus vaccine development in the last few years. Unlike the HA head domain, the immunosubdominant stalk domain is conserved to a higher level within each influenza virus HA group. Sequential vaccination with chimeric HA (cHA) vaccine constructs consisting of the same HA stalk and exotic head domains has proven to re-direct the immune response towards the stalk domain. This vaccination concept provides the basis for the development of more broadly cross-protective vaccines that are less affected by antigenic drift and shift, one of the main drawbacks of currently marketed influenza vaccines. Most influenza virus vaccines are licensed as inactivated split vaccines. They are manufactured based on HA content with little to no information and standardization of neuraminidase (NA) content. Virus inactivation is generally performed with alkylating agents such as formalin (FA) or β-propiolactone (βPL), rendering the virus unable to infect or replicate. Though safe, whole inactivated virus vaccines can be highly reactogenic. Virus splitting with detergents like sodium deoxycholate (SDCO) and Triton X-100 (TX-100), which dissociate the virus into smaller parts while maintaining a good immunogenicity profile, are typically employed. To date, there are several studies assessing the effect of a variety of inactivating and splitting agents on influenza viruses, but little is known about the impact of combining these agents on HA stalk conformation and NA activity.     Happy diamond anniversary JMS! A decade analysis of the Journal of Management Studies

    The Journal of Management Studies, founded in 1963, is celebrating its 60 th year. Clark et al. (2014) conducted a bibliometric analysis for its 50 th anniversary assessing whether the journal had maintained its leading international ranking and sustained its mission to serve as a broad-based management outlet. In this review, we build on and extend their findings by examining trends in the journal over the past decade (2012–22). We present a broader analysis of JMS by exploring its unique identity within the management journal ecosystem and examining its scope and breadth in terms of topics, methods, and author demographics to document JMS's evolution, impact, reach, and accessibility. We develop a new bibliometric framework that employs a mix of qualitative and quantitative analyses (including regression, text, and language analysis) to cover a broad range of considerations for a journal and its stakeholders. In so doing, we contribute to the bibliometric and review research areas by proposing new metrics (related to diversity, equity, and inclusion) and analysis tools to assess the relative position of an academic journal. Employing this framework, we conclude that JMS has retained and enhanced its position as a leading, cutting-edge general management journal.</p

    Lattice Bosonization

    A free lattice fermion field theory in 1+1 dimensions can be interpreted as SOS-type model, whose spins are integer-valued. We point out that the relation between these spins and the fermion field is similar to the abelian bosonization relation between bosons and fermions in the continuum. Though on the lattice the connected 2n2n-point correlation functions of the integer-valued spins are not zero for any n1n \ge 1, the two-point correlation function of these spins is that of free bosons in the infrared. We also conjecture the form of the Wess-Zumino-Witten chiral field operator in a nonabelian lattice fermion model. These constructions are similar in spirit to the ``twistable string" idea of Krammer and Nielsen.Comment: 8 pages, latex, no figure

    Integrated System for Hydraulic Simulations

    The work described in this paper is aimed at applying and co-operating of modern information technologies and mathematical modeling to make a risk analysis of the water-supply in big cities. It is instrumental in the investigation of the hydraulics of water-supply systems using the simulation model EPANET executed on the underlying high-performance computing infrastructure. The simulation process is integrated with the GIS environment in order to correct input data and visualize the simulation output. Input data for the model can be modified directly within the designed scientific gateway which enables hydraulic domain experts to interact comfortably with the HPC capacity. Furthermore, the system includes some data mining capabilities forming bridges between the hydraulic data storage and available hydrological measurements focused on water consumption modeling and predictions. In simulating the main emphasis is given to optimize the measure of a similarity between the mathematical model and the real system in order to obtain reliable results
