[EN] The short paper introduces and discusses the concept of a workshop for students of the Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology study program at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, based on theoretical aspects of the experiential learning theory as well as Design Thinking. The goal of the workshop was to enhance the learning outcome of students of this practice-oriented study program. The paper proposes drivers of change for experience-oriented teaching methods as well as reflects on the experiential learning theory and design thinking approaches in education for our case, followed by an elaborate description of the conducted workshops and a discussion of the respective outcomes and experiences. The paper emphazises the observational insight, that learning from active experience as well as through creative tasks should help enhancing cognitive competencies through the application and further development of imparted topical knowledge. The presented gadget workshop aimed at increasing engagement and motivation in the respective class and, as a result of observations, enabled further research on student learning as well as course-relevant practical class activitites.Jäger, J.; Korkut, S.; Dornberger, R. Success Factors of Online Learning Videos

    No full text
Videos have emerged as a dominant medium for educational purposes in many Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platforms. Online learning videos are visual components of the online learning platforms. They are particularly interesting for students who are visual learners and who learn best by watching the short format engaging videos rather than by just reading or listening to course materials. The paper focuses on the categorization of factors that are responsible for the success/popularity of online learning videos. The research is based on the literature review and video observations of the MOOC platforms, in particular of the Khan Academy and Coursera. In this paper, we propose a tabular and a spider graph as a condensed overview of categories that should commonly be utilized by the online learning video production to make them successful

A Rare Cause of Colonic Obstruction “Colonic Intussusception”: Report of Two Cases

    No full text
Colocolic intussusceptions are rare clinical entities in adults and almost always caused by a leading lesion which often warrants resection. Mostly being malignant, the leading lesions are rarely benign lesions where intraluminal lipomas are the most frequent among them. Most adult intussusceptions require surgical resection owing to two major reasons: common presence of a leading lesion and significantly high risk of malignancy—reaching as high as 65% regardless of the anatomic site—of the leading lesion. Resection of the affected segment is usually the treatment of choice, since preoperative diagnosis of the lesion is usually ineffective and most leading lesions are malignant. This paper represents two cases of adult colocolic intussusception caused by intraluminal lipomas with a brief review of the literature

Dermal and Ophthalmic Findings in Pseudohypoaldosteronism

    No full text
Pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) is defined as a state of resistance to aldosterone, a hormone crucial for electrolyte equilibrium. The genetically transmitted type of PHA is primary hypoaldosteronism. Secondary hypoaldosteronism develops as a result of hydronephrosis or hydroureter. PHA patients suffer from severe hyponatremia and a severe clinical condition due to severe loss of salt can be encountered in the neonatal period. Dermal findings in the form of miliaria rubra can also develop in these patients. With the loss of salt, abnormal accumulation of sebum in the eye due to a defect in the sodium channels can also occur. In this paper, a case of PHA in a newborn showing typical dermatological and ophthalmological findings is presented

Endothelial Dysfunction in Steatotic Human Donor Livers: A Pilot Study of the Underlying Mechanism During Subnormothermic Machine Perfusion

Background: Steatosis is a major risk factor for primary nonfunction in liver transplantations. Steatotic livers recover poorly from ischemia reperfusion injury, in part due to alterations in the microcirculation, although the exact mechanism is unclear. In this study, we tested if there were any alterations in the shear stress sensing Kruppel-like factor 2 (KLF2) and its likely downstream consequences in the ex vivo perfused human liver endothelium, which would imply perturbations in microcirculatory flow in macrosteatotic livers disrupts laminar flow to evaluate if this is a potential therapeutic target for steatotic livers. Methods: Using a subnormothermic machine perfusion system, 5 macrosteatotic and 4 nonsteatotic human livers were perfused for 3 hours. Flow, resistance, and biochemical profile were monitored. Gene expression levels of nitric oxide synthase 3 (eNOS), KLF2, and thrombomodulin were determined. Nitric oxide (NO) was measured in the perfusion fluid and activation of eNOS was measured with Western blotting. Results: Flow dynamics, injury markers, and bile production were similar in both groups. Kruppel-like factor 2 expression was significantly higher in nonsteatotic livers. Western blotting analyses showed significantly higher levels of activated eNOS in nonsteatotic livers, consistent with an increase in NO production over time. Macrosteatotic livers showed decreased KLF2 upregulation, eNOS activity, and NO production during machine perfusion. Conclusions: These results indicate a perturbed KLF2 sensing in steatotic livers, which aligns with perturbed microcirculatory state. This may indicate endothelial dysfunction and contribute to poor posttransplantation outcomes in fatty livers, and further studies to confirm by evaluation of flow and testing treatments are warranted
