Determining energy relaxation length scales in two-dimensional electron gases

We present measurements of the energy relaxation length scale ℓ\ell in two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs). A temperature gradient is established in the 2DEG by means of a heating current, and then the elevated electron temperature TeT_e is estimated by measuring the resultant thermovoltage signal across a pair of deferentially biased bar-gates. We adapt a model by Rojek and K\"{o}nig [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{90}, 115403 (2014)] to analyse the thermovoltage signal and as a result extract ℓ\ell, TeT_e, and the power-law exponent αi\alpha_i for inelastic scattering events in the 2DEG. We show that in high-mobility 2DEGs, ℓ\ell can attain macroscopic values of several hundred microns, but decreases rapidly as the carrier density nn is decreased. Our work demonstrates a versatile low-temperature thermometry scheme, and the results provide important insights into heat transport mechanisms in low-dimensional systems and nanostructures. These insights will be vital for practical design considerations of future nanoelectronic circuits. We acknowledge funding from the Leverhulme Trust, UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK.This is the author accepted manuscript. Unusual cause of exercise-induced ventricular fibrillation in a well-trained adult endurance athlete: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

The diseases responsible for sudden deaths in athletes differ considerably with regard to age. In young athletes, congenital malformations of the heart and/or vascular system cause the majority of deaths and can only be detected noninvasively by complex diagnostics. In contrast, in older athletes who die suddenly, atherosclerotic disease of the coronary arteries is mostly found. Reports of congenital coronary anomalies as a cause of sudden death in older athletes are rare.

Case presentation

A 48-year-old man who was a well-trained, long-distance runner collapsed at the finish of a half marathon because of a myocardial infarction with ventricular fibrillation. Coronary angiography showed an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left sinus of Valsalva with minimal wall alterations. Multislice computed tomography of the coronary arteries confirmed these findings. Cardiomagnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a mild hypokinesia of the basal right- and left-ventricular posterior wall. An electrophysiological study showed an inducible temporary polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and an inducible ventricular fibrillation. The athlete was subsequently treated by acetylsalicylic acid 100 mg (0-1-0), bisoprolol 2.5 mg (1-0-0) and atorvastatin 10 mg (0-0-1) and was instructed to keep his training intensity under the 'individual anaerobic threshold'. Intense and long-lasting exercise under extreme environmental conditions, particularly heat, should also be avoided.

Conclusion

This case report presents a coronary anomaly as the most likely reason for an exercise-induced myocardial infarction with ventricular fibrillation in a well-trained 48-year-old endurance athlete. Therefore, coronary anomalies have also to be considered as a possible cause of cardiac problems in older athletes.</p

Shape Memory Micro- and Nanowire Libraries for the High-Throughput Investigation of Scaling Effects

The scaling behavior of Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory thin-film micro-and nanowires of different geometry is investigated with respect to its influence on the martensitic transformation properties. Two processes for the high throughput fabrication of Ti-Ni-Cu micro-to nanoscale thin film wire libraries and the subsequent investigation of the transformation properties are reported. The libraries are fabricated with compositional and geometrical (wire width) variations to investigate the influence of these parameters on the transformation properties. Interesting behaviors were observed: Phase transformation temperatures change in the range from 1 to 72 degrees C (austenite finish, (A(f)), 13 to 66 degrees C (martensite start, M-s) and the thermal hysteresis from -3.5 to 20 K. It is shown that a vanishing hysteresis can be achieved for special combinations of sample geometry and composition
