Constraints on mass matrices due to measured property of the mixing matrix
It is shown that two specific properties of the unitary matrix can be
expressed directly in terms of the matrix elements and eigenvalues of the
hermitian matrix which is diagonalized by . These are the asymmetry
, of with respect to the main diagonal
and the Jarlskog invariant .
These expressions for and provide constraints on possible
mass matrices from the available data on .Comment: 5 pages, Late
Open-architecture Implementation of Fragment Molecular Orbital Method for Peta-scale Computing
We present our perspective and goals on highperformance computing for
nanoscience in accordance with the global trend toward "peta-scale computing."
After reviewing our results obtained through the grid-enabled version of the
fragment molecular orbital method (FMO) on the grid testbed by the Japanese
Grid Project, National Research Grid Initiative (NAREGI), we show that FMO is
one of the best candidates for peta-scale applications by predicting its
effective performance in peta-scale computers. Finally, we introduce our new
project constructing a peta-scale application in an open-architecture
implementation of FMO in order to realize both goals of highperformance in
peta-scale computers and extendibility to multiphysics simulations.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, proceedings of the 2nd IEEE/ACM international

A Cardiac Rhabdomyoma in a Guinea Pig
A guinea pig (9-week-old) that had been placed in a control group for a
pharmacological test was found to have a single nodule on the surface of the
right ventricular wall. In a transverse section of the heart after fixation, a
whitish mass was found that extended from the subendocardium to the
subepicardium of the right ventricular wall. Histopathological examination
revealed a spongy network consisting of vacuolated spaces in the myocardium of
the right ventricle extending to the myocardium and subepicardium of the right
atrium. The vacuolated space was PAS-positive. Immunohistochemical examinations
revealed that the lesions contained striated fibers that were positive for
anti-desmin and anti-myoglobin. Electron micrographs revealed the lesions
resulting in affected striated muscle fibers and accumulations of many glycogen
granules. Based on the findings, the lesions were diagnosed as a cardiac
rhabdomyoma. This is the first report of application of immunohistochemical
examinations to diagnosis of cardiac rhabdomyoma in the guinea pig
Relation between the neutrino and quark mixing angles and grand unification
We argue that there exists simple relation between the quark and lepton
mixings which supports the idea of grand unification and probes the underlying
robust bi-maximal fermion mixing structure of still unknown flavor physics. In
this framework the quark mixing matrix is a parameter matrix describing the
deviation of neutrino mixing from exactly bi-maximal, predicting
theta_{sol}+theta_C=pi/4, where theta_C is the Cabibbo angle,
theta_{atm}+theta_{23}^{CKM}=pi/4 and theta_{13}^{MNS} ~ theta_{13}^{CKM} ~
O(lambda^3), in a perfect agreement with experimental data. Both non-Abelian
and Abelian flavor symmetries are needed for such a prediction to be realistic.
An example flavor model capable to explain this flavor mixing pattern, and to
induce the measured quark and lepton masses, is outlined.Comment: references added, title changed in journa

Effective and Steady Differentiation of a Clonal Derivative of P19CL6 Embryonal Carcinoma Cell Line into Beating Cardiomyocytes
The P19CL6 cell line is a useful model to study cardiac differentiation in vitro. However, large variations were noticed in the differentiation rates among previous reports as well as our individual experiments. To overcome the unstable differentiation, we established P19CL6-A1, a new clonal derivative of P19CL6 that could differentiate into cardiomyocytes more efficiently and stably than the parent using the double stimulation with 5-Aza and DMSO based on the previous report. We also introduced a new software, Visorhythm, that can analyze the temporal variations in the beating rhythms and can chart correlograms displaying the oscillated rhythms. Using P19CL6-A1-derived cardiomyocytes and the software, we demonstrated that the correlograms could clearly display the enhancement of beating rates by cardiotonic reagents. These indicate that a combination of P19CL6-A1 and Visorhythm is a useful tool that can provide invaluable assistance in inotropic drug discovery, drug screening, and toxicity testing
Large Lepton Mixing and Nonsymmetric Mass Matrices with Flavor 2 <-> 3 Symmetry
We analyze the lepton sector of a recently proposed nonsymmetric mass matrix
model. Our model gives a unified description of quark and lepton with the same
texture form based on an extended flavor symmetry with a
phase. By investigating possible types of assignment for masses, we find that
the model can lead to large lepton mixings which are consistent with
experimental values. We also find that the model predicts a very small value,
, for the lepton mixing matrix element square .
The CP violating phases in the lepton mixing matrix and a suppression of the
averaged neutrino mass in the neutrinoless double beta decay are also
predicted.Comment: 15pages, 2figure
