Alteration in elemental and functional composition of heated peat humic acids

    Get PDF
The article analyzes the effect of thermal modification of different-type peat on the alteration of elemental and functional composition of peat humic acids. Based on the data of IR-spectra and readings of electron paramagnetic resonance, structural alterations are identified. It is shown that the impact of peat characteristics on humic acids is preserved after thermal modification. It is revealed that the strongest alteration of humic acid composition and properties caused by peat heating are typical to humic acid samples extracted from the peat with low decomposition degree

Histotype-Dependent Oligodendroglial PrP Pathology in Sporadic CJD: A Frequent Feature of the M2C “Strain”

    Get PDF
In sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, molecular subtypes are neuropathologically well identified by the lesioning profile and the immunohistochemical PrPd deposition pattern in the grey matter (histotypes). While astrocytic PrP pathology has been reported in variant CJD and some less frequent histotypes (e.g., MV2K), oligodendroglial pathology has been rarely addressed. We assessed a series of sCJD cases with the aim to identify particular histotypes that could be more prone to harbor oligodendroglial PrPd. Particularly, the MM2C phenotype, in both its more "pure" and its mixed MM1+2C or MV2K+2C forms, showed more frequent oligodendroglial PrP pathology in the underlying white matter than the more common MM1/MV1 and VV2 histotypes, and was more abundant in patients with a longer disease duration. We concluded that the MM2C strain was particularly prone to accumulate PrPd in white matter oligodendrocytes

The object of the study is a system for gathering and treating oil and associated petroleum gas, and the subject is the processes of oil separation, compression of associated petroleum gas, separation and utilization of light liquid hydrocarbons. The purpose of the work is to reduce losses of light hydrocarbons and increase the yield of commercial oil by developing a resource-saving technology for the preparation and compression of associated petroleum gas. In the process of the study, the following was done: modeling the process of preparation and pumping of oil and associated petroleum gas, an analysis was made of the change in the properties of oil in various ways of utilizing a wide fraction of light hydrocarbons in an oil treatment unit

The object of the research was the project “Clean Water” of the Tomsk Region. The purpose of the work is to create a model of financial project management In the course of the work, a model of financial management of the project focused on the main processes taking place within the project was developed. As a result of the work, a model of financial management of the project was developed, allowing to single out the processes of the project and, on their basis, carry out a cost analysis

Challenging the holy grail of hospital accreditation: A cross sectional study of inpatient satisfaction in the field of cardiology

    Get PDF
Extent: 7p.Background: Subjective parameters such as quality of life or patient satisfaction gain importance as outcome parameters and benchmarks in health care. In many countries hospitals are now undergoing accreditation as mandatory or voluntary measures. It is believed but unproven that accreditations positively influence quality of care and patient satisfaction. The present study aims to assess in a defined specialty (cardiology) the relationship between patient satisfaction (as measured by the recommendation rate) and accreditation status. Methods: Consecutive patients discharged from 25 cardiology units received a validated patient satisfaction questionnaire. Data from 3,037 patients (response rate > 55%) became available for analysis. Recommendation rate was used as primary endpoint. Different control variables such as staffing level were considered. Results: The 15 accredited units did not differ significantly from the 10 non-accredited units regarding main hospital (i.e. staffing levels, no. of beds) and patient (age, gender) characteristics. The primary endpoint "recommendation rate of a given hospital" for accredited hospitals (65.6%, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 63.4 - 67.8%) and hospitals without accreditation (65.8%, 95% CI 63.1 - 68.5%) was not significantly different. Conclusion: Our results support the notion that - at least in the field of cardiology - successful accreditation is not linked with measurable better quality of care as perceived by the patient and reflected by the recommendation rate of a given institution. Hospital accreditation may represent a step towards quality management, but does not seem to improve overall patient satisfaction.Cornelia Sack, Peter Lütkes, Wolfram Günther, Raimund Erbel, Karl-Heinz Jöckel and Gerald J Holtman

Cross-realm assessment of climate change impacts on species' abundance trends

    Get PDF
Climate change, land-use change, pollution and exploitation are among the main drivers of species' population trends; however, their relative importance is much debated. We used a unique collection of over 1,000 local population time series in 22 communities across terrestrial, freshwater and marine realms within central Europe to compare the impacts of long-term temperature change and other environmental drivers from 1980 onwards. To disentangle different drivers, we related species' population trends to species- and driver-specific attributes, such as temperature and habitat preference or pollution tolerance. We found a consistent impact of temperature change on the local abundances of terrestrial species. Populations of warm-dwelling species increased more than those of cold-dwelling species. In contrast, impacts of temperature change on aquatic species' abundances were variable. Effects of temperature preference were more consistent in terrestrial communities than effects of habitat preference, suggesting that the impacts of temperature change have become widespread for recent changes in abundance within many terrestrial communities of central Europe.Additionally, we appreciate the open access marine data provided by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. Determination of nutrient salts by automatic methods both in seawater and brackish water: the phosphate blank

9 páginas, 2 tablas, 2 figurasThe main inconvenience in determining nutrients in seawater by automatic methods is simply solved: the preparation of a suitable blank which corrects the effect of the refractive index change on the recorded signal. Two procedures are proposed, one physical (a simple equation to estimate the effect) and the other chemical (removal of the dissolved phosphorus with ferric hydroxide).Support for this work came from CICYT (MAR88-0245 project) and Conselleria de Pesca de la Xunta de GaliciaPeer reviewe
