Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala is an ornamental cabbage cultivated as foliage for cutting due to the coloration of the rosette formed by its apical leaves. The plant height and the diameter of the rosettes may be modified through the planting density; however, there is not enough information about this. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the planting density of four cultivars of B. oleracea L. var. acephala of the series F1 Crane: Bicolor, Pink, Red and Rose, on the plant height, rosette diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, root volume, and aerial and root fresh and dry weight. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six repetitions. The combination of density (56 plants.m-2 and 28 plants.m-2) and cultivar allowed obtaining eight treatments. The results showed that the treatments with high planting density improved commercial quality indices: achieving greater stem height and more compact and smaller diameter rosettes, leading to lower values of the rest of the vegetative variables evaluated. Also, as productive alternative, it would allow a more efficient use of the soil and reduce crop management activities such as manual leaves removal. Fil: Kim, Yoo Ree . Universidad de Buenos Aires. The first case of abdominal mycotic aneurysm caused by K1 hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae in a healthy adult

Get PDF
Incidence of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) infection has been steadily increasing in the Asia-Pacific rim. The characteristic of hvKp infection is its ability to cause multiple site infections and unpredictable metastatic spread in the community. We describe the first case of mycotic aneurysm caused by hvKp serotype K1 in a previously healthy man and review the literature. Of a total of 13 cases, including our case, three cases were related to hvKp. Among patients with hvKp, the level of mycotic aneurysm in most patients was the infrarenal aorta, and they underwent an aortic graft or coil embolization. All strains were susceptible to most antimicrobial agents, except ampicillin. Early detection of hvKp can help to prevent the metastatic spread of pathogens and be useful for optimal patient care and epidemiologic research

LOWER EXTREMITY KINEMATICS OF SKI MOTION ON HILLS

Get PDF
This research study aimed to collect thre- dimensional joint angles of the lower extremity during a basic ski motion in order to provide more quantitative teaching guide-lines for ski instructors. Eleven infrared cameras were placed to cover the capture volume of three different stopping movements (e.g. “Pflug Fahren”) on hills. Six ski instructors participated in the test. Three trials of each stop were selected for comparison. Based on the results, skiers tended to use the edge of the ski and maintain a wider “V” shape at the shortest stop distance (e.g. 2m) compared to the other stops. Also, each skier had to invert the foot with a less flexed and more abducted knee and hip position as the stopping distance was decreased. This information will be useful for the development of more objective teaching guide-lines for beginner skiers

The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of graded dietary selenium (Se) on organ weight and Se concentrations in tissues and to develop equations for estimating dietary Se intake in pigs. Sixteen barrows (initial body weight = 30.0 ± 2.6) were allotted to four dietary treatments including graded Se supplementations with 0, 1, 5, and 50 mg/kg of diet. The experimental diets fed to the pigs for 30 d, and then the pigs were euthanized, and the organs, muscle, and urine samples were collected. The hair and blood samples of pigs were collected on d 15 and 30. Equations were developed for predicting daily Se intake using the Se concentration in plasma, hair, liver, kidneys, muscle, or urine. For graded dietary Se concentrations, linear and quadratic effects on the final body weight, weight and relative weight of liver and kidneys were not observed. The Se concentration in plasma, hair, liver, kidneys, muscle, and urine were linearly and quadratically increased as dietary Se concentration increased (P 0.81, P < 0.001). The equations for estimating dietary Se intake using the Se concentration in the plasma, hair, or organ as an independent variable were significant (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the dietary Se concentration was well reflected in the Se concentration in the plasma, hair, liver, kidneys, and urine. The Se concentration in the plasma, hair, liver, and kidneys can be used as an independent variable for estimating the Se intake

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors in recent clinical trials for cancer therapy

Heritable changes in gene expression that are not based upon alterations in the DNA sequence are defined as epigenetics. The most common mechanisms of epigenetic regulation are the methylation of CpG islands within the DNA and the modification of amino acids in the N-terminal histone tails. In the last years, it became evident that the onset of cancer and its progression may not occur only due to genetic mutations but also because of changes in the patterns of epigenetic modifications. In contrast to genetic mutations, which are almost impossible to reverse, epigenetic changes are potentially reversible. This implies that they are amenable to pharmacological interventions. Therefore, a lot of work in recent years has focussed on the development of small molecule enzyme inhibitors like DNA-methyltransferase inhibitors or inhibitors of histone-modifying enzymes. These may reverse misregulated epigenetic states and be implemented in the treatment of cancer or other diseases, e.g., neurological disorders. Today, several epigenetic drugs are already approved by the FDA and the EMEA for cancer treatment and around ten histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are in clinical development. This review will give an update on recent clinical trials of the HDAC inhibitors used systemically that were reported in 2009 and 2010 and will present an overview of different biomarkers to monitor the biological effects

Validity of a Mobile Application to Diagnose Temporomandibular Disorders

This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of a mobile application by comparing its diagnoses to those of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine specialists and further imaging results (CBCT and MRI) in 500 patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The research focused on three diagnostic categories: the initial specialist diagnoses, the final diagnoses after imaging, and the mobile app’s diagnoses. The concordance rates, sensitivities, specificities, and positive predictive values of the diagnoses were examined, with further imaging serving as the gold standard. The mobile app demonstrated a high concordance rate compared to both the final (0.93) and the initial specialists’ diagnoses (0.86). The sensitivities, specificities, and positive predictive values also indicated strong reliability, affirming the app’s diagnostic validity. Although the concordance rate was slightly lower when comparing the app’s diagnoses to the imaging results (CBCT and MRI), the specialists’ diagnoses yielded similar results. The study suggests that user-friendly diagnostic mobile applications, based on the diagnostic criteria for TMD, could enhance the clinical management of TMD. Given the reliability of mobile applications for diagnostic purposes, their wider implementation could facilitate the provision of appropriate and timely treatments for patients with TMD

Mulberry Fruit Prevents Diabetes and Diabetic Dementia by Regulation of Blood Glucose through Upregulation of Antioxidative Activities and CREB/BDNF Pathway in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Mice

No full text
Although mulberry fruit has various beneficial effects, its effect on diabetes-related dementia remains unknown. We investigated whether the ethyl acetate fraction of ethanolic extract of mulberry fruit (MFE) could alleviate biochemical and behavioral deficits in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. In the diabetic mice, MFE considerably abolished multiple deficits, e.g., body weight reduction; water and food intake increase; and hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hypoinsulinism, and hypertrophy of the liver, kidneys, spleen, and brain. A 200 mg/kg MFE dose reduced malondialdehyde levels and improved antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver, kidney, and brain tissues. MFE attenuated hyperglycemia-induced memory impairments and acetylcholine deprivation, protected neuronal cells in CA1 and CA3 regions via p-CREB/BDNF pathway activation, and reduced amyloid-β precursor protein and p-Tau expressions in the brain tissue. In conclusion, MFE exerts antidiabetic and neuroprotective effects by upregulating antioxidative activities and p-CREB/BDNF pathway in chronic diabetes. Therefore, MFE may be used as a therapeutic agent for diabetes and diabetic neurodegenerative diseases

We sought to evaluate the outcomes of postoperative three-month dual antiplatelet therapy in patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) following off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) with exclusively arterial grafts. Between 2013–2016, dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with either aspirin + clopidogrel (ASA + CPD group, n = 100) or aspirin + ticagrelor (ASA + TCG group, n = 169) was prescribed postoperatively in 269 NSTE-ACS patients after total arterial OPCAB. Patients with indications for other oral anticoagulants were excluded from the study. Three-month DAPT was completed in 259 patients (96%); ASA + CPD group (n = 94) vs. ASA + TCG group (n = 165). A one-to-one propensity score matching was performed. Unadjusted comparison between the groups showed no significant difference in overall survival (P = 0.253) and composite outcome of major adverse cerebrovascular and cardiovascular event (MACCE) and major bleeding (P = 0.276). The rate of freedom from composite outcome at one year in the ASA + CPD and ASA + TCG groups was 91 ± 3% and 93 ± 2%, respectively. In multivariable analysis, being in the ASA + TCG group did not increase the risk of the composite outcome of MACCE and major bleeding (P = 0.972, hazard ratio: 1.0, 95% confidence interval: 0.4–2.3). Propensity score-matched comparison (76 pairs) showed no significant difference in the overall survival (P = 0.423) and composite outcome between the groups (P = 0.442). In the setting of exclusive arterial grafting, post-OPCAB three-month DAPT showed acceptable outcomes in patients with NSTE-ACS. There was no significant difference in overall survival or composite outcome of MACCE and major bleeding between the ASA + CPD and ASA + TCG groups

Results of Protocol-based Perioperative Management in Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting for Patients with Non-dialysis-dependent Chronic Kidney Disease

No full text
Background: Recent studies have demonstrated the benefits of off-pump coronary bypass grafting over the on-pump technique in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). To further reduce the risk of acute kidney injury and the need for renal replacement therapy, even in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, we adopted protocol-based perioperative management for patients with CKD. Methods: From December 2012 to March 2015, 265 patients underwent isolated off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. To analyze renal function in a stable condition, we excluded 12 dialysis-dependent end stage renal failure and 10 emergency or urgent cases. Among the remaining 243 patients, 208 patients had normal kidney function (normal group), and 35 patients had CKD (CKD group). Minimizing contrast exposure, ensuring adequate hydration, using strict drug dosage adjustment, and optimizing hemodynamic status were key elements of the protocol for the CKD group. Results: The risk of acute kidney injury was about Ă—3 higher in the CKD group than in the normal group (p=0.01). Estimated glomerular filtration rates and serum creatinine levels deteriorated until the third postoperative day in the CKD group. However, by adopting protocol-based perioperative management, this transient renal dysfunction recovered to preoperative levels by the fifth postoperative day without requiring renal replacement therapy in all cases. Conclusion: Off-pump coronary bypass surgery combined with this protocol-based perioperative management strategy in patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD could mostly be performed without renal replacement therapy
