    Analysis of determinant factors of a convention and visitors bureau website service quality: Perspectives of meeting planners

    Website service quality is widely accepted as one of the key determinants of online business success. Several studies identified key factors that determine the website service quality factors appropriate for online business environments (Kaynama & Black, 2000; Van Riel, Liljander, & Jurriens, 2001). A convention and visitors bureau (CVB) website is a service portal that delivers information online about a destination so users can develop an overall image of the location; CVBs struggle to deliver positive destination images because the competition among destinations to host conventions is intense. In spite of the important role of CVBs and the beneficial spillover effect of CVBs, there are few studies available reporting on the unique service qualities of a CVB website; The primary purpose of this study was to examine the determining factors that are appropriate for CVB websites from the meeting planners\u27 perspective. The research questions are: What are the determining factors of service quality of a CVB website? Do the determining factors of CBV website service quality positively influence meeting planners\u27 satisfaction? The new conceptual framework was developed from a variety of destination marketing and Internet marketing concepts: e-servicescape management, web community network, Internet service encounter management, and online system quality; Empirical results indicate that three of the four factors, that is, e-servicescape, web community network, and online system quality are important determinants in evaluating CVB website service quality. The findings also show that three determinants have significant and positive influence on meeting planners\u27 satisfaction. The findings from this study will provide meaningful advice for CVB website quality management. To enhance the CVB website service quality and satisfaction level of meeting planners, these three determinants should be considered of the utmost strategic importance and priority

    Seismic response of beam-column joints rehabilitated with FRP sheets and buckling restrained braces

    An experimental test was performed to evaluate the seismic resistance of reinforced concrete beam-column joints rehabilitated with FRP sheets and Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs). Six beam-column joints were rehabilitated and tested. The test results were compared in terms of hysteresis loops, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and ductility. The comparison result showed that wrapping FRP sheets can contribute to increase the effect of confinement and to delay crack development in the joints. Also retrofitting buckling restrained braces (BRBs) can improve the stiffness and energy dissipation capacity. Both FRP sheets and BRBs can effectively improve the strength, stiffness and ductility

    Flexural Behavior of Posttensioned Flat Plates Depending on Tendon Layout

    This paper discusses the experimental results on the flexural behavior and deflections of posttensioned concrete flat plates depending on tendon layout. One reinforced concrete flat plate and two posttensioned concrete flat plates were manufactured and tested. One-way posttensioning layout and two-way posttensioning layout were considered in this paper. The load-deflection behavior and modes of crack are presented from the test results. Posttension systems effectively controlled crack and deflection. One-way and two-way posttensioning layouts both showed similar maximum load. However, serviceability improved with two-way posttensioning layout compared to one-way posttensioning layout. Also, the yield-line theory was applied to predict the ultimate load for the posttensioned flat plates. The comparison between the test results and estimation by yield-line analysis generally showed good agreement

    Seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames retrofitted with inserted steel frame and adhered waved steel panel

    In this paper, two types of seismic retrofitting methods for reinforced concrete frames were suggested and examined through the cyclic loading tests: one is to insert a steel frame to existing partially masonry infilled concrete frame of the building after removing masonry from the concrete frame and the other is to adhere waved steel panels to the existing masonry fully infilled concrete frame. In order to evaluate validity of the suggested methods in seismic performance, five specimens were manufactured and tested: a bare concrete frame, a partially masonry infilled concrete frame, a masonry infilled concrete frame, a steel frame inserted concrete frame, and a waved steel panel adhered concrete frame. Compared were crack pattern, failure mode, load-displacement relation, ductility, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity. The specimens retrofitted with the inserted steel frame showed a maximum load approximately twice that of the partially masonry infilled frame, and the specimen retrofitted with the adhered waved steel panel showed a maximum load approximately twice that of the masonry fully infilled frame

    Meteorin regulates mesendoderm development by enhancing nodal expression

    During gastrulation, distinct lineage specification into three germ layers, the mesoderm, endoderm and ectoderm, occurs through an elaborate harmony between signaling molecules along the embryonic proximo-distal and anterior-posterior axes, and Nodal signaling plays a key role in the early embryonic development governing embryonic axis formation, mesoderm and endoderm specification, and left-right asymmetry determination. However, the mechanism by which Nodal expression is regulated is largely unknown. Here, we show that Meteorin regulates Nodal expression and is required for mesendoderm development. It is highly expressed in the inner cell mass of blastocysts and further in the epiblast and extra-embryonic ectoderm during gastrulation. Genetic ablation of the Meteorin gene resulted in early embryonic lethality, presumably due to impaired lineage allocation and subsequent cell accumulation. Embryoid body culture using Meteorin-null embryonic stem (ES) cells showed reduced Nodal expression and concomitant impairment of mesendoderm specification. Meteorin-null embryos displayed reduced levels of Nodal transcripts before the gastrulation stage, and impaired expression of Goosecoid, a definitive endoderm marker, during gastrulation, while the proximo-distal and anterior-posterior axes and primitive streak formation were preserved. Our results show that Meteorin is a novel regulator of Nodal transcription and is required to maintain sufficient Nodal levels for endoderm formation, thereby providing new insights in the regulation of mesendoderm allocation.open1113sciescopu

    Analytical Model for Deflections of Bonded Posttensioned Concrete Slabs

    This paper presents a finite element analysis approach to evaluate the flexural behavior of posttensioned two-way slabs depending on the tendon layout. A finite element model was established based on layered and degenerated shell elements. Nonlinearities of the materials are considered using the stress-strain relationships for concrete, reinforcing steel, and prestressing tendons. Flexural testing of the posttensioned two-way slabs was conducted to validate the developed analytical process. Comparing the analytical results with the experimental results in terms of deflections, it showed generally good agreements. Also a parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of different types of tendon layout

    Portulaca oleracea Ameliorates Diabetic Vascular Inflammation and Endothelial Dysfunction in db/db Mice

    Type 2 diabetes is associated with significantly accelerated rates of micro- and macrovascular complications such as diabetic vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of the aqueous extract of Portulaca oleracea L. (AP), an edible plant used as a folk medicine, on diabetic vascular complications. The db/db mice were treated with AP (300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 10 weeks, and AP treatment markedly lowered blood glucose, plasma triglyceride, plasma level of LDL-cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure in diabetic db/db mice. Furthermore, AP significantly increased plasma level of HDL-cholesterol and insulin level. The impairment of ACh- and SNP-induced vascular relaxation of aortic rings were ameliorated by AP treatment in diabetic db/db mice. This study also showed that overexpression of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, MMP-2, and ET-1 were observed in aortic tissues of untreated db/db mice, which were significantly suppressed by treatment with AP. We also found that the insulin immunoreactivity of the pancreatic islets remarkably increased in AP treated db/db mice compared with untreated db/db mice. Taken together, AP suppresses hyperglycemia and diabetic vascular inflammation, and prevents the development of diabetic endothelial dysfunction for the development of diabetes and its vascular complications
