The State of General Operating Support 2011

    Get PDF
In 2011, 1,121 American grantmakers reported $5.9 billion in general operating support, a substantial increase (83 percent) over average core support from 2008-2010. The share of foundation dollars classified as providing this vital type of funding increased from 16 percent to 24 percent. NCRP's "Criteria for Philanthropy at Its Best" encourages grantmakers to provide at least 50 percent of grant dollars for general operating support. Also called "core support," these grants are essential for nonprofits' success: it provides flexible funds that help them respond to unexpected opportunities, builds capacity and leadership development and signals trust between the funder and the grantee

Real Results: Why Strategic Philanthropy is Social Justice Philanthropy

    Get PDF
The crises affecting our nation and the world have prompted philanthropists to become more organized, focused and, perhaps above all, "strategic" in their efforts. The movement toward "strategic philanthropy" has already contributed to greater philanthropic effectiveness. Yet, despite important contributions to education, health, the arts and the environment, it is clear that philanthropy's ultimate impact is still limited. Great disparities along the lines of race, gender, class and other identity markers persist and, in some cases, are even exacerbated. This suggests that something is missing from our sector's understanding of what makes for truly strategic and effective philanthropy:A clear understanding of one's goals includes not only the desired impact but also identifies who will benefit (or not) and how.A commitment to evidence-based strategy cannot ignore the tangible, positive impact -- and often the necessity -- of influencing public policy.Keeping a philanthropic strategy on course requires the input of those who stand to gain or lose the most from grantmaking: the grantees and the communities they serve.Truly strategic philanthropy is social justice philanthropy

Daniels Fund: How Can this Colorado Grantmaker Fuse Donor Vision with Community Needs for Greater Impact

    Get PDF
The Daniels Fund supports a wide variety of programs that preserve the vision and interests of founder Bill Daniels. These include everything from funding scholarships for low-income students, teaching ethics and financial responsibility to youth and funding often-ignored issues like substance abuse, amateur sports and homelessness. While the foundation clearly supports many individuals who need a leg up, its lack of consistency in seeking long-term systemic solutions in these areas undermines its effectiveness

Igniting the Spark: Creating Effective Next Generation Boards

For family foundations and a growing number of donor-advised funds, preparing the next generation for involvement brings special concerns -- and exciting opportunities. Succession is reported to be the single most important issue facing family foundations, according to nearly half (48%) of respondents to the Association for Small Foundations 2011 Foundation Operations and Management Report. At the same time, there is a broad range of experience in families with regard to how next generation family members are involved in family philanthropy. According to the National Center for Family Philanthropy's 2011 study, Current Practices in Family Foundations, a near equal number of respondents "strongly agreed" (34%) or "strongly disagreed" (33%) with the statement "next generation members are playing a significant role in the foundation.

Evaluation of flight efficiency for Stockholm Arlanda Airport arrivals

    Get PDF
Analysis of punctuality of airport arrivals, as well as identification of causes of the delays within transition airspace, is an important step in evaluating performance of the Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA) Air Navigation Services: without knowing the current performance levels, it is difficult to identify which areas could be improved. Deviations from the flight plans is one of the major reasons for arrival delays. In this work, we quantified the impact of the deviations from the flight plans on the fuel burn. One of the main reasons of fuel waste is non- optimal vertical profiles during the descent phase. We calculated how much extra fuel is wasted due to vertical flight inefficiency within Stockholm TMA.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
