The Determinants of Technology Adoption by UK Farmers using Bayesian Model Averaging. The Cases of Organic Production and Computer Usage.
We introduce and implement a reversible jump approach to Bayesian Model Averaging for the Probit model with uncertain regressors. This approach provides a direct estimate of the probability that a variable should be included in the model. Two applications are investigated. The rst is the adoption of organic systems in UK farming, and the second is the inuence of farm and farmer characteristics on the use of a computer on the farm. While there is a correspondence between the conclusions we would obtain with and without model averaging results, we find important di¤erences, particularly in smaller samples.Agriculture, Adoption, Model Averaging, Organic, Computer
Integrating spatial dependence into stochastic frontier analysis
An approach to incorporate spatial dependence into Stochastic Frontier analysis is developed and applied to a sample of 215 dairy farms in England and Wales. A number of alternative specifications for the spatial weight matrix are used to analyse the effect of these on the estimation of spatial dependence. Estimation is conducted using a Bayesian approach and results indicate that spatial dependence is present when explaining technical inefficiency.Spatial dependence, technical efficiency, Bayesian, spatial weight matrix

Kelvin Wave Cascade and Decay of Superfluid Turbulence
Kelvin waves (kelvons)--the distortion waves on vortex lines--play a key part
in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures. We present a
weak-turbulence theory of kelvons. We show that non-trivial kinetics arises
only beyond the local-induction approximation and is governed by three-kelvon
collisions; corresponding kinetic equation is derived. On the basis of the
kinetic equation, we prove the existence of Kolmogorov cascade and find its
spectrum. The qualitative analysis is corroborated by numeric study of the
kinetic equation. The application of the results to the theory of superfluid
turbulence is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, RevTe
Social Security, Social Welfare and the Aging Population
This study examines the effects of pay-as-you-go social security programs in aging economies when the middle-aged both educate their dependent children and subsidize the retirement of the old. Using an overlapping generations framework in which agents are three-period lived but timing of death in the third period is uncertain, we analyze the effects of social security tax schemes, under various demographic assumptions, on capital accumulation, education expenditures, social welfare, and economic growth. We find that in many cases social security crowds out education, and reduces economic growth and social welfare
Capillary-gravity wave resistance in ordinary and magnetic fluids
Wave resistance is the drag force associated to the emission of waves by a
moving disturbance at a fluid free surface. In the case of capillary-gravity
waves it undergoes a transition from zero to a finite value as the speed of the
disturbance is increased. For the first time an experiment is designed in order
to obtain the wave resistance as a function of speed. The effect of viscosity
is explored, and a magnetic fluid is used to extend the available range of
critical speeds. The threshold values are in good agreement with the proposed
theory. Contrary to the theoretical model, however, the measured wave
resistance reveals a non monotonic speed dependence after the threshold.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, submitted to Physical Review Letter
