Do we really drive as we feel?
Learning to drive has been conceptualised as a series of stages which take the learner from mastery of the basic mechanics of driving, through anticipation of other road user's behaviour, to the development of a driving style consistent with the skill achieved in the first two stages (Parker & Stradling, 2002). Deery (1999) suggests that hazard perception is one of the main skills to be acquired in the second stage and that this skill is poorly developed in the inexperienced (and usually young) driver
A colimit decomposition for homotopy algebras in Cat
Badzioch showed that in the category of simplicial sets each homotopy algebra
of a Lawvere theory is weakly equivalent to a strict algebra. In seeking to
extend this result to other contexts Rosicky observed a key point to be that
each homotopy colimit in simplicial sets admits a decomposition into a homotopy
sifted colimit of finite coproducts, and asked the author whether a similar
decomposition holds in the 2-category of categories Cat. Our purpose in the
present paper is to show that this is the case.Comment: Some notation changed; small amount of exposition added in intr
A Complete Year of User Retrieval Sessions in a Social Sciences Academic Search Engine
In this paper, we present an open data set extracted from the transaction log
of the social sciences academic search engine sowiport. The data set includes a
filtered set of 484,449 retrieval sessions which have been carried out by
sowiport users in the period from April 2014 to April 2015. We propose a
description of interactions performed by the academic search engine users that
can be used in different applications such as result ranking improvement, user
modeling, query reformulation analysis, search pattern recognition.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted short paper at the 21st International

Microwave oven fabricated hybrid memristor devices for non-volatile memory storage
© 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd. Novel hybrid non-volatile memories made using an ultra-fast microwave heating method are reported for the first time. The devices, consisting of aligned ZnO nanorods embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate), require no forming step and exhibit reliable and reproducible bipolar resistive switching at low voltages and with low power usage. We attribute these properties to a combination of the high aspect ratio of the nanorods and the polymeric hybrid structure of the device. The extremely easy, fast and low-cost solution based method of fabrication makes possible the simple and quick production of cheap memory cells
Organizational learning and emotion: constructing collective meaning in support of strategic themes
Missing in the organizational learning literature is an integrative framework that reflects the emotional as well as the cognitive dynamics involved. Here, we take a step in this direction by focusing in depth over time (five years) on a selected organization which manufactures electronic equipment for the office industry. Drawing on personal construct theory, we define organizational learning as the collective re-construal of meaning in the direction of strategically significant themes. We suggest that emotions arise as members reflect on progress or lack of progress in achieving organizational learning. Our evidence suggests that invalidation – where organizational learning fails to correspond with expectations – gives rise to anxiety and frustration, while validation – where organizational learning is aligned with or exceeds expectations – evokes comfort or excitement. Our work aims to capture the key emotions involved as organizational learning proceeds
Relations between the SNO and the Super Kamiokande solar neutrino rates
By comparing the neutrino spectra measured by SNO and Super Kamiokande, we
obtain inequalities between the ratios of observed rate to SSM rate for the two
experiments. These inequalities apply to a possibly energy-dependent reduction
of the SSM flux and to the case of neutrino oscillations. We use them to
examine the relationship between the two experiments expected for the MSW and
``Just-So" oscillation scenarios.Comment: 8 pages + 3 figures, REVTeX, uuencoded file created on a VMS syste
Annular Pancreatitis and Gastric Cancer
Annular pancreas can present in adult life, usually when inflammation of the pancreatic ring causes
duodenal stenosis. Although peptic ulcer is often associated with annular pancreas, an association with
gastric carcinoma has not been previously described. Here we report a patient with annular pancreas,
chronic alcoholic pancreatitis and gastric carcinoma, who was successfully treated by radical proximal
pancreatoduodenectomy
Synthesis and antibacterial effects of cobalt–cellulose magnetic nanocomposites
© The Royal Society of Chemistry. Green synthesis is employed to prepare cobalt/cellulose nanocomposites with cubic (α-cobalt) cobalt as a main component with antibacterial and magnetic properties. An in situ reduction of aqueous solutions of cobalt ions on a model cellulose substrate surface using hydrogen gas affords spherical, cellulose-stabilised cobalt nanoclusters with magnetic properties and an average diameter of 7 nm that are distributed evenly over the surface of the cellulose fibres. These cobalt/cellulose nanocomposites exhibit good antibacterial action against opportunistic pathogens both Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli, A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa), with zones of inhibition up to 15 mm, thereby encouraging the deployment of these advanced materials for the treatment of wastewater or within medical dressings. This method of preparation is compared with the analogous in situ reduction of cobalt ions on a cellulose surface using sodium borohydride as reducing agent
