Physical properties of a new cuprate superconductor Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15-\delta}
We present studies of the thermal, magnetic and electrical transport
properties of reduced polycrystalline Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15-\delta} (Pr247) showing
a superconducting transition at Tc = 10 - 16 K and compare them with those of
as-sintered non-superconducting Pr247. The electrical resistivity in the normal
state exhibited T2 dependence up to approximately 150 K. A clear specific heat
anomaly was observed at Tc for Pr247 reduced in a vacuum for 24 hrs, proving
the bulk nature of the superconducting state. By the reduction treatment, the
magnetic ordering temperature TN of Pr moments decreased from 16 to 11 K, and
the entropy associated with the ordering increased, while the effective
paramagnetic moments obtained from the DC magnetic susceptibility varied from
2.72 to 3.13 mB. The sign of Hall coefficient changed from positive to negative
with decreasing temperature in the normal state of a superconducting Pr247,
while that of as-sintered one was positive down to 5 K. The electrical
resistivity under high magnetic fields was found to exhibit T^a dependence (a =
0.08 - 0.4) at low temperatures. A possibility of superconductivity in the
so-called CuO double chains is discussed.Comment: Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (in press
ベタヒスチンが一側内耳破壊後のラットの前庭代償に与える影響
Background: Vestibular compensation (VC) after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) consists of the initial and late processes. These processes can be evaluated based on the decline in the frequency of spontaneous nystagmus (SN) and the number of MK801-induced Fos-positive neurons in the contralateral medial vestibular nucleus (contra-MVe) in rats. Histamine H3 receptors (H3R) are reported to be involved in the development of VC. Objective: We examined the effects of betahistine, an H3R antagonist, on the initial and late processes of VC in UL rats. Methods: Betahistine dihydrochloride was continuously administered to the UL rats at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/day using an osmotic minipump. MK801 (1.0 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered on days 7, 10, 12, and 14 after UL, while Fos-positive neurons were immunohistochemically stained in the contra-MVe. Results: The SN disappeared after 42 h, and continuous infusion of betahistine did not change the decline in the frequency of SN. The number of MK801-induced Fos-positive neurons in contra-MVe significantly decreased on days 7, 10, and 12 after UL in a dose-dependent manner in the betahistine-treated rats, more so than in the saline-treated rats. Conclusion: These findings suggest that betahistine facilitated the late, but not the initial, process of VC in UL rats
A Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of Undetermined Origin in a Dog
In this report, we describe a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of undetermined
origin in a dog. Necropsy revealed scattered small neoplastic nodules in the
bilateral lungs and a small nodule in the parapancreatic lymph node.
Histopathologically, both pulmonary and lymph nodal nodules showed a similar
histologic pattern, with neoplastic cells being arranged in diffusely
proliferating sheet-like cellular nests separated by variable amounts of fibrous
septa, sometimes forming rosettes and duct-like structures. Scattered small
necrotic foci and invasion to fibrous septa were typically observed. Neoplastic
cells showed round to oval-shaped nuclei with prominent nucleoli and abundant
eosinophilic cytoplasm that were positive for Grimelius’ silver impregnation
staining and immunostaining with cytokeratin, synaptophysin, vasoactive
intestinal peptide and chromogranin A, indicative of the development of a
neuroendocrine carcinoma. However, judging from the distribution of tumors
lacking the portion suggestive of the primary site in any organ examined, as
well as no further indication of differentiation potential of neoplastic cells,
this tumor has so far been diagnosed as neuroendocrine carcinoma of undetermined
origin
Localized ground glass opacities with multiple pulmonary small cysts in adult T-cell leukemia or lymphoma: an "alloy wheel" appearance.
We herein report a case of adult T-cell leukemia or lymphoma showing multiple lung cysts within a localized ground glass opacity (GGO) on computed tomography scan. The patterns of multiple localized GGOs having multiple small cysts were varied, including a large air space in the center of the localized GGO with surrounding small cysts, a solid part in the center of the localized GGO with peripheral small cysts, and clustered small cysts. These findings were considered to simulate the appearance of an "alloy wheel." Some of the central large air spaces had thickened walls. On the basis of the histopathologic findings, the pathogenesis of multiple cyst formation was considered to be a combination of 2 main mechanisms as follows: a check valve mechanism due to stenosis or an obstruction by the tumor cells\u27 infiltration along the bronchioles, traction bronchiolectasis and ectatic alveoli by fibrosis
Hyperglycemia in non-obese patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with low muscle mass: The Multicenter Study for Clarifying Evidence for Sarcopenia in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus
AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Hyperglycemia is a risk factor for sarcopenia when comparing individuals with and without diabetes. However, no studies have investigated whether the findings could be extrapolated to patients with diabetes with relatively higher glycemic levels. Here, we aimed to clarify whether glycemic control was associated with sarcopenia in patients with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study participants consisted of patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 746, the average age was 69.9 years) and an older general population (n = 2, 067, the average age was 68.2 years). Sarcopenia was defined as weak grip strength or slow usual gait speed and low skeletal mass index. RESULTS: Among patients with type 2 diabetes, 52 were diagnosed as having sarcopenia. The frequency of sarcopenia increased linearly with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, particularly in lean individuals (HbA1c <6.5%, 7.0%, ≥6.5% and <7.0%: 18.5%; HbA1c ≥7.0% and <8.0%: 20.3%; HbA1c ≥8.0%: 26.7%). The linear association was independent of major covariates, including anthropometric factors and duration of diabetes (HbA1c <6.5%: reference; ≥6.5% and <7.0%: odds ratio [OR] 4.38, P = 0.030; HbA1c ≥7.0% and <8.0%: 4.29, P = 0.024; HbA1c ≥8.0%: 7.82, P = 0.003). HbA1c level was specifically associated with low skeletal mass index (HbA1c ≥8.0%: OR 5.42, P < 0.001) rather than weak grip strength (OR 1.89, P = 0.058) or slow gait speed (OR 1.13, P = 0.672). No significant association was observed in the general population with a better glycemic profile. CONCLUSIONS: Poor glycemic control in patients with diabetes was associated with low muscle mass
免疫組織化学法を用いた一側内耳破壊ラットの前庭代償の新しい評価法の開発
Background: Unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) causes the disappearance of ipsilateral medial vestibular nuclear (ipsi-MVe) activity and induces spontaneous nystagmus (SN), which disappears during the initial process of vestibular compensation (VC). Ipsi-MVe-activity restores in the late process of VC.
Objective: We evaluated the late process of VC after UL in rats and examined the effects of thioperamide (H3 antagonist) on VC.
Materials and methods: MK801 (NMDA antagonist)-induced Fos-like immunoreactive (-LIR) neurons in contra-MVe, which had been suppressed by NMDA-mediated cerebellar inhibition in UL-rats was used as an index.
Results: The number of MK801-induced Fos-LIR neurons in contra-MVe gradually decreased to the same level as that of sham-operated rats 14 days after UL. Thioperamide moved the disappearance of the MK801-induced Fos-LIR neurons 2 days earlier. The number of MK801-induced Fos-LIR neurons in thioperamide-treated rats was significantly decreased, compared with that of vehicle-rats on days 7 and 12 after UL. But, thioperamide did not influence the decline of SN frequency in UL-rats.
Conclusion: There findings suggested that the number of MK801-induced Fos-LIR neurons in contra-MVe was decreased in concordance with the restoration of ipsi-MVe-activity during the late process of VC after UL and that thioperamide accelerated the late, but not the initial process of VC
System evaluation of automated production and inhalation of O-15-labeled gaseous radiopharmaceuticals for the rapid O-15-oxygen PET examinations
Background(15)O-oxygen inhalation PET is unique in its ability to provide fundamental information regarding cerebral hemodynamics and energy metabolism in man. However, the use of O-15-oxygen has been limited in a clinical environment largely attributed to logistical complexity, in relation to a long study period, and the need to produce and inhale three sets of radiopharmaceuticals. Despite the recent works that enabled shortening of the PET examination period, radiopharmaceutical production has still been a limiting factor. This study was aimed to evaluate a recently developed radiosynthesis/inhalation system that automatically supplies a series of O-15-labeled gaseous radiopharmaceuticals of (CO)-O-15, O-15(2), and (CO2)-O-15 at short intervals.MethodsThe system consists of a radiosynthesizer which produces (CO)-O-15, O-15(2), and (CO2)-O-15; an inhalation controller; and an inhalation/scavenging unit. All three parts are controlled by a common sequencer, enabling automated production and inhalation at intervals less than 4.5min. The gas inhalation/scavenging unit controls to sequentially supply of qualified radiopharmaceuticals at given radioactivity for given periods at given intervals. The unit also scavenges effectively the non-inhaled radioactive gases. Performance and reproducibility are evaluated.ResultsUsing an O-15-dedicated cyclotron with deuteron of 3.5MeV at 40A, (CO)-O-15, O-15(2), and (CO2)-O-15 were sequentially produced at a constant rate of 1400, 2400, and 2000MBq/min, respectively. Each of radiopharmaceuticals were stably inhaled at </p
Using assessment of higher brain functions of children with GJB2-associated deafness and cochlear implants as a procedure to evaluate language development
Objective: While investigators have reported that patients with GJB2-associated deafness and cochlear implants have preferable language development, the mechanisms of this phenomenon remains unknown. The goat of the present study was to assess higher brain functions of patients with GJB2-retated and GJB2-unrelated deafness as a method of evaluating language development.
Methods: Eight children with cochlear implants were subjected to genetic testing for GJB2 and underwent the Raven colored progressive matrices test, Rey's auditory verbal learning test, Rey's complex figure test, the standardized Language test for aphasia, the picture vocabulary test, and the standardized comprehension test for abstract words.
Results:Three children were diagnosed with GJB2-related deafness, and five children were diagnosed with GJB2-unrelated deafness. All three GJB2-related cases demonstrated normal range higher brain functions and fair language development. By contrast, one GJB2-unrelated case showed a semantic disorder, another demonstrated a visual cognitive disorder with dyslexia, and another had attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.
Conclusions:Children with GJB2-unrelated deafness showed a high frequency of heterogeneous disorders that can affect proper language development. This difference between children with GJB2-retated and GJB2-unrelated deafness may account for the improved language development in children with GJB2-related deafness and cochlear implants. Further, genetic diagnosis of the non-syndromic hearing toss represents a useful tool for the preoperative prediction of outcomes following a cochlear implant procedure.</p
Spontaneous hyaline cartilage regeneration can be induced in an osteochondral defect created in the femoral condyle using a novel double-network hydrogel

Abstract

Background

Functional repair of articular osteochondral defects remains a major challenge not only in the field of knee surgery but also in tissue regeneration medicine. The purpose is to clarify whether the spontaneous hyaline cartilage regeneration can be induced in a large osteochondral defect created in the femoral condyle by means of implanting a novel double-network (DN) gel at the bottom of the defect.

Methods

Twenty-five mature rabbits were used in this study. In the bilateral knees of each animal, we created an osteochondral defect having a diameter of 2.4-mm in the medial condyle. Then, in 21 rabbits, we implanted a DN gel plug into a right knee defect so that a vacant space of 1.5-mm depth (in Group I), 2.5-mm depth (in Group II), or 3.5-mm depth (in Group III) was left. In the left knee, we did not apply any treatment to the defect to obtain the control data. All the rabbits were sacrificed at 4 weeks, and the gross and histological evaluations were performed. The remaining 4 rabbits underwent the same treatment as used in Group II, and real-time PCR analysis was performed at 4 weeks.

Results

The defect in Group II was filled with a sufficient volume of the hyaline cartilage tissue rich in proteoglycan and type-2 collagen. The Wayne's gross appearance and histology scores showed that Group II was significantly greater than Group I, III, and Control (p < 0.012). The relative expression level of type-2 collagen, aggrecan, and SOX9 mRNAs was significantly greater in Group II than in the control group (p < 0.023).

Conclusions

This study demonstrated that spontaneous hyaline cartilage regeneration can be induced <it>in vivo </it>in an osteochondral defect created in the femoral condyle by means of implanting the DN gel plug at the bottom of the defect so that an approximately 2-mm deep vacant space was intentionally left in the defect. This fact has prompted us to propose an innovative strategy without cell culture to repair osteochondral lesions in the femoral condyle.</p
