Relativistic SZ temperature scaling relations of groups and clusters derived from the BAHAMAS and MACSIS simulations
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect has long been recognized as a powerful
cosmological probe. Using the BAHAMAS and MACSIS simulations to obtain
simulated galaxy groups and clusters, we compute three temperature
measures and quantify the differences between them. The first measure is
related to the X-ray emission of the cluster, while the second describes the
non-relativistic thermal SZ (tSZ) effect. The third measure determines the
lowest order relativistic correction to the tSZ signal, which is seeing
increased observational relevance. Our procedure allows us to accurately model
the relativistic SZ (rSZ) contribution and we show that a
underestimation of this rSZ cluster temperature is expected when applying
standard X-ray relations. The correction also exhibits significant mass and
redshift evolution, as we demonstrate here. We present the mass dependence of
each temperature measure alongside their profiles and a short analysis of the
temperature dispersion as derived from the aforementioned simulations. We also
discuss a new relation connecting the temperature and Compton- parameter,
which can be directly used for rSZ modelling. Simple fits to the obtained
scaling relations and profiles are provided. These should be useful for future
studies of the rSZ effect and its relevance to cluster cosmology.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Performance of sanitary sewer collection system odour control devices operating in diverse conditions
Controlling odours from sanitary sewer systems is challenging as a result of the expansive nature of these systems. Addition of oxidizing chemicals is often practiced as a mitigation strategy. One alternative is to remove odorous compounds in the gases vented from manholes using adsorptive media. In this study, odour control devices located at manholes were observed to determine the ability of these systems to reduce hydrogen sulphide from vented gases. The odour control devices incorporated pressure regulation to control gas flow out of manhole covers and adsorptive media to remove hydrogen sulphide in the vented gases prior to release. Pressure regulation was accomplished using a variable volume bladder and two pressure relief valves that permitted gas flow when pressures exceeded 1.3 to 2.5 cm water column. The reduction in gas flow vented from manholes was intended to extend the service life of the adsorptive media, as compared with odour control devices that do not incorporate pressure modulation. Devices were deployed at four locations and three adsorptive media were tested. Although measured collection system hydrogen sulphide concentrations varied from zero to over 1,000 ppm, the removal rates observed using odour control devices were typically above 90%. The lower removal rates observed at one of the sites (50.5 ± 36.1%) appeared related to high gas flow rates being emitted at this location. Activated carbon was used in most of the tests, although use of iron media resulted in the highest removal observed: 97.8 ± 3.6%. The expected service life of the adsorptive media contained within the odour control devices is a function of site-specific hydrogen sulphide concentrations and gas flow rates. Efficacy of HIV/STI behavioral interventions for heterosexual African American men in the United States: a meta-analysis
This meta-analysis estimates the overall efficacy of HIV prevention interventions to reduce HIV sexual risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among heterosexual African American men. A comprehensive search of the literature published during 1988–2008 yielded 44 relevant studies. Interventions significantly reduced HIV sexual risk behaviors and STIs. The stratified analysis for HIV sexual risk behaviors indicated that interventions were efficacious for studies specifically targeting African American men and men with incarceration history. In addition, interventions that had provision/referral of medical services, male facilitators, shorter follow-up periods, or emphasized the importance of protecting family and significant others were associated with reductions in HIV sexual risk behaviors. Meta-regression analyses indicated that the most robust intervention component is the provision/referral of medical services. Findings indicate that HIV interventions for heterosexual African American men might be more efficacious if they incorporated a range of health care services rather than HIV/STI-related services alone
Safety and Tolerability of Antiretrovirals during Pregnancy
Combination antiretroviral therapy (CART) dramatically decreases mother-to-child HIV-1 transmission (MTCT), but maternal adverse events are not infrequent. A review of 117 locally followed pregnancies revealed 7 grade ≥3 AEs possibly related to antiretrovirals, including 2 hematologic, 3 hepatic, and 2 obstetric cholestasis cases. A fetal demise was attributed to obstetric cholestasis, but no maternal deaths occurred. The drugs possibly associated with these AE were zidovudine, nelfinavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, and indinavir. AE or intolerability required discontinuation/substitution of nevirapine in 16% of the users, zidovudine in 10%, nelfinavir in 9%, lopinavir/ritonavir in 1%, but epivir and stavudine in none. In conclusion, nevirapine, zidovudine, and nelfinavir had the highest frequency of AE and/or the lowest tolerability during pregnancy. Although nevirapine and nelfinavir are infrequently used in pregnancy at present, zidovudine is included in most MTCT preventative regimens. Our data emphasize the need to revise the treatment recommendations for pregnant women to include safer and better-tolerated drugs
Asymptotics of the mean-field Heisenberg model
We consider the mean-field classical Heisenberg model and obtain detailed
information about the total spin of the system by studying the model on a
complete graph and sending the number of vertices to infinity. In particular,
we obtain Cramer- and Sanov-type large deviations principles for the total spin
and the empirical spin distribution and demonstrate a second-order phase
transition in the Gibbs measures. We also study the asymptotics of the total
spin throughout the phase transition using Stein's method, proving central
limit theorems in the sub- and supercritical phases and a nonnormal limit
theorem at the critical temperature.Comment: 44 page
