The Imaginary North in Finnish Comics on Migration
This article analyses three comics published in Finland that are focused on migration and offer differing insights into the representation of âthe northâ: Pentti Otsamoâs Kahvitauko (2012), Leen van Hulstâs Maitoa ja lunta / Milk and Snow (2011) and Lauri Ahtinenâs Elias (2018). These albums are both representative of the field in general and unique with respect to their treatment of the connections between place and migration. The analysis of the imaginary north is structured around the three tropes of the northern suburb, the northern climate, and the northern natural environment. What is common to them all is a construction of the north as a place without clear limitations and as an amalgamation of various relationships.
A central aspect of what a place is in the globalized world is that it constitutes a meeting place. In Kahvitauko, the drinking of coffee is used to show how ânorthâ and âsouthâ are connected on a global scale. In Elias, the symbols of the north, the snow, and the bear, are tied together with Afghanistan. Maitoa ja lunta / Milk and Snow provides another viewpoint, as it lacks the representation of xenophobia. Read in parallel with the other two comics it not only shows that migrants of different kinds are treated differently, but also highlights how a place such as the north is defined in different terms depending on reasons for migration, race and ethnicity, and privilege in general.
A place is precisely a place for articulation of networks of meanings, experiences, and people. In addition, the three albums are posited in the broader field of Finnish comics on migration. This is carried out with a focus on how the very concrete places in the comics in the field are named and visually anchored
New Nordic Comics - A Question of Promotion
Throughout history, the cultures of the Nordic countries have at certain points been seen through a lense that stresses regional commonality, most recently with terms like âNew Nordic Cookingâ or âNordic Noir.â In this article, we examine the possibility of a common concept of âNew Nordic Comicsâ by analyzing a number of Nordic comics anthologies. We discuss in what way Nordic comics might be said to be new and how they can be considered to be Nordic. We state that the comics in the collections are not identifiable as particularly Nordic based on their themes or the stylistic or visual repertoires. In these respects, Nordic comics are part of a broader transnational comics culture. The comics, however, occasionally bear witness to a Nordic background or heritage, for instance, in the form of words in Finnish or the Scandinavian languages, names of characters or the milieux in the comics. On the whole, Nordicness in comics is variable and diverse, and rather than a phenomenon based on inherent quality or aesthetic commonality, new Nordic comics are a result of promotional strategies, cultural policies, and transnational connections between Nordic actors in the comics field

Multimodaalinen monikielisyys Katja Tukiaisen matkasarjakuvassa Postia Intiasta
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan Katja Tukiaisen vuonna 2002 julkaistua omaelĂ€mĂ€kerrallista ja dokumentaarista matkasarjakuvaa Postia Intiasta. Tukiaisen sarjakuvan kuvaa matkakohteesta ja matkaajan identiteetistĂ€ sekĂ€ nĂ€iden vĂ€lisestĂ€ suhteesta vĂ€rittÀÀ monella tavalla teoksen monikielisyys. Artikkelissa lĂ€hestytÀÀnkin Postia Intiasta -sarjakuvaa teoksen monitahoisen monikielisyyden kautta. Sarjakuvassa kielelliset ilmaukset ja monikielisyys ovat aina osa laajempaa multimodaalista kokonaisuutta, kuvan ja sanan yhdistelmÀÀ. hahmotan Postia Intiasta -sarjakuvan monikielisyyden kolmesta osa-alueesta koostuvaksi. EnsinnĂ€kin sanallisen ja kuvallisen rajapintaan asettuva sanskritinkielinen om-tavu sitoo yhteen koko tarinan. Toiseksi monien kielten vĂ€rittĂ€mĂ€ sarjakuvan dialogi toimii paitsi omaelĂ€mĂ€kerrallisen sarjakuvan autenttisuuden ja kielellisen realismin merkkinĂ€, myös huumorin lĂ€hteenĂ€ ja matkaajan asenteen kuvastajana. Kolmanneksi sarjakuva korostaa diegeettisten tekstien ja teokseen sisĂ€ltyvien ja sitĂ€ rakenteistavien monikielisten karttojen avulla kielellisen moninaisuuden merkitystĂ€ tarinan tapahtumapaikkojen ja intialaisen yhteiskunnan kuvauksissa. Kaiken kaikkiaan on kyse siitĂ€, ettĂ€ sarjakuvan erilaiset tekstiainekset (yhdessĂ€ kuvien kanssa) muodostavat kerronnallisia keinoja, joiden avulla kielellinen moninaisuus hahmottuu matkan tĂ€rkeĂ€ksi dimensioksi ja merkittĂ€vĂ€ksi osaksi protagonistin olemista matkalla ja asennoitumista matkaan. PÀÀhenkilön Intian-matka on varsinainen kielimatka.

Viihteellistetty politiikka: tapaustutkimus 1900-luvun alun suomalaisten sosialistien poliittisesta toiminnasta
Analyysimme perusteella politiikkaa on viihteellistetty jo sata vuotta sitten.
