    Characteristics of sedimentary environments in brackish marsh soils in relation to organic matter properties (Puck Lagoon, Northern Poland)

    The research focused on brackish marsh soils located within the coastal zone of Puck Lagoon (the Beka botanical and ornithological nature reserve). They are characterised by the presence of layers rich with allochthonous organic matter, derived from washing out of peat deposits. The objective of the research was to determine sedimentary environments of the soil organic matter based on selected properties. The obtained results indicated that despite similar morphological characteristics, these soils might have developed in slightly different environmental conditions, determined mostly by the Baltic water levels and morphology of the coast. The organic matter of the studied soils was characterised by relatively low aromaticity, which may indicate the ongoing process of decomposition. The presence of both peat-bog, rush and ruderal plants, as well as trees in the species composition of macroremains proved the heterogeneity of sedimentary environments and confirmed the allochthonous origin of organic matter accumulated in the studied brackish marsh soils

    ICE-SHEET DYNAMICS OF WARTA GLACIATION (SAALE) IN THE MARGINAL ZONE OF KNYSZEWICZE AREA, NORTHEASTERN POLAND

    The paper presents a research on a marginal zone near Knyszewicze in the southern part of Sok贸艂ka Hills (northeastern Poland). Terminal moraine hills arearranged amphitheatrically in a lobal pattern. Dynamics of the Knyszewicze frontal ice-sheet lobe during the Saale Glaciation and successive stages of the marginal zone near the village of Knyszewicze were reconstructed based on sedimentary and geomorphological analysis, using a digital elevation model and morpholineaments. Three main phases of the Knyszewicze glacial-lobe activity were identified including accumulation of glaciofluvial deposits, advances of the ice margin and ice-lobe retreat. Moraine hills developed at a stable ice-lobe terminus, initially as short end-moraine fans with the fol low ing se quence of lithofacies Gh-SGh-Sh or Gm-Gh-Sh. Such a sequence indicates cyclic sheet-floods. During a small but dynamic advance of the ice sheet terminus, these depos its were moved for ward and monoclinally folded, then furrowed with sloping faults due to horizontal pressure. Typ i cal thrust-block push moraines developed in this way. Ice sheet advance took place when permafrost was present in the substratum and very high water pressure occurred at glacial terminus. Inside a lobal configuration of moraines, there is a rich inventory of glacial forms with a classic terminal depression in the central part. Based on this landform pattern, their shape, rhythm and glaciotectonic disturbances, the land relief may be referred to as a hill-hole pair. The structure of Horczaki Knoll, deposited on the sub-Quaternary tectonic structure, significantly contributed to a development of this marginal zone

    W artykule przedstawiono wyniki interdyscyplinarnych bada艅 przeprowadzonych w obr臋bie bezodp艂ywowego zag艂臋bienia wytopiskowego. Badane zag艂臋bienie wytopiskowe znajduje si臋 w m艂odoglacjalnym obszarze wysoczyznowym Polski p贸艂nocnej (Pojezierze Brodnickie) w Brodnickim Parku Krajobrazowym. W celu zrekonstruowania faz ewolucji zag艂臋bienia, z jego dna pobrano rdze艅 osad贸w biogenicznych o mi膮偶szo艣ci 6,72 m. Analizy geochemiczne, palinologiczne i makroszcz膮tk贸w ro艣linnych umo偶liwi艂y wyodr臋bnienie szeregu etap贸w rozwoju 鈥搊d p贸藕noglacjalnego jeziora po wsp贸艂czesne torfowisko. W obr臋bie zlewni topograficznej zag艂臋bienia wyst臋puj膮 r贸偶ne formy u偶ytkowania: las gospodarczy, pole orne i od艂贸g. Na podstawie szczeg贸艂owych bada艅 gleboznawczych i geomorfologicznych stwierdzono wyst臋powanie silnych proces贸w stokowych w odlesionej cz臋艣ci zlewni. Wa偶nym aspektem przeprowadzonych bada艅 by艂a analiza przestrzenna zmian wybranych parametr贸w 艣rodowiska przyrodniczego z zastosowaniem GIS. Wdro偶enie Systemu Informacji Geograficznej by艂o niezb臋dne ze wzgl臋du na szeroki zakres i interdyscyplinarny charakter bada艅. Budowa specjalistycznej bazy danych przebiega艂a w kilku etapach: (I) budowa georeferencyjnej bazy danych obszaru bada艅; (II) wst臋pna analiza poszczeg贸lnych element贸w 艣rodowiska; (III) wprowadzenie danych pochodz膮cych z bada艅 terenowych; (IV) analiza danych terenowych / wprowadzanie wynik贸w bada艅 laboratoryjnych; (V) kompleksowa analiza danych/prezentacja i wizualizacja wynik贸w. Zastosowanie GIS usprawni艂o i przyspieszy艂o prace nad rekonstrukcj膮 i wizualizacj膮 zmian 艣rodowiska przyrodniczego badanego obszaru.Detailed multidisciplinary studies were carried out within the small kettle hole in young glacial landscape of north Poland (the Brodnica Lake District). Topographic catchment of investigated kattle-hole is used as a forest, fallow and arable field. The bottom part of depression was filled with organic deposits with a total thickness of 6.72 m. Detailed analysis enabled to identify several stages in the development of the depression from Late Glacial lake to contemporary peat bog. In deforested part of the catchment were recorded strong slope processes. An important aspect of the study was spatial analysis of changes in selected environmental parameters using Geographic Information Systems. Implementation of GIS was necessary because of the wide range of interdisciplinary research. The database was created in several stages: (I) construction of geo-referenced research area database; (II) preliminary analysis of the individual elements of the environment; (III) input the field data; (IV) analysis of field data / input the laboratory data; (V) complex analysis of the data / presentation and visualization of results.
