Seismic Response of Axially Loaded Pile Group
This paper presents a numerically efficient procedure for evaluating seismic responses of an axially loaded pile group. This procedure was used to clarify the impact on pile-group responses of employing different levels of soil-pile compatibility conditions. This study clearly demonstrated that the limitations and shortcomings of adapting relaxed soil-pile compatibility conditions are not negligible for pile groups with relatively small spacing ratios and with soil stiffnesses constant or decreasing with depth
Numerical and Experimental Simulation of Seismic Site Responses
Prediction of seismic site responses has been one of the most important tasks in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Since Kanai used the multiple wave reflection theory to compute horizontal ground movements against seismic shaking, a number of researchers have extended the basic concept proposed by Kanai. Performance of seismic site response methods, however, has always invited open questions for problems involving extreme seismic shaking and large deformation of soils due, for example, to liquefaction and lateral spreading. A new numerical method SRANG3D (Site Response Analysis of Non-linear Ground in 3 Dimensions) has been developed to improve our prediction capabilities for seismic site responses. SRANG3D computes seismic site responses that involve vertical propagation of two horizontally polarized S waves and one P wave. The most distinct feature of SRANG3D is that the stress-strain relationships of soil can be represented by a combination of various elasto-plastic constitutive soil models and discrete element models. This paper introduces the new site-response analysis method SRANG3D and the paper highlights results obtained from this new method. Our study demonstrated that SRANG3D yields improved predictions of the large-scale experimental data than currently available site-response analysis methods
Dental Implant Treatment for a Patient with Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate
Dental reconstruction in the cleft space is difficult in some patients with cleft lip and palate because of
oronasal fistulas. Most of these patients receive a particle cancellous bone marrow (PCBM) graft to close the alveolar cleft, and secondary bone grafting is also required. Treatment options for the alveolar cleft including fixed or removable prostheses require the preparation of healthy teeth and are associated with functional or social difficulties. Recently, the effectiveness of dental implant treatment for cleft lip and palate patients has been reported. However, there have been few reports on the use of this treatment in bilateral cleft lip and palate patients. We report the case of a patient who had bilateral cleft lip and palate and was missing both lateral incisors. She received dental implant treatment after a PCBM graft and ramus bone onlay grafting (RBOG). A 34-month postoperative course was uneventful.</p
Since 2002,educational innovation has started through FD programs at the University of Tokushima.
Until now various university-wide FD programs have been developed and conducted. The FD facilitator
training program has been carried out to develop teachers who are responsible for FD in their respective
departments. The Aim is to build up FD organizations in each department. Depaetment FD organizations have been incorporaled substantlally since 2008.
We see elaborated collaboration between the
university-wide FD organization and the departmenta FD organizations. The roles of the FD facilitator of each
department as the core member to promote their departmental FD are becoming more important. To keep
practicing substantial FD,they need to be conscious of their identity as the FD facilitator. They need to be
actively involved in facilitating FD programs for their departments while maintaining a sense of ownership as
an authentic member of the department. The aim of this paper is to discuss the importance of the FD
facilitator program based on the results of the questionnaire survey conducted at the beginning and the end
of FD facilitator training. To evaluate this program,we pay close attention to whether the participants are able
to acquire FD skills and knowledge which are considered necessary. Futhermore focus on whether they
demonstrated any attitudinal change in their motivation and confidence as FD facilitators
Development and Performance of Kyoto's X-ray Astronomical SOI pixel (SOIPIX) sensor
We have been developing monolithic active pixel sensors, known as Kyoto's
X-ray SOIPIXs, based on the CMOS SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technology for
next-generation X-ray astronomy satellites. The event trigger output function
implemented in each pixel offers microsecond time resolution and enables
reduction of the non-X-ray background that dominates the high X-ray energy band
above 5--10 keV. A fully depleted SOI with a thick depletion layer and back
illumination offers wide band coverage of 0.3--40 keV. Here, we report recent
progress in the X-ray SOIPIX development. In this study, we achieved an energy
resolution of 300~eV (FWHM) at 6~keV and a read-out noise of 33~e- (rms) in the
frame readout mode, which allows us to clearly resolve Mn-K and
K. Moreover, we produced a fully depleted layer with a thickness of
. The event-driven readout mode has already been successfully
demonstrated.Comment: 7pages, 12figures, SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation
