    Results from the spin programme at COSY-ANKE

    Get PDF
    Some of the important results from the COSY-Juelich spin programme are summarised. These include the measurement of the deuteron beam momentum through the excitation of a depolarising resonance, which allowed the mass of the eta-meson to be determined to high precision. The charge exchange of polarised deuterons on hydrogen gave rise to a detailed study of the spin dependence of large angle neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes. The measurements of the cross section and analysing powers for pion production in both pp and pn collisions at 353 MeV could be described very successfully in terms of a partial wave decomposition

    The pd3HΛK+pd\to ^3H_\Lambda K^+ reaction cross section

    Full text link
    The one- and two-step mechanisms of the pd3HΛK+pd\to ^3H_\Lambda K^+ reaction in the range of incident proton kinetic energy 1.13-3.0 GeV have been investigated. A remarkable peculiarity of the two-step mechanism which incorporates subprocesses ppdπ+pp\to d\pi ^+ and π+nK+Λ\pi^+n\to K^+\Lambda is the so called velocity matching providing the presence of all intermediate particles nearly to the on-mass-shell. The differential cross section has been calculated using a realistic model for the hypertritium 3HΛ^3H_\Lambda wave function. The maximum value of the cross section is estimated as \sim 1nb/sr. The contribution of the one-step mechanism with the elementary process pNNKΛpN\to NK\Lambda into the cross section has been found to be two - three orders of magnitude smaller in comparison with the two-step mechanism.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 3 Postscript figure

    Production of the 1S0 diproton in the pp -> pp pi0 reaction at 0.8 GeV

    Get PDF
    The pp -> pp pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for pion cms angles between 0 and 15.4 degrees at a proton beam energy of 0.8 GeV. The selection of diproton pairs with an excitation energy E_{pp} < 3 MeV ensures that the final pp system is dominantly in the spin-singlet 1S0 state. The kinematics are therefore very similar to those of pp -> d pi+ but with different spin and isospin transitions. The results will thus provide a crucial extra test of pion production models in nucleon-nucleon collisions. The cross sections, which are over two orders of magnitude smaller than those of pp -> d pi+, show a forward dip, even stronger than that seen at lower energies. This behaviour is well reproduced in a theoretical model that includes P-wave Delta-N states.Comment: 10 pages, 5 eps figures, prepared using elsart.cl

    A Method to Polarize Stored Antiprotons to a High Degree

    Get PDF
    Polarized antiprotons can be produced in a storage ring by spin--dependent interaction in a purely electron--polarized hydrogen gas target. The polarizing process is based on spin transfer from the polarized electrons of the target atoms to the orbiting antiprotons. After spin filtering for about two beam lifetimes at energies T40170T\approx 40-170 MeV using a dedicated large acceptance ring, the antiproton beam polarization would reach P=0.20.4P=0.2-0.4. Polarized antiprotons would open new and unique research opportunities for spin--physics experiments in pˉp\bar{p}p interactions

    Measurement of the isospin-filtering dd -> 4He K+ K- reaction at Q=39 MeV

    Get PDF
    The total cross section for the dd -> 4He K+ K- reaction has been measured at a beam momentum of 3.7 GeV/c, corresponding to an excess energy of 39 MeV, which is the maximum possible at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-J\"{u}lich. A deuterium cluster-jet target and the ANKE forward magnetic spectrometer, placed inside the storage ring, have been employed in this investigation. We find a total cross section of sigma(tot) < 14 pb, which brings into question the viability of investigating the dd -> 4He a0(980) reaction as a means of studying isospin violation.Comment: Five pages with three eps figure

    Observation of inverse diproton photodisintegration at intermediate energies

    Get PDF
    The reaction pp->{pp}_s\gamma, where {pp}_s is a proton pair with an excitation energy E_{pp}<3 MeV, has been observed with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for proton beam energies of T_p=0.353, 0.500, and 0.550 GeV. This is equivalent to photodisintegration of a free 1S_0 diproton for photon energies E\gamma ~ T_p/2. The differential cross sections measured for c.m. angles 0 deg.<\theta_{pp}<20 deg. exhibit a steep increase with angle that is compatible with E1 and E2 multipole contributions. The ratio of the measured cross sections to those of np->d\gamma is on the 10^{-3}-10^{-2} level. The increase of the pp->{pp}_s\gamma cross section with T_p might reflect the influence of the Delta(1232) excitation.Comment: 4 pages + 4 figure
