    Who wants a slimmer body? The relationship between body weight status, education level and body shape dissatisfaction among young adults in Hong Kong

    Background: Body shape dissatisfaction has been thought to have an indispensable impact on weight control behaviors. We investigated the prevalence of body shape dissatisfaction (BSD) and explored its association with weight status, education level and other determinants among young adults in Hong Kong. Methods. Information on anthropometry, BSD, and socio-demographics was collected from a random sample of 1205 young adults (611 men and 594 women) aged 18-27 in a community-based household survey. BSD was defined as a discrepancy between current and ideal body shape based on a figure rating scale. Cross-tabulations, homogeneity tests and logistic regression models were applied. Results: The percentages of underweight men and women were 16.5% and 34.9% respectively, and the corresponding percentages of being overweight or obese were 26.7% and 13.2% for men and women respectively. Three-quarters of young adults had BSD. Among women, 30.9% of those underweight and 75.5% of those with normal weight desired a slimmer body shape. Overweight men and underweight women with lower education level were more likely to have a mismatch between weight status and BSD than those with higher education level. After controlling for other determinants, underweight women were found to have a higher likelihood to maintain their current body shapes than other women. Men were found to be less likely to have a mismatch between weight status and BSD than women. Conclusions: Overweight and obesity in men and underweight in women were prevalent among Hong Kong young adults. Inappropriate body shape desire might predispose individuals to unhealthy weight loss or gain behaviors. Careful consideration of actual weight status in body shape desire is needed in health promotion and education, especially for underweight and normal weight women and those with a low education level. © 2011 Cheung et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.published_or_final_versio

    Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness, Carotid Plaque and Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke in Chinese

    Background: Our aim was to prospectively investigate the association between carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) as well as carotid plaque and incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in Chinese, among whom data are limited. Methods and Findings: We conducted a community-based cohort study composed of 2190 participants free of cardiovascular disease at baseline in one community. During a median 10.5-year follow up, we documented 68 new cases of coronary heart disease and 94 cases of stroke. The multivariate relative risks (RRs) associated with a change of 1 standard deviation of maximal common carotid IMT were 1.38 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12–1.70) for CHD and 1.47 (95% CI, 1.28–1.69) for stroke. The corresponding RRs with internal carotid IMT were 1.47 (95% CI, 1.21–1.79) for CHD and 1.52 (95% CI, 1.31–1.76) for stroke. Carotid plaque measured by the degree of diameter stenosis was also significantly associated with increased risk of CHD (p for trend<0.0001) and stroke (p for trend<0.0001). However, these associations were largely attenuated when adjusting for IMT measurements. Conclusions: This prospective study indicates a significant association between carotid IMT and incidence of CHD and stroke in Chinese adults. These measurements may be useful for cardiovascular risk assessment and stratification in Chinese

    Molecular Modeling and Simulation: Force Field Development, Evaporation Processes and Thermophysical Properties of Mixtures

    To gain physical insight into the behavior of fluids on a microscopic level as well as to broaden the data base for thermophysical properties especially for mixtures, molecular modeling and simulation is utilized in this work. Various methods and applications are discussed, including a procedure for the development of new force field models. The evaporation of liquid nitrogen into a supercritical hydrogen atmosphere is presented as an example for large scale molecular dynamics simulation. System-size dependence and scaling behavior are discussed in the context of Kirkwood-Buff integration. Further, results for thermophysical mixture properties are presented, i.e. the Henry’s law constant of aqueous systems and diffusion coefficients of a ternary mixture

    Severe Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type VI) is usually fatal by early adulthood. Bone marrow transplantation is the only form of definitive enzyme replacement therapy available. A 5-year-old boy with Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome has successful recovery of bone marrow and enzymatic functions after umbilical cord blood transplant from his unaffected HLA-identical brother. Busulphan (16 mg/kg) and cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg) were used as preparative chemotherapy with short methotrexate and long cyclosporin as prophylaxis against graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). A total of 6.08 x 10 7/kg nucleated cells and 2.92 x 10 5/kg CD34 + cells were transplanted with neutrophil engraftment achieved on day 26. There was no evidence of acute and chronic GVHD. Fifteen months after transplant, a normal level of N-acetylgalactosamine-4-sulphatase activity was achieved despite mixed chimerism. There was clinical improvement of hepatosplenomegaly, facial and skin features, joint mobility and resolution of suppurative middle ear effusion. He returned to school and continued to perform well in academic studies. We report here the first successful umbilical cord blood transplant as treatment of Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Children and adolescents with haemophilia in Hong Kong: An epidemiological and clinical review

    A survey was performed in late-2003 by questionnaire to all paediatric and adolescent departments under the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong to study the epidemiology and clinical status of local haemophilia patients under 19 years of age. A total of 90 patients were recruited, corresponding to a local prevalence of 6.4 per 100,000. Among these 90 patients, 83.3% were haemophilia A and 16.7% were haemophilia B cases. Maternal carrier status was uncertain in 44.6% of patients and genotypic assessment was not performed in most of these cases. None had received primary prophylaxis although 42.9% of them were severe haemophiliacs and 46.4% had already suffered from chronic arthropathy. Inhibitors were detected only in 8.1% of patients. None was infected with human immunodeficiency virus but hepatitis C antibody was detected in 12 and hepatitis B surface antigen was positive in two patients. All but one of the infected patients were older than 13 years with only one patient suffering from chronic hepatitis. Twelve patients had history of intra-cranial haemorrhage. While infective complications were uncommon in our young haemophilia patients, improvement in carrier detection, prevention and treatment of haemophilic arthropathy should be considered in the future development of local haemophilia care.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
