Change in Long-Spacing Collagen in Descemet's Membrane of Diabetic Goto-Kakizaki Rats and Its Suppression by Antidiabetic Agents
We examined changes in the ultrastructure and localization of major extracellular matrix components, including 5 types of collagen (type I, III, IV, VI, and VIII), laminin, fibronectin, and heparan sulfate proteoglycan in Descemet's membrane of the cornea of diabetic GK rats. In the cornea of diabetic GK rats, more long-spacing collagen fibrils were observed in Descemet's membrane than in the membrane of the nondiabetic Wistar rats. Both GK and Wistar rats showed an age-dependent increase in the density of the long-spacing collagen. Immunoelectron microscopy showed that type VIII collagen was localized in the internodal region of the long-spacing collagen, which was not labelled by any of the other antibodies used. The antidiabetic agents nateglinide and glibenclamide significantly suppressed the formation of the long-spacing collagen in the diabetic rats. Long-spacing collagen would thus be a useful indicator for studying diabetic changes in the cornea and the effect of antidiabetic agents

Abstract We carried out time-series observations of 210 Po and 210 Pb radioactivity in the western North Pacific Ocean. The sinking fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) in the mesopelagic zone were estimated from 210 Po radioactivity during several seasons in the subarctic and subtropical regions of the western North Pacific. The seasonal changes of POC fluxes at a depth of 400 m were larger in the subarctic region than in the subtropical region. The annual mean POC flux at a depth of 400 m was larger in the subarctic region (57 mgC m -2 day -1 ) than in the subtropical region (36 mgC m -2 day -1 ). The annual mean of the e-ratio (the ratio of POC flux to primary productivity) in the subarctic region (18 %) was about twice the e-ratio in the subtropical region (10 %). These results imply that the efficiency of the biological pump is larger in the subarctic region than in the subtropical region of the western North Pacific
A right colonic volvulus requiring extensive colectomy in an infant with trisomy 13
AbstractColonic volvulus is a rare surgical emergency condition in children. Only approximately 40 children with cecal volvulus have been reported in English literature in the past 50 years. Among these, a right colonic volvulus involving the long segment from the ileal end to the transverse colon, as in our case, is limited to a few reports. Neurodevelopmental delay and a history of chronic constipation have been reported as common associated disorders. This is the first report about a case of right colonic volvulus in an infant with trisomy 13 who required extensive colectomy during an emergency laparotomy
Mesopelagic particulate nitrogen dynamics in the subarctic and subtropical regions of the western North Pacific
Recently, new spatiotemporal-scale particle observations by autonomous profiling floats equipped with bio-optical sensors have revealed that, in addition to gravitational particle sinking, the downward transport of surface particles by physical mixing events, which has been overlooked, contributes to particulate organic carbon export. However, the subsequent behavior of these exported particles in the mesopelagic zone (e.g., particle fragmentation and degradation) remains unclear, although it may influence the efficiency of carbon transport to further depths. This study successfully depicted the new annual mean mesopelagic particulate nitrogen (PN) dynamics with multi-layer, steady-state suspended PN pools by reanalyzing seasonal data on the stable nitrogen isotopic compositions of both suspended and sinking particles, each with different profiles, from subarctic station K2 and subtropical station S1 in the North Pacific, which are both CO2 sinks but in different oceanic settings. As analytical conditions, we assumed that the net loss of sinking PN was entirely due to abiotic fragmentation of particle aggregates to non-sinking particles and that the apparent 15N enrichment associated with heterotrophic degradation in the suspended PN pools was vertically constant. The 15N mass balance for the PN supply to the uppermost mesopelagic pool, derived from such constraints, allowed estimating the PN export by the mixed-layer pump, which was 1.6 times greater at K2 than at S1. However, its contribution to the total export (including gravitational PN sinking) from the surface layer was approximately 20% at both stations. Moreover, the ratio of PN supplied to the uppermost pool by the mixed-layer pump and by the fragmentation of particle aggregates was also similar at both stations, approximately 1:1. Using these ratios, together with separate observations of the mixed-layer pump-driven flux, it may be possible to estimate the efficiency of the particulate organic carbon transport due to the biological gravitational pump responsible for carbon sequestration in the deep sea
Evaluation of the difference-correction effect of the gamma camera systems used by easy Z-score Imaging System (eZIS) analysis
Objective: We examined the difference of the effect by data to revise a gamma camera difference. The difference-correction method of the camera is incorporated in eZIS analysis. Methods: We acquired single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) data from the three-dimensional (3D) Hoffman brain phantom (Hoffman), the three-dimensional brain phantom (3D-Brain), Pool phantom (pool) and from normal subjects (Normal-SPECT) to investigate compensating for a difference in gamma camera systems. We compared SPECT counts of standard camera with the SPECT counts that revised the difference of the gamma camera system (camera). Furthermore, we compared the "Z-score map (Z-score)". To verify the effect of the compensation, we examined digitally simulated data designed to represent a patient with Alzheimer\u27s dementia. We carried out both eZIS analysis and "Specific Volume of interest Analysis (SVA)". Results: There was no great difference between the correction effect using Hoffman phantom data and that using 3D-Brain phantom data. Furthermore, a good compensation effect was obtained only over a limited area. The compensation based on the pool was found to be less satisfactory than any of the other compensations according to all results of the measurements examined in the study. The compensation based on the Normal-SPECT data resulted in a Z-score map (Z-score) for the result that approximated that from the standard camera. Therefore, we concluded that the effect of the compensation based on Normal-SPECT data was the best of the four methods tested. Conclusions: Based on eZIS analysis, the compensation using the pool data was inferior to the compensations using the other methods tested. Based on the results of the SAV analysis, the effect of the compensation using the Hoffman data was better than the effect of the compensation using the 3D-Brain data. By all end-point measures, the compensation based on the Normal-SPECT data was more accurate than the compensation based on any of the other three phantoms. © 2014 The Author(s).発行後1年より全文公
