Synthesis of Benzoxazoles Containing Allyl Crosslinking Sites via Claisen Rearrangements
The reaction of diethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate with allyl bromide/K2CO3 in DMF followed by hydrolysis provided 2,5-di(allyloxy)terephthalic acid. The conversion of 2,5-di (allyloxy)terephthalic acid to 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5-di(allyloxy)benzene in PPSE was unsuccessful. However, the reaction of 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- dihydroxybenzene with allyl bromide/K2CO3 provided 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- di(allyloxy)benzene. DSC analysis indicated that 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- di(allyloxy)benzene undergoes a Claisen rearrangement to the corresponding diallyl product. The synthesis of 2-allyloxy-1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)benzene was carried out using 2-hydroxy-1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)benzene as starting material. DSC analysis was inconclusive with respect to a Claisen rearrangement. The reaction of 2-allyloxybenzoic acid with 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane in PPSE was unsuccessful but the reaction of 2,2-bis(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-benzoxazolyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane with allyl bromide/K2CO3 in DMF provided 2,2-bis(2-(2- allyloxyphenyl)-5-benzoxazolyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane. DSC analysis of 2,2- bis(2-(2-allyloxyphenyl)-5-benzoxazolyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane was inconclusive as to the presence of a Claisen rearrangement
Non-local dispersal
We consider a model of spatial spread that has applications in both material science and biology. The classical models are based upon partial differential equations, in particular reaction-diffusion equations. Here the dispersal term is given in terms of an integral operator and we restrict ourselves to the scalar case
Monkeypox Virus Infections in Small Animal Models for Evaluation of Anti-Poxvirus Agents
An ideal animal model for the study of a human disease is one which utilizes a route of infection that mimics the natural transmission of the pathogen; the ability to obtain disease with an infectious dose equivalent to that causing disease in humans; as well having a disease course, morbidity and mortality similar to that seen with human disease. Additionally, the animal model should have a mode(s) of transmission that mimics human cases. The development of small animal models for the study of monkeypox virus (MPXV) has been quite extensive for the relatively short period of time this pathogen has been known, although only a few of these models have been used to study anti-poxvirus agents. We will review those MPXV small animal models that have been developed thus far for the study of therapeutic agents
Intestinal neuromuscular function after preservation and transplantation
While it is well known that prolonged preservation of the intestinal graft causes severe mucosal damage after transplantation, little is known about the effect on neuromuscular function. The entire small intestine of adult hound dogs was flushed and preserved with cold lactated Ringer's solution and autotransplanted either immediately (n = 6) or after 24 hr (n = 6). Animals undergoing sham operation (n = 4) were used as a control. Fasting motility and the response of the intestinal smooth muscle and enteric nerves to bethanechol (100 μg/kg/0.5 hr, iv) and cisapride (0.5 mg/kg, iv) were determined by a multiple strain gauge method on Postoperative Days 2, 4, 7, 14, 21, and 28. Compared to the control, immediately transplanted grafts and those preserved for 24 hr developed delayed reappearance of migrating myoelectric complexes (MMC), hypercontractile activity, and reduced response to bethanechol and cisapride administration. Animals in the preservation group developed more abnormal fasting motility after transplantation, but responses to bethanechol and cisapride stimulation were not markedly different from those of the immediate group. The reappearance of MMC occurred 3 weeks postoperatively in the preservation group compared to 2 days in the immediate group. The results of our study indicate that intestinal dysmotility is augmented in prolonged-preservation grafts compared to those with brief preservation. The dysmotility was transient and normalized 3 to 4 weeks after surgery. Preservation and reperfusion injury to the neuromuscular system of intestinal grafts are reversible and are attenuated by simple hypothermia
Reducing the Effects of Unequal Number of Games on Rankings
Ranking is an important mathematical process in a variety of contexts such as information retrieval, sports and business. Sports ranking methods can be applied both in and beyond the context of athletics. In both settings, once the concept of a game has been defined, teams (or individuals) accumulate wins, losses, and ties, which are then factored into the ranking computation. Many settings involve an unequal number of games between competitors. This paper demonstrates how to adapt two sports rankings methods, the Colley and Massey ranking methods, to settings where an unequal number of games are played between the teams. In such settings, the standard derivations of the methods can produce nonsensical rankings. This paper introduces the idea of including a super-user into the rankings and considers the effect of this fictitious player on the ratings. We apply such techniques to rank batters and pitchers in Major League baseball, professional tennis players, and participants in a free online social game. The ideas introduced in this paper can further the scope that such methods are applied and the depth of insight they offer
Potential energy surfaces and bound states for the open-shell van der Waals cluster Br–HF
Semiempiricalpotential energy surfaces for the lowest three electronic states of the open-shell complex Br–HF are constructed, based on existing empirical potentials for Kr–HF and Kr–Ne and coupled-clusterelectronic structure calculations for Br–Ne. Coupled cluster calculations are also described for He–F, Ne–F and Ar–F. Electrostaticinteractions that arise from the quadrupole of the Br atom and the permanent multipoles of HF are also included in the Br–HF surfaces. The well depth of the lowest adiabatic surface is found to be 670 cm−1 at a linear equilibrium geometry. The results of helicity decoupled and full close-coupling calculations of the bound states of the complex are also described. The ground state, with total angular momentum projection quantum number |P|=3/2, is found 435 cm−1 below dissociation to Br (2P3/2)+HF (j=0). The lowest-frequency intermolecular bending and stretching vibrations are predicted around 145 and 211 cm−1, respectively. Parity splittings are found to be extremely small for bound states with projection quantum number |P|=3/2. The relevance of the results to recently recorded spectra of Br–HF is discussed
Atomic clock measurements of quantum scattering phase shifts spanning Feshbach resonances at ultralow fields
We use an atomic fountain clock to measure quantum scattering phase shifts precisely through a series of narrow, low-field Feshbach resonances at average collision energies below 1  μK. Our low spread in collision energy yields phase variations of order ±π/2 for target atoms in several F, mF states. We compare them to a theoretical model and establish the accuracy of the measurements and the theoretical uncertainties from the fitted potential. We find overall excellent agreement, with small statistically significant differences that remain unexplained
Optimal SVM Switching for a Multilevel Multi-Phase Machine using Modified Discrete PSO
This paper searches for the best possible switching sequence in a multilevel multi-phase inverter that gives the lowest amount of voltage harmonics. A modified discrete particle swarm (MDPSO) algorithm is used in an attempt to find the optimal space vector modulation switching sequence that results in the lowest voltage THD. As with typical PSO cognitive and social parameters are used to guide the search, but an additional mutation term is added to broaden the amount of area searched. The search space is the feasible solutions for the predetermined vectors at a given modulation index. Comparison of the MDPSO algorithm to an integer particle swarm optimization (IPSO) is presented for all three modulation indices tested. The resulting switching sequences found show that the MDPSO algorithm is capable of finding a minimal THD solution for all modulations indices tested. The MDPSO algorithm performed better overall than the IPSO in terms of converging to the best solution with significantly lower iterations
