    Drag Reduction by Bubble Oscillations

    Drag reduction in stationary turbulent flows by bubbles is sensitive to the dynamics of bubble oscillations. Without this dynamical effect the bubbles only renormalize the fluid density and viscosity, an effect that by itself can only lead to a small percentage of drag reduction. We show in this paper that the dynamics of bubbles and their effect on the compressibility of the mixture can lead to a much higher drag reduction.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Proton beam extraction from the CERN SPS by means of a bent silicon crystal is reported at three different energies, 14 GeV, 120 GeV and 270 GeV. The experimental results are compared to computer simulations which contain a sound model of the SPS accelerator as well as the channeling phenomena in bent crystals. The overall energy dependence of crystal assisted proton beam extraction is understood and provides the basis to discuss such a scheme for future accelerators

    Helicobacter pylori Infection in the Young in Bangladesh: Prevalence, Socioeconomic and Nutritional Aspects

    Background The gastric acid barrier, an important host defence against small bowel infection, may be compromised by infection with Helicobacter pylori. In developing countries, H.pylori infection occurs early in life and prevelance of hypochlorhydria is high particularly in the malnourished, which may predispose a child to repeated gastrointestinal Infection and diarrhoea. Diarrhpea being a leading cause a childhood mortality and morbidity in developing countries, we investigated the prevelance of H. pylori infection in children in poor Bangladeshi community and explored its association with socioeconomic and nutritional status. Methods The study was conducted in a poor periurban community among 469 children aged -99months. Parents were interviewed ising a questionnaire. To detect active infection with H. pyloria13 C-urea broath test was performed and weight was recorded on a beam balance with a sensitivity of 20g. Results In all, 61% of 36 infants aged 1-3 months were positive for H. pylori, this rate dropped steadily with increasing age and was 33% in 10-15 month old children and then rose to 84% in 6-9 year olds. Overall H. pylori infection had no association with nutritional state of the child or family income but the infection rate was 2.5 times higher in children of mothers with no schooling. Conclusions The H. pylori infection rate is very high in early infancy in a poor periurban community of Bangladesh. The reason for a drop in the infection rate infancy is unclear but could be due to initial clearance of the infection by the body's defence mechanisms but with possible alteration of the gastric mucosa which sustains infection. Maternal education may be protective and may operate through some underlined proximate behavioural determinants. The rate of H. pylori infection and young children may predispose them to reapeated gastrointestinal infection and diahorrea

    Influence of hepatitis G virus infection on liver disease

    The influence of hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection on disease activity in hepatitis C related and unrelated liver disease was investigated in 254 individuals using an EIA polymerase chain reaction assay for HGV. One hundred patients had chronic hepatitis C, 26 primary biliary cirrhosis, and 30 alcoholic liver cirrhosis. In addition, 51 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive and 47 anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive blood donors were screened. Hepatitis G virus was detected in 18% of patients with chronic hepatitis C, 13% of patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis, 11 % of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, 10% of anti-HCV-positive blood donors, and 2% of HBsAg-positive blood donors. Virus load and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels did not differ significantly in patients with HCV alone versus patients coinfected with HCV and HGV. However, mild liver fibrosis correlated with HGV coinfection. Hepatitis G virus did not influence ALT levels or liver damage in liver disease unrelated to viral infectio

    The extraction of protons from the halo of a circulating beam has been repeatedly demonstrated at the SPS. In a recent experiment a coasting lead ion beam was available at a momentum of 270 GeV/c per charge corresponding to a total momentum of 22 TeV/c per ion and the possibility to extract ultrarelativistic lead ions with a bent crystal could be demonstrated for the first time.     Helicobacter pylori Colonization in Infants and Young Children is Not Necessarily Associated with Diarrhoea

    A cohort of 151 infants and young children aged 1-23 months from a poor peri-urban community of Bangladesh was studied to determine the relationship between Helicobacter pylori colonization and morbidity due to diarrhoea. A 13C urea breath test was performed to detect the presence of H. pylori.Children were followed up at home every alternate day for 6 months and diarrhoeal morbidity datawere collected. Diarrhoeal morbidity was compared between H. pylori-positive and H. pylori-negative children. Sixty-eight (45 per cent) children were H. pylori positive and 83 (55 per cent) were H. pylori negative. During the first 1-month period following the breath test, three (4.4 per cent) H. pylori-positive and four (4.8 per cent) H. pylori-negative children had diarrhoea. Thirty-two (47 per cent) of the children in the positive group and 43 (52 per cent) in the negative group had one or more episodesof diarrhoea during the 6-month follow-up period. Median number of diarrhoeal episodes was 1.0(range 1.0-4.0) in the H. pylori-positive children and 2.0 (range 1.0-5.0) in the H. pylori-negativechildren (p = 0.19).     The extraction of high energy particles from a circular accelerator by means of channeling in bent crystals is an attractive alternative to classical extraction schemes, in particular for high energy proton colliders where a classical scheme becomes expensive and incompatible with normal operation this paper reviews the ongoing extraction experiments at the CERN-SPS with bent silicon crystals. it describes the principles of beam extraction by means of a bent crystal and the different extraction schemes used: firs- and multi-pass extraction and the methods to create diffusion. The limitations in tuning the accelerator to the desired impact parameters and crucial items concerning crystal preparation, bending and pre-alignment are discussed. the experimental procedures including an overview of the detection of circulation and extracted beam are given. Finally the paper summarizes the results of these experiments together with ideas for future developments
