Convergence and Distortions: the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland between 1996–2009
The paper interprets the growth and convergence experience of three Central-Eastern European economies (the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland) through the lens of the stochastic neoclassical growth model. It adapts the methodology of Business Cycle Accounting (Chari, Kehoe and McGrattan 2007) to economies on a transition path. The paper uses the method to uncover distortions (‘wedges’) on the labor and capital markets, and then presents various comparisons and counterfactuals based on them. Results show that (i) capital and labor market distortions vary across the three economies, but they are well within the range of advanced economies; (ii) the Polish and Hungarian labor wedges are high, and the Czech labor wedge increases; (iii) the evolution of Hungarian wedges followed a different path than the evolution of Polish and Czech wedges, and (iv) realistic reductions in the capital and labor wedges would lead to significant output gains for Hungary and Poland.convergence, distortions, Central-Eastern Europe, business cycle accounting
Wage setting in Hungary: evidence from a firm survey
This paper presents new evidence on the flexibility of the Hungarian labor market, with special emphasis on wages. The results are based on a new survey on wage setting among Hungarian firms. The survey is part of the Eurosystem Wage Dynamics Network (WDN), and it is a harmonized questionnaire administered in 17 countries in Europe, including almost all Euro Area countries as well as five Central and Eastern European countries. The survey results show that the Hungarian labor market, while institutionally flexible, appears to be surprisingly rigid. The survey evidence points to low turnover and possibly more rigid wages than previously thought. JEL Classification: C83, J01, J30Hungary, survey, wage dynamics network, Wage setting
Wage setting in Hungary: evidence from a firm survey
We document results from a survey of wage setting in Hungarian enterprises. The survey was developed and coordinated by the Eurosystem Wage Dynamics Network, and it was administered in 17 European countries; this allows us to put the Hungarian findings in context. The main conclusion from the survey is that while Hungarian firms operate in a quite flexible institutional environment, their wage setting practices are relatively rigid. In its wage setting outcomes, Hungary shares more similarities with Western European countries than with countries in the Central and Eastern European region. The survey provides strong evidence that the observed wage setting behaviour can be explained by internal factors related to employee motivation, perceived fairness, and firms’ desire to maintain a desired wage distribution.wage setting, survey, Hungary, Wage Dynamics Network.
Variational separable expansion scheme for two-body Coulomb-scattering problems
We present a separable expansion approximation method for Coulomb-like
potentials which is based on Schwinger variational principle and uses
Coulomb-Sturmian functions as basis states. The new scheme provides faster
convergence with respect to our formerly used non-variational approach.Comment: some typos correcte
A szakirodalomban bevett gyakorlat állományi adatokból munkapiaci áramlásokat számolni.

Mi magyarázza a világgazdaság hosszú stagnálása utáni robbanásszerű növekedést? Miért sikerült a mai fejlett országoknak tartós, kiegyensúlyozott növekedést elérniük? Milyen okokra vezethető vissza a világ többi országának relatív leszakadása? Melyek a sikeres felzárkózás receptjei? Nyilvánvaló, hogy a dilemmáknak a megválaszolása alapvető fontosságú mind a világgazdaság, mind Magyarország számára. A feltett kérdések teljes megválaszolása természetesen lehetetlen, de a szerző – aki a Magyar Közgazdaságtudományi Egyesület hivatalba lépő elnökeként a magyar gazdaság elmúlt húsz évének növekedéséről tartott előadást az egyesület éves konferenciáján – korábbi és folyamatban lévő kutatásai alapján igyekszik részlegesen válaszolni.*
