Phase Coherence and Superfluid-Insulator Transition in a Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensate
We have studied the effects of a disordered optical potential on the
transport and phase coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of 7Li atoms.
At moderate disorder strengths (V_D), we observe inhibited transport and
damping of dipole excitations, while in time-of-flight images, random but
reproducible interference patterns are observed. In-situ images reveal that the
appearance of interference is correlated with density modulation, without
complete fragmentation. At higher V_D, the interference contrast diminishes as
the BEC fragments into multiple pieces with little phase coherence.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, distortions in figures 1 and 4 have been fixed in

More on coupling coefficients for the most degenerate representations of SO(n)
We present explicit closed-form expressions for the general group-theoretical
factor appearing in the alpha-topology of a high-temperature expansion of
SO(n)-symmetric lattice models. This object, which is closely related to
6j-symbols for the most degenerate representation of SO(n), is discussed in
detail.Comment: 9 pages including 1 table, uses IOP macros Update of Introduction and

Quantum mechanical spectral engineering by scaling intertwining
Using the concept of spectral engineering we explore the possibilities of
building potentials with prescribed spectra offered by a modified intertwining
technique involving operators which are the product of a standard first-order
intertwiner and a unitary scaling. In the same context we study the iterations
of such transformations finding that the scaling intertwining provides a
different and richer mechanism in designing quantum spectra with respect to
that given by the standard intertwiningComment: 8 twocolumn pages, 5 figure
An absolute quantum energy inequality for the Dirac field in curved spacetime
Quantum Weak Energy Inequalities (QWEIs) are results which limit the extent
to which the smeared renormalised energy density of a quantum field can be
negative. On globally hyperbolic spacetimes the massive quantum Dirac field is
known to obey a QWEI in terms of a reference state chosen arbitrarily from the
class of Hadamard states; however, there exist spacetimes of interest on which
state-dependent bounds cannot be evaluated. In this paper we prove the first
QWEI for the massive quantum Dirac field on four dimensional globally
hyperbolic spacetime in which the bound depends only on the local geometry;
such a QWEI is known as an absolute QWEI
RIVERINE DISSOLVED ORGANIC MATTER DECOMPOSITION AND DYNAMICS
Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are intimately linked through the transfer of energy and materials. A common example of ecosystem linkage is the input of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) to rivers and streams. DOM can play a variety of roles in stream ecosystem function by fueling local food webs, influencing trophic state, and affecting the dissolved nutrient availability. Microorganisms utilize, transform, and produce DOM during microbial metabolism, a relationship that links microbes to DOM quality and quantity. Chemical and physical properties are known to vary with DOM source, and thus the type of terrestrial input may dictate how DOM is processed in a stream. Using laboratory microcosms, and added terrestrial organic matter substrates, we carried out a leaching experiment over forty-five days. We employed a suite of complementary techniques to determine the effect of leaching DOM sources on microorganisms, DOM processing, and ecosystem function. Microbial community composition changed from the original stream water inoculum and depended on DOM source. Cell abundances for all DOM sources spiked after two days, after which abundances dropped and remained relatively steady until the end of the experiment. DOM concentrations decreased exponentially with the maximum amount of carbon utilization taking place within the first five days. The DOM fluorescent signature, initially influenced by amino acid-like fluorescence shifts to more humic-like character over the course of the experiment, indicating DOM humification over time. Our results showcase the advantages of interdisciplinary tools to elucidate the connection of microbial processing, DOM chemistry, and ecosystem function
Exactly Solvable Hydrogen-like Potentials and Factorization Method
A set of factorization energies is introduced, giving rise to a
generalization of the Schr\"{o}dinger (or Infeld and Hull) factorization for
the radial hydrogen-like Hamiltonian. An algebraic intertwining technique
involving such factorization energies leads to derive -parametric families
of potentials in general almost-isospectral to the hydrogen-like radial
Hamiltonians. The construction of SUSY partner Hamiltonians with ground state
energies greater than the corresponding ground state energy of the initial
Hamiltonian is also explicitly performed.Comment: LaTex file, 21 pages, 2 PostScript figures and some references added.

Coalescing binary systems of compact objects: Dynamics of angular momenta
The end state of a coalescing binary of compact objects depends strongly on
the final total mass M and angular momentum J. Since gravitational radiation
emission causes a slow evolution of the binary system through quasi-circular
orbits down to the innermost stable one, in this paper we examine the
corresponding behavior of the ratio J/M^2 which must be less than 1(G/c) or
about 0.7(G/c) for the formation of a black hole or a neutron star
respectively. The results show cases for which, at the end of the inspiral
phase, the conditions for black hole or neutron star formation are not
satisfied. The inclusion of spin effects leads us to a study of precession
equations valid also for the calculation of gravitational waveforms.Comment: 22 pages, AASTeX and 13 figures in PostScrip
Photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate near a Feshbach Resonance
We measure the effect of a magnetic Feshbach resonance (FR) on the rate and
light-induced frequency shift of a photoassociation resonance in ultracold
Li. The photoassociation-induced loss rate coefficient, , depends
strongly on magnetic field, varying by more than a factor of 10 for fields
near the FR. At sufficiently high laser intensities, for a thermal gas
decreases with increasing intensity, while saturation is observed for the first
time in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The frequency shift is also strongly
field-dependent and exhibits an anomalous blue-shift for fields just below the
FR.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. v2: updated comparison with theory; added

Duality and Anholonomy in Quantum Mechanics of 1D Contact Interactions
We study systems with parity invariant contact interactions in one dimension.
The model analyzed is the simplest nontrivial one --- a quantum wire with a
point defect --- and yet is shown to exhibit exotic phenomena, such as strong
vs weak coupling duality and spiral anholonomy in the spectral flow. The
structure underlying these phenomena is SU(2), which arises as accidental
symmetry for a particular class of interactions.Comment: 4 pages ReVTeX with 4 epsf figures. KEK preprint 2000-3. Correction
