    Smart Engagement and Smart Urbanism: Integrating "The Smart" Into Participatory Planning and Community Engagement

    The smart city epitomizes a new paradigm shift in urban planning, policy, and cities. Smart cities require and are powered by smart city principles to succeed, including smart technologies, smart infrastructure, and smart governance; however, they also need to engage closely with the citizens who are most affected by the deployment of the smart city and who also embrace the diverse perspectives, experiences, and opportunities of living in smart cities, i.e., smart engagement. What would be forms of collaborative democracy and inclusive citizen participation in smart city planning? To what extent can smart city planning respond and address inequality, justice, and social and digital division? How can we create community-based climate change planning with the smart? What would be a smart community platform that supports smart engagement, and how do cities around the world establish smart city policy and assess the impact on smart engagement? This thematic issue aims to answer these questions by exploring new visions, facets and methods, practices, and tools for enabling smart engagement. Drawing on research from various countries and cities across the world, the contributions bring new prospects of smart engagement and smart urbanism and illuminate how the theory, plan and policy, and practices of smart engagements are binding to the extent of citizen participation and engagement in smart cities

    Dimensions of Affecting Factors on the Acceptance of Smartphones regarding Travel Information

    With hand-held devices and mobile computing becoming ubiquitous in our lives, it is true that many people are interested inthe usage of smartphones in the tourism industry. However, even though there are lots of studies on technology acceptanceand online travel information, there is little research on smartphone acceptance for travel information. The aim of this study isto investigate the determinants of travelers’ intentions to adopt smartphones within the context of their travel activities. Inthis paper we propose a new approach to examine the intention of travelers to use smartphones by viewing smartphone usagefrom two standpoints: hardware (technology) and software (online travel information). In terms of hardware, the unitedtheory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model is used to investigate the intention to use smartphones, and thetravel websites satisfaction (E-SAT) model is used to investigate the intention to use smartphones in terms of software.     Division and Unification: Seen through the Eyes of Korean Migrants in Berlin

    Based on qualitative fieldwork among first generation Korean immigrants in Berlin, this article sheds light on their lived experiences of German division and unification. Our research questions are threefold; first, how do these immigrants from the divided Korea perceive the division and unification of Germany? Second, did the fact that the division of Germany could be overcome affect their views on the division and unification of the Korean Peninsula? Third, are there any differences between Koreans in Germany and Koreans in Korea with respect to their views on unification? Our research suggests that different from South Korea, where the discourses in the media and the academia tend to assume sharply antagonistic attitudes, discourses among Koreans in Germany are generally much more supportive of unification. This is because they have a positive perception of German unification in everyday life and, furthermore, have constructed for themselves a future-oriented identity as a people of the Korean Peninsula that will eventually be unified. Korean immigrants in Germany are considerably more optimistic about the possibility of Korean unification than people in South Korea

    The Relationship Between Chaebol And Firm Value Using Bayesian Network

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of being a chaebol company, the biggest company characteristic variable, on firm value. It tries to overcome the limitation of multiple regression analysis mostly used in preceding research. That is, as multiple regression analysis assumes uniform linearity between dependent and independent variables, it could not reflect the diverse types of the real world. Thus, based on being a chaebol company and financial information, company characteristic variables influencing firm value, this study derives causal relationships existing between them. The results could help managers and various accounting information users in their decision-making by providing them with information of what company characteristics would directly or indirectly influence firm value. To this end, this study utilizes Bayesian Network and attempts Markov Blanket. In the end, all the analysis methods used in this study not only provides significant results, but also raises its practical value by offering information of diverse situations that could occur in the real world

    Rank-based distance metric learning: An application to image retrieval

    We present a novel approach to learn distance metric for information retrieval. Learning distance metric from a number of queries with side information, i.e., relevance judgements, has been studied widely, for example pairwise constraint-based distance metric learning. However, the capacity of existing algorithms is limited, because they usually assume that the distance between two similar objects is smaller than the distance between two dissimilar objects. This assumption may not hold, especially in the case of information retrieval when the input space is heterogeneous. To address this problem explicitly, we propose rankbased distance metric learning. Our approach overcomes the drawback of existing algorithms by comparing the distances only among the relevant and irrelevant objects for a given query. To avoid over-fitting, a regularizer based on the Burg matrix divergence is also introduced. We apply the proposed framework to tattoo image retrieval in forensics and law enforcement application domain. The goal of the application is to retrieve tattoo images from a gallery database that are visually similar to a tattoo found on a suspect or a victim. The experimental results show encouraging results in comparison to the standard approaches for distance metric learning. 1

    Mixed cultures of Kimchi lactic acid bacteria show increased cell density and lactate productivity

    This study was carried out to determine the characteristics of cell growth, lactate production and amino acid secretion among four kimchi lactic acid bacteria (Leuconostoc mesenteroides JEI, Leuconostoc kimchi 132, Lactobacillus sakei 171, and Weissella koreensis 521) alone and in selected mixtures. In solo culture, L. sakei 171 was superior in cell growth, lactate production and the release of amino acids to the extracellular medium. In contrast, W. koreensis 521 showed the least cell growth, lactate production and amino acid release among the tested bacteria. W. koreensis 521 consumed essential amino acids for growth, whereas L. sakei 171 released several of the essential amino acids important for the growth of W. koreensis 521. When we mixed L. sakei 171 and W. koreensis 521 at optimal concentrations, the obtained cell growth and lactic acid production were higher than those seen with either strain alone, presumably reflecting mutual effects between the two strains. Mixed culture of two kimchi lactobacilli on batch fermentation increased the cell density and lactic acid production with low nutrients consumption. These results suggest that mixed culturing of kimchi lactobacilli may be more effective than single culturing of kimchi lactic acid bacteria for improving lactic acid production.Keywords: Kimchi lactic acid bacteria, amino acid utilization, nutrients consumption.African Journal of BiotechnologyVol. 12(25), pp. 4000-400

    Anti-anxiety effect of methanol extract of Pericarpium zanthoxyli using a strychnine-sensitive glycine receptor model

    Purpose: To determine if the methanol extract of Pericarpium zanthoxyli exerts anti-anxiety effects and also to explore any probable anti-anxiety mechanism in vivo.Methods: The staircase test, elevated plus maze test, rota-rod treadmill test and convulsions induced by strychnine and picrotoxin on mice were tested to identify potential mechanism of anti-anxiety activity of the plant extract.Results: The plant extract (10 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly reduced rearing numbers in the staircase test while it increased the time spent in the open arms as well as the number of entries to the open arms in the elevated plus maze test, suggesting that it has significant anti-anxiety activity. Furthermore, the extract inhibited strychnine-induced convulsion. However, it had little effect on picrotoxin-induced convulsion, suggesting that its anti-anxiety activity may be linked to strychnine-sensitive glycine receptor and not GABA receptor.Conclusion: These results suggest that the Pericarpium zanthoxyli extract may be beneficial for the control of anxiety.Keywords: Anti-anxiety, Pericarpium zanthoxyli, Glycine Receptor, GABA Recepto

    Hull-form optimization of a 66,000 dwt bulk carrier in irregular wave condition

    This paper deploys optimization techniques to obtain the optimum hull form of a 66,000 DWT bulk carrier in calm water and in irregular head waves at sea state 6. Parametric modification functions for the bow hull-form variation are SAC shape, section shape (U-V type, DLWL type). Multi-objective functions are applied to minimize the values of wave-making resistance in calm water and mean added resistance in waves. WAVIS version 1.3 is used to obtain wave-making resistance in calm water condition. The modified Fujii and Takahashi's formula is applied to obtain the added resistance in short waves. The added resistance in long wave is obtained from the potential-flow solver based on the 3-D panel method. And the mean added resistance in irregular head waves is obtained by linear superposition of the wave spectrum and the response function. The PSO (Particle swarm optimization) algorithm is employed for the optimization technique. The resistance and motion characteristics in calm water, in regular head waves and in irregular head waves of the two hull forms are compared. It has been shown that the optimal brings 6.8% reduction in the mean added resistance at sea state 6

    Is Foreign Direct Investment Effective From The Perspective Of Tax Avoidance? An Analysis Of Tax Avoidance Through The International Transfer Pricing Behaviors Of Korean Corporations

    This study examines whether multinational companies carry out tax avoidance through subsidiaries. An empirical analysis was conducted of 4,585 Korean firms from 2001 to 2010 by company and year. The results are as follows. First, MNCs that have become more internationally diversified through the establishment of overseas subsidiaries generally show a higher tendency to avoid tax. Thus, the analysis results show a positive correlation between globally diversified MNCs and corporate tax avoidance. This correlation is established due to the firms' active use of tax strategies (investment tax credits, tax cuts) applicable to the various countries in which they have expanded their businesses. Second, the analysis results showed that these firms actively avoided tax with overseas transfer pricing behaviors when compared to companies without overseas subsidiaries. Thus, the adjustment of sales prices and purchase value through actual transactions increased the propensity of the parent company to avoid tax.
