Spatially homogeneous solutions of the Vlasov-Nordstr\"om-Fokker-Planck system

The Vlasov-Nordstr\"{o}m-Fokker-Planck system describes the evolution of self-gravitating matter experiencing collisions with a fixed background of particles in the framework of a relativistic scalar theory of gravitation. We study the spatially-homogeneous system and prove global existence and uniqueness of solutions for the corresponding initial value problem in three momentum dimensions. Additionally, we study the long time asymptotic behavior of the system and prove that even in the absence of friction, solutions possess a non-trivial asymptotic profile. An exact formula for the long time limit of the particle density is derived in the ultra-relativistic case.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure. Several changes from previous version. To appear in J. Diff. Invertibility of frame operators on Besov-type decomposition spaces

We derive an extension of the Walnut-Daubechies criterion for the invertibility of frame operators. The criterion concerns general reproducing systems and Besov-type spaces. As an application, we conclude that L2L^2 frame expansions associated with smooth and fast-decaying reproducing systems on sufficiently fine lattices extend to Besov-type spaces. This simplifies and improves recent results on the existence of atomic decompositions, which only provide a particular dual reproducing system with suitable properties. In contrast, we conclude that the L2L^2 canonical frame expansions extend to many other function spaces, and, therefore, operations such as analyzing using the frame, thresholding the resulting coefficients, and then synthesizing using the canonical dual frame are bounded on these spaces

Experimental Tests of Particle Flow Calorimetry

Precision physics at future colliders requires highly granular calorimeters to support the Particle Flow Approach for event reconstruction. This article presents a review of about 10 - 15 years of R\&D, mainly conducted within the CALICE collaboration, for this novel type of detector. The performance of large scale prototypes in beam tests validate the technical concept of particle flow calorimeters. The comparison of test beam data with simulation, of e.g.\ hadronic showers, supports full detector studies and gives deeper insight into the structure of hadronic cascades than was possible previously.Comment: 55 pages, 83 figures, to appear in Reviews of Modern physic

Ética empresarial republicana: la aportación de la ética del diálogo de la Escuela de Erlangen

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this paper is to present the proposals of the Erlangen School for a republican conception of business ethics, which has become a key reference lo the European context. Republican business ethics, based on the constructivism of the Erlangen School and the discourse ethics of the Frankfurt School, began to take shape at eighties in Germany and defines the company as “an institution with public responsibilities and duties”. Throughout this article 1 will attempt to present a solid and coherent conception of business ethics, from both the theoretical and the practical points of view. Republican business ethics is capable of integrating ethical claims with organizational aspects, it comes close to praxis and it is systematic.

Supporting teachers in collaborative student modeling: a framework and an implementation

    Get PDF
Collaborative student modeling in adaptive learning environments allows the learners to inspect and modify their own student models. It is often considered as a collaboration between students and the system to promote learners’ reflection and to collaboratively assess the course. When adaptive learning environments are used in the classroom, teachers act as a guide through the learning process. Thus, they need to monitor students’ interactions in order to understand and evaluate their activities. Although, the knowledge gained through this monitorization can be extremely useful to student modeling, collaboration between teachers and the system to achieve this goal has not been considered in the literature. In this paper we present a framework to support teachers in this task. In order to prove the usefulness of this framework we have implemented and evaluated it in an adaptive web-based educational system called PDinamet.Postprint (author's final draft

Productivity, adjustment costs and R&D investment prices An analysis of a panel of Spanish manufacturing companies

This study analyses the role played by adjustment costs and R&D investment prices in total R&D productivity. The results show that on average, for each monetary unit increase in adjustment costs produces a fall in productivity of 0.034 monetary units.R&D, productivity, adjustment costs

Financial Restrictions, Personal Income Tax (PIT) and Demand for a Permanent Home in a Dynamic Model. An analysis with Panel Data for Spain

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the way in which income tax and liquidity determine the purchase or rental of a permanent home in Spain. To do this, we have developed a theoretical dynamic model based on Euler’s equation. This model is verified using a sample from the 1991-1995 Panel of income taxpayers. Results suggest that the degree of financial restriction is the most relevant variable when determining the possibility of purchasing a home, while tax incentives increase their relative weighting once this asset has been acquired. Incentives for renting a home are relatively insignificant particularly for taxpayers who habitually rent their homes.personal income tax, liquidity, permanent home, tax incentives

Thermally assisted interlayer magnetic coupling through Ba0.05Sr0.95TiO3 barriers

We report on the interlayer exchange coupling across insulating barriers observed on Ni80Fe20/Ba0.05Sr0.95TiO3/La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 (Py/BST0.05/LSMO) trilayers. The coupling mechanism has been analyzed in terms of the barrier thickness, samples' substrate, and temperature. We examined the effect of MgO (MGO) and SrTiO3 (STO) (001) single-crystalline substrates on the magnetic coupling and also on the magnetic anisotropies of the samples in order to get a deeper understanding of the magnetism of the structures. We measured a weak coupling mediated by spin-dependent tunneling phenomena whose sign and strength depend on barrier thickness and substrate. An antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange prevails for most of the samples and smoothly increases with the barrier thicknesses as a consequence of the screening effects of the BST0.05. The coupling monotonically increases with temperature in all the samples and this behavior is attributed to thermally assisted mechanisms. The magnetic anisotropy of both magnetic components has a cubic symmetry that in the case of permalloy is added to a small uniaxial component.Fil: Carreira, Santiago José.
