    Electrochemical reactions at lead dioxide electrodes

    Preliminary passivation studies established that kinetic measurements could be made at α- and β-lead dioxide electrodes, in perchloric acid electrolytes, without the intrusion of solid films. The kinetics of the rate controlling exchange reaction at α- and β-PbO2 have been investigated using the galvanostatic pulse technique. The overpotential-current density data was interpreted in terms of two rate controlling charge transfer mechanisms. Around the equilibrium potential the reaction mechanism appears as a simultaneous two-electron transfer which changed to two consecutive single-electron transfer steps at high overpotential. Possible reaction mechanisms have been discussed on the basis of the observed kinetic parameters. Differential capacitance-potential data for α- and β-PbO2 has been measured in inert electrolytes.     System size dependence of strangeness production at 158 AGeV

    Strange particle production in A+A interactions at 158 AGeV is studied by the CERN experiment NA49 as a function of system size and collision geometry. Yields of charged kaons, phi and Lambda are measured and compared to those of pions in central C+C, Si+Si and centrality-selected Pb+Pb reactions. An overall increase of relative strangeness production with the size of the system is observed which does not scale with the number of participants. Arguing that rescattering of secondaries plays a minor role in small systems the observed strangeness enhancement can be related to the space-time density of the primary nucleon-nucleon collisions.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Presented at Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, Franc

    Cultural Resources Survey of the Proposed North 2 Elevated Storage Tank and Access Road, El Paso County, Texas

    On 23 November 2016, Versar Inc. performed a pedestrian survey for the proposed No 2. Elevated Storage Tank and access Road. The inventory followed the standards outlined under THC’s Archaeological Survey Standards for Texas and Rules of Practice and Procedure for the Antiquities Code of Texas for 5.94 acres of land in northeast El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. The proposed survey parcel is positioned adjacent to U.S. Highway 54-along the east-northeast margin of the highway. The rectangular parcel terminates immediately south of the existing Kinder Morgan pipeline ROW corridor. The area of potential effect is on property owned by El Paso Water, a sub-entity of the City of El Paso. The project goal was to identify all prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in the survey parcel and make National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendations for any newly discovered sites. The survey documented no cultural resource sites and no isolated finds. Due to the lack of cultural resources and a general absence of geomorphic/cultural context, no further work is recommended for the APE proposed for the No. 2 Elevated Storage Tank and access Road

    On July 31, 2015 Versar Inc. performed a linear pedestrian survey which followed the standards outlined under THC’s Archaeological Survey Standards for Texas and Rules of Practice and Procedure for the Antiquities Code of Texas on 8.8 acres of land in east El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. The proposed survey parcel is positioned between Global Reach Drive and the Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Plant, north of Montana Avenue (U.S. Highway 62/180). The area of potential effect is on property owned by El Paso International Airport, a sub-entity of the City of El Paso. The project goal was to identify all prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in the survey parcel and make National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendations for any newly discovered sites. The survey documented no cultural resource sites and only seven isolated finds; the isolated finds were fully documented and are not eligible for a NRHP recommendation. Due to the lack of cultural resources and a general absence of geomorphic/cultural context, no further work is recommended for the APE proposed for the reverse osmosis water treatment plant

    Charm production from the direct reconstruction of D0D^0 (D0→KπD^0\to K\pi up to 2 GeV/cc) and indirect lepton measurements via charm semileptonic decays (c→e+Xc\to e+X at 0.9\textlesspTp_T\textless5.0 GeV/cc and c→μ+Xc\to \mu+X at 0.17\textlesspTp_{T}\textless0.25 GeV/cc) at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV Au+Au collisions are analyzed.     Complementary Therapy to Target LDL Cholesterol: The Role of the Ezetimibe/Simvastatin Combination

    Cardiovascular (CV) disease remains the number 1 cause of death in the USA. Nonetheless, there has been a decline in the age-adjusted death rate for coronary heart disease (CHD) which may be due to more aggressive treatment guidelines for treating CV risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. The recent update to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines have recommended lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals in high-risk patients. Based on the new targets for LDL-C, clinicians will need more efficacious lipid-lowering therapies. One of these newer therapies is the combination of ezetimibe and simvastatin. This article reviews the implications of the updated guidelines and discusses the efficacy and safety of ezetimibe/simvastatin for lowering LDL-C

    Alcohol-branded merchandise : Association with Australian adolescents’ drinking and parent attitudes

    There is growing evidence that young people own alcohol-branded merchandise (ABM), and that ownership influences their drinking intentions and behaviours. However, there is a paucity of research on parents' knowledge or attitudes in relation to ownership of ABM. Study 1 (n = 210) identified high levels of ownership of ABM and associations between ABM and drinking attitudes and behaviours. In Study 2, focus groups with Australian parents found that they were aware of ABM—and many had items of ABM in their home—but they had generally not engaged in consideration of the potential impact on their children. They clearly perceived ABM as advertising and, on reflection, acknowledged that this form of marketing may influence children's decisions about drinking. There is a need to raise parental awareness of the effects of ABM and to endeavour to reduce children's exposure to this influential form of alcohol marketing

    Transport of flexible chiral objects in a uniform shear flow

    The transport of slightly deformable chiral objects in a uniform shear flow is investigated. Depending on the equilibrium configuration one finds up to four different asymptotic states that can be distinguished by a lateral drift velocity of their center of mass, a rotational motion about the center of mass and deformations of the object. These deformations influence the magnitudes of the principal axes of the second moment tensor of the considered object and also modify a scalar index characterizing its chirality. Moreover, the deformations induced by the shear flow are essential for the phenomenon of dynamical symmetry breaking: Objects that are achiral under equilibrium conditions may dynamically acquire chirality and consequently experience a drift in the lateral direction.Comment: 25 pages, 16 figure
