Conclusão sobre a International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society (IMACSSS) Conference - “Game, Drama, Ritual in Martial Arts and Combat Sports”

The present report provides a brief account of the first conference of the International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society (IMACSSS), held in Genova (Italy) on June 8th-10th, 2012. There were 43 oral presentations and 15 posters divided into five themes: (1) Psychological dimensions of martial arts and combat sports (MA&CS); (2) Sociological and historical aspects of MA&CS; (3) Bio physical, bio technical and bio tactical issues in MA&CS; (4) Pedagogy and didactic methodologies in MA&CS; (5) Philosophical aspects, anthropological conceptions and taxonomy in MA&CS. The conference was a well-organised and unique meeting of MA&CS researchers with a wide variety of topics, international presence and expertise. It provided a good opportunity to consolidate and broaden scientific knowledge and research in MA&CS and contributed to the integration of the scientific community involved in their study.El presente informe resume la primera conferencia de la International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society (IMACSSS), celebrada en Génova (Italia) entre los días 8 y 10 de junio de 2012. Informe sobre el taller “Organizando, gestionando y regulando las artes marciales”, durante la 21ª conferencia de la EASM

[ES] El presente informe resume el taller “Organizando, gestionando y regulando las artes marciales”, organizado durante la 21ª conferencia de la EASM celebrada en Estambul (Turquía) el 12 de septiembre de 2013. Este ha sido el primer taller sobre los aspectos políticos y organizativos de las artes marciales (de contacto pleno). Durante este encuentro internacional cuatro científicos describieron en profundidad la historia reciente y situación actual de la organización y regulación de las artes marciales en su país (i.e., Francia, Flandes – Bélgica, Italia y Holanda). El taller fue un evento único, una buena oportunidad para obtener una mejor comprensión de la situación específica de la regulación de las artes marciales en algunos países europeos, y para intercambiar resultados de las investigaciones actuales sobre este tema. La realización de más investigaciones podría ayudar a comprender mejor cómo tratar los problemas asociados a la gobernanza, regulación y gestión de las artes marciales en el contexto europeo.[EN] The present report provides a brief account of a workshop entitled “Organising, Managing and Regulating Martial Arts” organised during the 21st EASM conference held in Istanbul (Turkey) on September 12th, 2013. The workshop was a unique meeting which provided a good opportunity to obtain a better understanding of the specific situation with regard to the regulation of martial arts in some European countries and to exchange results of current research concerning this topic. Further research could be helpful to gain more insight in dealing with problems related to governance, regulation and management of martial arts within a European context.[PT] O presente texto resume o workshop “Organizar, Administrar e Regular as Artes Marciais”, organizado durante a 21.ª conferência da EASM, celebrada em Istambul (Turquia), no dia 12 de setembro de 2013. Esta foi a primeira conferência centrada nos aspetos políticos e organizativos das artes marciais (de pleno contacto físico). Durante este encontro internacional quatro científicos descreveram, em profundidade, a história recente e a atual situação da organização e regulação das artes marciais no seu País (i.e., França, Flandres ‐ Bélgica, Itália e Holanda). O congresso foi um evento único, uma excelente oportunidade para obter uma melhor compreensão da situação específica da regulação das artes marciais em alguns países europeus e para intercâmbio dos resultados das investigações atuais sobre o tema. A realização de mais investigações poderia ajudar a compreender melhor como tratar os problemas associados à governança, regulação e gestão das artes marciais no contexto europeu

Conditions for Successfully Increasing Disadvantaged Adolescents’ Engagement in and Development through Volunteering in Community Sport

A considerable number of adolescents in Western societies live in socially vulnerable situations. Approaches to improve this situation ultimately aim to make institutional changes through a focus on individual development. With regard to the latter, there have been high expectations regarding sport volunteering’s contribution to human capital development. Nevertheless, little understanding of the underlying conditions for, and possible outcomes of sport volunteering exists. This study’s aim was twofold: (1) to assess the conditions necessary to develop the human capital of disadvantaged adolescents through volunteering in community sport, and (2) to assess to what extent human capital can be developed. A qualitative research design was used to attain deeper insight into these conditions within eight community sport programs in Flanders (Northern Dutch-speaking region of Belgium), a setting that is not often used for youth developmental practices. Data were collected on repeated occasions over the course of each program through qualitative methods with local sport services and social partner organizations (N = 26) and participating adolescents (N = 26). Inductive analysis identified two categories of necessary conditions, (1) valuing and recognizing adolescents, and (2) informal and experiential learning. Results further showed the achievement of two types of perceived human capital developmental outcome (i.e., personal and interpersonal competences) through the fulfilment of these conditions. Findings also showed that although two of these programs made use of a more critical pedagogical approach to youth development by encouraging participants, not only to reflect on, but also to critically take part in the transformation of their own position within society; critical youth empowerment was not reached in the majority of the programs

Exploring embodiment through martial arts and combat sports: a review of empirical research

Since the late 1970s, social scientists have turned considerable attention to investigating martial arts and combat sports (MACS). In particular, this broad range of fighting disciplines has been shown to offer numerous avenues for scholarly enquiry into social change and personal transformation via processes of embodiment. Adopting a thematic structure, we assess the empirical literature in this area via four interconnecting categories pertaining to MACS and embodiment: (1) body cultures; (2) body pedagogies; (3) the embodiment of gender; and (4) bodily harm. Following this review, we identify several gaps in the existing literature, suggesting potential new topics and strategies for research connecting to the social world of physical culture more generally

THE SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL OUTCOMES OF MARTIAL ARTS PRACTISE AMONG YOUTH: A REVIEW

Martial arts involvement among the youth has been described in controversial terms. Studies regarding the effects of martial arts practise on youth show contrasting images. While some refer to enhanced personal and social opportunities for those that participate, others warn against increased levels of aggressiveness and antisocial behavior among its participants. The aim of the present review is to provide, firstly, an overview of the major findings of studies concerning the social-psychological outcomes of martial arts practise. Secondly, the limitations of those studies are discussed. From more than 350 papers, collected during a two-year lasting literature study, 27 papers met all criteria to be included in this study. This review revealed that even though a considerable amount of research on social-psychological outcomes of martial arts practise has been conducted over the years, to date, it has not brought clarity in the existing duality regarding the possible effects of martial arts involvement. It is proposed that a better understanding can be provided if specific influential factors are taken into account in future research (i.e., participants' characteristics, type of guidance, social context and structural qualities of the sport)
