A Land of Make Believe that Don’t Believe in Me : Dissent by Incongruity in Green Day’s Jesus of Suburbia

Following the September 11 terrorist attacks there were increased demands in America for patriotism. This attitude of hyper-patriotism, in accordance with the Bush Administration’s appropriation of the American civil religion, precluded many discursive possibilities for dissent. Yet there were some who still utilized the available outlets of public discourse to dissent from Bush Administration policies. Green Day’s 2004 song, “Jesus of Suburbia,” is just such an exemplary dissent discourse. What follows is divided into four sections. First, I analyze the ideological circumstances which preceded the release of “Jesus of Suburbia.” Second, I reflect on the respective conceptual insights of Ivie’s humanizing dissent and Burke’s perspective by incongruity; ultimately, I suggest their programs be joined into an individual construct: dissent by incongruity. Third, I examine how “Jesus of Suburbia” employed dissent by incongruity to critique imperialistic policies. Finally, I argue Green Day’s use of dissent by incongruity reorients the direction of dissent discourse

Two Strivings: Uplift and Identity in African American Rhetorical Culture, 1900-1943

During the late nineteenth- and early twentieth century, the notion of “uplift” functioned as a major thematic within African American rhetorical culture. In this milieu, “uplift” generally connoted a sense of collective self-help. However, in contrast to more generalized reform efforts, uplift was expressed as a distinctly intraracial endeavor. That is, rather than overtly leveraging the dominant white society to enact legal or political reforms, uplift typically centered on the ways in which African Americans could enhance the quality of black life independent from white involvement. Understood as public proposals for how African Americans could employ forms of self-help to improve some dimension of black life, uplift appeals marked a rich site of rhetorical activity. The rhetorical substance of those appeals represents the general focus of this dissertation. More specifically, this study investigates how uplift was expressed in the public discourse of four prominent early twentieth-century black spokespersons: Mary Church Terrell, Marcus Garvey, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Ralph Ellison. Through rhetorical analysis of these four figures’ public appeals for uplift, this dissertation argues that, during the early twentieth century, uplift functioned as a dynamic symbolic source of black identity. In other words, public expressions of uplift did more than just promote ways of pursuing self-help; they also made available opportunities for understanding and performing black public identity

Negotiating the Ideological Boundaries of The Four Freedoms : An Analysis of African American Rhetoric from World War II

This project explores how African Americans continued the quest for civil rights during WWII. In order to do so, however, one must acknowledge that black spokespersons responded to competing discourses--particularly, the discourses of U.S. officials such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In an era where propaganda pervaded the public sphere, the sheer force of the white majority in the U.S. was politically and socially overwhelming. Thus, non-dominant groups, such as African Americans, were forced to react from a restricted discursive space. In this regard, my analysis cuts two-fold. First, I examine how President Roosevelt galvanized support for his Four Freedoms agenda by appealing to collective values. In appealing to collective values, Roosevelt placed a high demand on patriotism and unity. Roosevelt\u27s emphasis on collective values and national unity conveyed a homogenous sense of American identity which, in turn, discouraged public expression of minority and/or dissenting viewpoints. Second, I investigate how African American rhetors employed the principles of The Four Freedoms to formulate critiques of institutional racism. In particular, Ralph Ellison\u27s wartime editorials explicitly engaged The Four Freedoms. Ellison illustrated how, by tolerating oppressive systems, such as racism, colonialism, and imperialism, the U.S. and Allied forces actually undermined the ideals of The Four Freedoms. Using the ideographic method, I contend Ellison\u27s reinvention served to problematize The Four Freedoms in a way which highlighted the prejudices which afflicted African Americans and colonial peoples throughout the world

Qualifikation und Erwerbssituation in Deutschland - 20 Jahre BIBB/IAB-Erhebungen (Qualifications and employment situation in Germany - 20 years of BIBB/IAB surveys)

"After four BIBB/IAB surveys of the labour force focusing on the gaining and use of vocational qualifications, which cover a period of about 20 years, the time has come for a provisional appraisal. The BIBB/IAB surveys are large representative surveys of 0.1% of the labour force in Germany concerning qualifications, career history and current occupational situation. These surveys are conducted jointly by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training Affairs (Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung - BIBB) and by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) at intervals of 6-7 years. The aim of the studies is to obtain for the particular time of the survey differentiated representative information about the labour force on the one hand and about jobs in Germany on the other. As regards research into occupation and qualification the surveys constitute a socialscience addition to the microcensus survey conducted annually by the Federal Statistical Office, whose legally stipulated questionnaire is restricted to a few structural variables, though they are central ones. The sample size of the BIBB/IAB surveys, which is unusually large for such surveys in empirical social research, permits differentiated analyses of occupational fields, industries and various labour force sub-groups. Each of the individual surveys has a special focus subject. With all flexibility in incorporating new subject areas, in the four surveys conducted so far a broad set of comparable variables was included in order to determine structural changes over time." Impedance spectra classification for determining the state of charge on a lithium iron phosphate cell using a support vector machine

    Get PDF
An alternative method for determining the state of charge (SOC) on lithium iron phosphate cells by impedance spectra classification is given. Methods based on the electric equivalent circuit diagram (ECD), such as the Kalman Filter, the extended Kalman Filter and the state space observer, for instance, have reached their limits for this cell chemistry. The new method resigns on the open circuit voltage curve and the parameters for the electric ECD. Impedance spectra classification is implemented by a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The classes for the SVM-algorithm are represented by all the impedance spectra that correspond to the SOC (the SOC classes) for defined temperature and aging states. A divide and conquer based search algorithm on a binary search tree makes it possible to grade measured impedances using the SVM method. Statistical analysis is used to verify the concept by grading every single impedance from each impedance spectrum corresponding to the SOC by class with different magnitudes of charged error. © 2015 Author(s).BMWi/03 ET6003
