    The nature and influence of information quality and information asymmetry on decision-making by UK corporate boards of directors

    This thesis is about decision-making by a corporation’s board of directors - the core function of corporate governance. Under UK corporate governance control frameworks, corporate boards accept collective responsibility for the quality of decision-making processes and the consequences. This thesis develops a conceptual framework that provides a nuanced definition and typology of the functions of corporate governance, and an inter-related typology of the information used in corporate governance decision-making. Using this conceptual framework and typology, this thesis explores the use of information in its role as the key resource for corporate board decision-making. Through quantitative and qualitative research, it is demonstrated that the purpose and quality of a director’s information, and its use in decision-making and consequential risk-taking, is individual and variable to each director, despite the assumption of collective endeavours inherent in contemporary control frameworks. This thesis also demonstrates that, in general, non-executive directors accept and utilise lower quality information than the information accepted and utilised by executive directors. Therefore non-executive directors make lower quality, riskier decisions which are not sufficiently mitigated by the corporation. Based on the research undertaken, this thesis introduces a new theory of how corporate executive director agency works in practice

    A creative approach for undergraduate nursing students to learn anatomy and physiology : a qualitative exploratory study

    Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) courses in undergraduate nursing programs are often considered challenging for students. Typically, a wide variety of teaching strategies, including dissection, experiments, illustrations and photographs are used to engage students. This study aimed to explore and describe the learning experiences of an open creative assessment task on undergraduate nursing students of learning A&P. A total of eight students participated in semi-structured interviews. Two major themes emerged from the data, this included 'Bringing A&P to life' which included two sub-themes of 'Learning through peer teaching' and 'An easy way to learn', with the second major theme, 'Custom made learning' which included four sub-themes, 'To grade or not to grade', 'Catering for different learning styles', 'Logistics of group work', and 'Effect of group dynamics'. This qualitative exploratory study contributes to further pedagogical insights into art and/or creative approaches to teaching. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston

    Electrostatic potential on human leukocyte antigen: implications for putative mechanism of chronic beryllium disease.

    The pathobiology of chronic beryllium disease (CBD) involves the major histocompatibility complex class II human leukocyte antigen (HLA). Although occupational exposure to beryllium is the cause of CBD, molecular epidemiologic studies suggest that specific (Italic)HLA-DPB1(/Italic) alleles may be genetic susceptibility factors. We have studied three-dimensional structural models of HLA-DP proteins encoded by these genes. The extracellular domains of HLA-DPA1*0103/B1*1701, *1901, *0201, and *0401, and HLA-DPA1*0201/B1*1701, *1901, *0201, and *0401 were modeled from the X-ray coordinates of an HLA-DR template. Using these models, the electrostatic potential at the molecular surface of each HLA-DP was calculated and compared. These comparisons identify specific characteristics in the vicinity of the antigen-binding pocket that distinguish the different HLA-DP allotypes. Differences in electrostatics originate from the shape, specific disposition, and variation in the negatively charged groups around the pocket. The more negative the pocket potential, the greater the odds of developing CBD estimated from reported epidemiologic studies. Adverse impact is caused by charged substitutions in positions 55, 56, 69, 84, and 85, namely, the exact same loci identified as genetic markers of CBD susceptibility as well as cobalt-lung hard metal disease. These findings suggest that certain substitutions may promote an involuntary cation-binding site within a putatively metal-free peptide-binding pocket and therefore change the innate specificity of antigen recognition

    Multiplicities of π0\pi^{0}, η\eta, K0K^{0} and of charged particles in quark and gluon jets

    We compared the multiplicities of pizero, eta, Kzero and of charged particles in quark and gluon jets in 3-jet events, as measured by the OPAL experiment at LEP. The comparisons were performed for distributions unfolded to 100% pure quark and gluon jets, at an effective scale Qjet which took into account topological dependences of the 3-jet environment. The ratio of particle multiplicity in gluon jets to that in quark jets as a function of Qjet for pizero, eta and Kzero was found to be independent of the particle species. This is consistent with the QCD prediction that the observed enhancement in the mean particle rate in gluon jets with respect to quark jets should be independent of particle species. In contrast to some theoretical predictions and previous observations, we observed no evidence for an enhancement of eta meson production in gluon jets with respect to quark jets, beyond that observed for charged particles. We measured the ratio of the slope of the average charged particle multiplicity in gluon jets to that in quark jets, C, and we compared it to a next-to-next-to-next-to leading order calculation.
