Depletion of atmospheric neutrino fluxes from parton energy loss
The phenomenon of fully coherent energy loss (FCEL) in the collisions of
protons on light ions affects the physics of cosmic ray air showers. As an
illustration, we address two closely related observables: hadron production in
forthcoming proton-oxygen collisions at the LHC, and the atmospheric neutrino
fluxes induced by the semileptonic decays of hadrons produced in proton-air
collisions. In both cases, a significant nuclear suppression due to FCEL is
predicted. The conventional and prompt neutrino fluxes are suppressed by in their relevant neutrino energy ranges. Previous estimates of
atmospheric neutrino fluxes should be scaled down accordingly to account for
FCEL.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
HB 828: TANF Eligibility; Drug-Related Felonies
House Bill 828 (HB828) was proposed in 2016 to remove the ban on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) for individuals with felony-related drug convictions who are otherwise eligible to receive benefits. The TANF program is designed to help low income families achieve self-sufficiency. States receive block grants to design and operate programs that accomplish one of the purposes of the TANF program: 1) Provide assistance to needy families so children can be cared for in their own homes; 2) Reduce the dependency of parents by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage; 3) Prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies; 4) Encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families (Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, Section 401). With nearly 700,000 people released from state and federal prison each year, access to TANF benefits is particularly critical for helping formerly incarcerated individuals transitioning back to their home communities. Significant disparities in convictions and incarceration coupled with variations in state population between Whites and Nonwhites translate into a disproportionate impact of the felony drug ban (The Sentencing Project, 2015). Virginia is one of 14 states with a full ban on TANF benefits for individuals with felony-related drug convictions. Adoption of HB828 proposes to eliminate this lifetime ban and provide an opportunity for low income families to meet their basic needs during the period in which they are in most need
Shedding light on thermal photon and dilepton production
Electromagnetic radiation from the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is an important observable to be considered in heavy ion collision experiments. I will provide an update on recent advancements from perturbation theory and quenched lattice simulations. The resummed next-to-leading order (NLO) emission rate has recently been decomposed into transverse and longitudinal components, and extended to non-zero baryon chemical potential. The associated spectral function has also been tested against the Euclidean correlator, for continuum-extrapolated lattice data (at μB = 0)

Dilepton production at NLO and intermediate invariant-mass observables
The thermal QCD dilepton production rate is calculated at next-to-leading
order in the strong coupling and at finite baryon chemical potential. The
two-loop virtual photon self-energy is evaluated using finite temperature field
theory and combined consistently with the self-energy in the
Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal regime. We present new results for a dense baryonic
plasma. The rates are then integrated using (3+1)-dimensional fluid-dynamical
simulations calibrated to reproduce hadronic experimental results obtained at
RHIC at energies ranging from those of the Beam Energy Scan to GeV. We elaborate on the ability for dileptons to relay
information about the plasma baryonic content and temperature.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figure
