    Hyperbolic subdiffusive impedance

We use the hyperbolic subdiffusion equation with fractional time derivatives (the generalized Cattaneo equation) to study the transport process of electrolytes in media where subdiffusion occurs. In this model the flux is delayed in a non-zero time with respect to the concentration gradient. In particular, we obtain the formula of electrochemical subdiffusive impedance of a spatially limited sample in the limit of large and of small pulsation of the electric field. The boundary condition at the external wall of the sample are taken in the general form as a linear combination of subdiffusive flux and concentration of the transported particles. We also discuss the influence of the equation parameters (the subdiffusion parameter and the delay time) on the Nyquist impedance plots.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

A Case Report Discussing The Options for Placement of Glaucoma Drainage Devices in the Presence of Corneal Decompensation

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to discuss how the various placements of glaucoma drainage implants relate to corneal decompensation. Method: A 58-year Hispanic female presented for evaluation of decreased vision in the left eye for 2 years. This is a case report of a patient who underwent a secondary surgery to replace the anterior tube shunt implantation with a posterior shunt implantation following development of severe corneal decompensation. Results: Glaucoma tube shunt implants inserted into the ciliary sulcus of pseudophakic eyes shield the cornea offering protection against decompensation and avoid the risk of posterior segment complications. Conclusions: Placement of glaucoma drainage implants into the ciliary sulcus in pseudophakic patients with shallow anterior chambers, abnormal irido-corneal anatomy, or those at risk for corneal decompensation is a safe and effective method of not only lowering the intraocular pressure but also protecting the cornea against decompensation. As primary eye care providers, optometrists need to know the various treatment options and adverse effects associated with each procedure

A Case Report Discussing an Uncommon Peripheral Exudative Hemorrhagic Chorioretinopathy

Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to discuss an uncommon, unique hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy. Method: A 79-year-old-white female presented to clinic with complaints of difficulty reading at close distances and seeing faces at far distances in both eyes. An 85-year old white female presented with no visual complaints but stated redness in the nasal corner of her right eye. This is a case report of two patients that presented with geographic atrophy of the macula as well as midperipheral RPE alterations in both eyes, which resembled intraretinal hemorrhages. Results: The ocular findings associated with peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy may include midperipheral intraretinal hemorrhages, peripheral RPE mottling, subretinal fluid or hemorrhages, subretinal exudation, pigment epithelial detachments, and/or vitreous hemorrhages. Conclusions: Although this condition is rare, primary eye care providers should be aware of this unique clinical entity, its relationship to age-related macular degeneration, and when these patients require a referral to a retinal specialist

Italianness as Lived through the Body. Italian Women’s (Self-) Perception in Archival Health Columns. The experience of one’s own body is undoubtedly bound to certain places, environments and times. The experience of being an Italian woman is therefore different than that of being Polish, German, or American. The perception of the female body mirrors a country’s laws, a society’s level of demureness and the tolerance towards oneself and others. The work presented here stems from an interest in the representation of the female body as presented in health columns in the 1950-1965 issues of the weekly magazine “Grazia”. Through discourse analysis it is possible to obtain an image not only of the body, but also, metonymically, of Italian society at a time when Cesare Zavattini (1959) defined it as “a huge harem” made “of what is silenced and what is unuttered”. The analysis proposed herein aims at opening another perspective on Italianness, whereby “other” can be understood both as “female” (as de Beauvoir’s followers certainly would) or as “silenced” or “unuttered”. In addition to that, considering the type of corpus being analysed, the letters from the female readership offer a view on Italian women’s self-image. A perspective which is not only intimate, but also “from the inside” and that frequently has nothing to share with the image of Italian society that is common outside of Italy

Immunohistochemical identification and localisation of gastrin and somatostatin in endocrine cells of human pyloric gastric mucosa

The detailed description of the distribution of endocrine cells G and D producing important hormones that regulate activation of other cells in the human stomach may be a valuable source of information for opinions about mucosa changes in different diseases of the alimentary tract. The density and distribution of immunoreactive G and D cells in the pylorus of humans (donors of organs) were evaluated. The pylorus samples were collected after other organs were harvested for transplantation. The number of G cells in the pyloric mucosa of healthy people was higher than the number of D cells. G and D cells were distributed between columnar cells of epithelium mucosa. Multiform endocrine cells generally occurred: gastrin in the middle third of the mucosa and somatostatin cells in the basal half of the pyloric mucosa. The investigation of the pyloric part of the healthy human stomach showed a characteristic distribution of cells that reacted with antisera against gastrin and somatostatin

Polish version of the Cognitive Distortions Scale (CDS): Preliminary validation and personality correlates

    Get PDF
BackgroundThe aim of the two research studies presented in this article was to test the reliability and validity of the Polish version of the Cognitive Distortions Scale (CDS). The relation of the CDS to psychological measures of well-being and other theoretically relevant variables was also explored.Participants and procedureTwo correlational studies were conducted with psychology undergraduate students and their family members (n = 196 and n = 90, respectively). Participants completed a paper-pencil set of questionnaires that contained measures of cognitive errors (study 1) and scales related to perceived quality of life and psychological well-being (study 2).ResultsPreliminary results supported the reliability of the Polish version of CDS (with Cronbach’s α .91 and .90) and convergent validity as indicated by correlations with maladaptive self-views and perceived relationship quality.ConclusionsThe Polish version of CDS appears to be a reliable and valid measure of cognitive distortions
