    A revolutionary and operational tethered aerostat system illustrating new LTA technology

    An operational tethered aerostat system, which demonstrates utility of LTA systems, is described. It was made possible by development of a reliable tethered aerostat that is used to support broadcast equipment at an altitude of 10,000 feet. Two elements of the TCOM system, the aerostat and mooring station, are particularly relevant to the LTA Workshop. They demonstrate the feasibility of using LTA vehicles in real, operational, all-weather applications and, in addition, illustrate an advance in the overall technology base of LTA.     A corrosion control manual for rail rapid transit

    In 1979, during the planning stage of the Metropolitan Dade County Transit System, the need was expressed for a corrosion control manual oriented to urban rapid transit system use. This manual responds to that need. The objective of the manual is to aid rail rapid transit agencies by providing practical solutions to selected corrosion problems. The scope of the manual encompasses corrosion problems of the facilities of rapid transit systems: structures and tracks, platforms and stations, power and signals, and cars. It also discusses stray electric current corrosion. Both design and maintenance solutions are provided for each problem. Also included are descriptions of the types of corrosion and their causes, descriptions of rapid transit properties, a list of corrosion control committees and NASA, DOD, and ASTM specifications and design criteria to which reference is made in the manual. A bibliography of papers and excerpts of reports and a glossary of frequency used terms are provided

    Voice Content: Effects of Perceived Instrumentality and Interactional Fairness

    Voice (having oneā€™s say in an allocation procedure) was investigated for two different types of content (instrumental voice and expressive voice) associated with conditions of perceived intrumentality of voice and interactional fairness given by the allocator. One hundred and four undergraduate students at a midwestern university were used in a 2x2 factorial design. Data were collected from free form comments and a post-experimental questionnaire after subjects reacted to a simulated performance appraisal situation. Results did not show that voice content differed across conditions. Procedural justice perceptions were increased by a high level of interactional fairness and by a high level of instrumentality of voice

    We present evidence, based on lattice Boltzmann simulations, to show that the coarsening of the domains in phase separating binary fluids is not a scale-invariant process.     Estimation of the hydraulic parameters of unsaturated samples by electrical resistivity tomography

    In situ and laboratory experiments have shown that electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is an effective tool to image transient phenomena in soils. However, its application in quantifying soil hydraulic parameters has been limited. In this study, experiments of water inflow in unsaturated soil samples were conducted in an oedometer equipped to perform three-dimensional electrical measurements. Reconstructions of the electrical conductivity at different times confirmed the usefulness of ERT for monitoring the evolution of water content. The tomographic reconstructions were subsequently used in conjunction with a finite-element simulation to infer the water retention curve and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. The parameters estimated with ERT agree satisfactorily with those determined using established techniques, hence the proposed approach shows good potential for relatively fast characterisations.     Purpose of reviewThis article reviews the link between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with regard to similarities in genetic risk factors and immunopathogenesis. Emphasis is paid to the potential role of the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis in the etiopathogenesis of both periodontitis and RA, in particular by post-translational modification of arginine into citrulline.Recent findingsP. gingivalis, a major periodontal pathogen, is presently known as the only bacterium in the oral flora which contains a peptidyl arginine deiminase enzyme (PAD). This enzyme is necessary for citrullination. As a result, citrullinated proteins and P. gingivalis PAD, PAD2 and PAD4 (expressed by infiltrating neutrophils) are found in periodontal tissues. Autoantibodies directed to citrullinated proteins, so-called anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs), are found to be present in gingival crevicular fluid originating from inflamed gingival tissue. Furthermore, treatment studies have revealed that nonsurgical periodontal treatment, that is removal of sub-gingival calculus and biofilm deposits, is accompanied by a reduction in the severity of RA.SummaryIn this study the similarities in immune response and tissue degradation between RA and periodontitis are reviewed. It is shown that the two diseases share the same environmental and genetic risk factors, apart from the fact that there is a link between both diseases via citrullination of proteins by human PAD and P. gingivalis PAD.</p

    In Vitro Digestibility of Mountain-Grown Irrigated Perennial Legume, Grass and Forb Forages is Influenced by Elevated Non-Fibrous Carbohydrates and Plant Secondary Compounds

    BACKGROUND Perennial legumes cultivated under irrigation in the Mountain West USA have nonā€fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) concentrations exceeding 400ā€‰gā€‰kgāˆ’1, a level commonly found in concentrateā€based ruminant diets. Our objective was to determine the influence of NFC concentration and plant secondary compounds on in vitro rumen digestion of grass, legume and forb forages compared with digestion of their isolated neutral detergent fiber (NDF) fraction. Forages were composited from ungrazed paddocks of rotationally stocked, irrigated monoculture pastures between May and August 2016, frozen in the field, freezeā€dried, and ground. RESULTS The maximum rate (RMax) of gas production was greater for the legumes alfalfa (ALF; Medicago sativa L.) and birdsfoot trefoil (BFT; Lotus corniculatus L.) than for the legume cicer milkvetch (CMV; Astragalus cicer L.) the grass meadow brome (MBG; Bromus riparius Rehm.) and the nonā€legume forb small burnet (SMB; Sanguisorba minor Scop.), and intermediate for the legume sainfoin (SNF; Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.). The RMax of isolated NDF was greatest for BFT and CMV, intermediate for ALF, SNF and SMB and least for MBG. CONCLUSIONS More than 900ā€‰g of organic matter kgāˆ’1 dry matter of legumes was digested after 96ā€‰h. Across forages, the extent of wholeā€plant digestion increased with NFC and crude protein concentrations, decreased with NDF concentrations, and was modulated by secondary compounds.
