    The Long March or Bold Strokes : Comparing Strategies for Adopting EVS Learning Technology at a UK University

    In recent years there has been much encouragement to investigate the use of classroom technologies to enhance the student learning experience especially in the STEM subjects but now extending across other subject areas as well. A typical classroom technology is electronic voting system (EVS) handsets which allow a lecturer to invite students to vote for their choice from a selection of given answers. Recently, a medium-size UK University has purchased over 9000 EVS handsets for use across the academic Schools as an innovative means for supporting formative and summative testing. Numerous training and support sessions have been provided to staff with the intention of supporting new and experienced users and increasing the take up by academics. As noted in earlier research reported at ECEL 2013, the student feedback was very positive for the use of EVS for formative activities, and less so, for its use in summative assessment. A recent review of the trends of EVS adoption at the University has been undertaken to inform decision-making and future use and support for the technology. One aspect of this review has considered the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by different academic Schools. EVS adoption and use across the University has been compared and placed within Rogers’ theory of the diffusion of innovation. This paper further considers a set of six different strategies adopted for EVS use by academic Schools. They have been categorised according to several variables, including their choice of speed of uptake and the number of handsets in use. The inherent strengths and possible weaknesses of the approaches adopted are considered. Among the questions raised were, does a strategy of large-scale technology adoption over a short time period indicate a greater likelihood of long term engagement and ultimate adoption of the technology? Or, does a longer elapsed time taken for a gradual purchase and adoption of EVS technology suggest a greater inclination for the embedding of technology for enhancing learning? What other success factors should be considered alongside the training and support provided for technology adoption to enhance the likelihood of long term adoption of classroom technologies? The discussion provides a comparison of six different strategies identified across the university and the rationale behind them and then proposes a set of strategy choices which can lead to a greater likelihood of successful adoption of classroom technology

    Temperature distribution in a stellar atmosphere diagnostic basis

    A stellar chromosphere is considered a region where the temperature increases outward and where the temperature structure of the gas controls the shape of the spectral lines. It is shown that lines which have collision-dominated source sink terms, like the Ca(+) and Mg(+) H and K lines, can be used to obtain the distribution of temperature with height from observed line profiles. Intrinsic emission lines and geometrical emission lines are found in spectral regions where the continuum is depressed. In visual regions, where the continuum is not depressed, emission core in absorption lines are attributed to reflections of intrinsic emission lines

    Session:management of drainage near source – disconnection/minimise surface water entering public drainage

    Many combined sewer networks are currently constrained due to lack of capacity. Surface water entering the network may have an impact on the local environment by causing additional spills from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and flooding events. With the increasing number of developments taking place in Scotland, more and more demands are being placed upon the existing wastewater assets and infrastructure of the drainage utility, Scottish Water. The principal way of preventing these CSO spills/flooding event s is to reduce the number of surface water connections to the combined sewer network and promote more surface water discharges to nearby watercourses.The problem is being addressed by examining all development applications as they are considered by a drainage planning officer in the water authority. The research reported in this paper is investigating the conditions under which it is reasonable and practical for Scottish Water to accept surface water flows into its combined sewer network . This paper presents a summary of the initial findings of the research to date by examining a sample of the sites examined. The objective of the work is to develop a methodology to support a rigorous stance on the acceptance of surface water flows into the combined sewer network. The results have not as yet been obtained

    Role of free hydrochloric acid in the low-cost regeneration of ferric chloride etchant by oxygen gas

    This thesis concerns the development of a low cost and environment- friendly method for the regeneration of the most widely used aqueous etchant, ferric chloride, found in photochemical machining (PCM) facilities. In order to implement the above process a comprehensive and automated chemical analysis and control system was designed to fully investigate the key parameters which previous research has suggested play a major role in the analysis of ferric chloride. Monitoring methods have been developed and deployed in a commercial environment such that the etchant could be analysed remotely across the business network or via the internet. This level of monitoring has removed much of the `black art' previously associated with etching and has allowed proactive control of the etchant and the PCM process in general. Detailed analysis of the data captured has resulted in a clear understanding of the role the free hydrochloric acid (HC1) level plays in prolonging the life of the etchant. By keeping the free acid level high, dissolved metals remain in solution. The regeneration uses oxygen from the air, combined with surplus HCI, to regenerate the etchant within the etching machine itself. This environment-friendly system has allowed etching to continue in a very controlled way for nearly one year, during which time some 500kg of metal have been dissolved. This has totally eliminated the need to change the etchant which otherwise would have been carried out every 16 weeks. The saving to the sponsoring company has been over £7000 per year. These combined activities are considered as a major advancement in knowledge and will be of considerable benefit to the PCM industry in general. The monitoring systems alone would significantly benefit any PCM company by reducing rejects and improving product quality and productivity

There are multiple claims about e-learning enhancing learning and teaching (eg. [1] Britain and Liber, 1999; [2]Conole, 2002; [4]Allen, 2003; [5]Littlejohn and Higginson, 2003) such as supporting active learning, facilitative rather than didactic teaching and increased student motivation but these are not pre determined outcomes. Much depends on how lecturers use the available technology and how students respond to that use. This paper reports on a research project which has evaluated the students' own experience of on-line learning at the University of Hertfordshire. Using its own institution-wide MLE (StudyNet) academic staff at the university have been able to offer students on-line access to their study material from September 2001. Activities available for students using StudyNet include participating in discussion forums, using formative assessment materials and accessing journal articles as well as viewing and downloading courseware for each of their courses. Students were invited to participate in a questionnaire and focus groups to identify the characteristics of the on-line learning environment which benefited their learning

    A search for N-type galaxies

    A large number of distant clusters of galaxies was examined for the presence of a bright compact galaxy or blue stellar object. Nearly 600 square degrees of sky were searched using glass copies of the National Geographic Society-Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates, and over 20 fields were selected for observation. The objects were examined for infrared and ultraviolet excesses, using wideband filter photography and spectroscopy. Initial findings include a faint, distant cluster of galaxies near the quasi-stellar radio source 4C 37.43 with a red shift of 0.370. One of these galaxies has an emission line at 6895 A, indicating a possible red shift of 0.377 of the 5007 A line of (0 III)

    A cost comparison of traditional drainage and SUDS in Scotland

    The Dunfermline Eastern Expansion (DEX) is a 350 ha mixed development which commenced in 1996. Downstream water quality and flooding issues necessitated a holistic approach to drainage planning and the site has become a European showcase for the application of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). However, there is minimal data available regarding the real costs of operating and maintaining SUDS to ensure they continue to perform as per their design function. This remains one of the primary barriers to the uptake and adoption of SUDS. This paper reports on what is understood to be the only study in the UK where actual costs of constructing and maintaining SUDS have been compared to an equivalent traditional drainage solution. To compare SUDS costs with traditional drainage, capital and maintenance costs of underground storage chambers of analogous storage volumes were estimated. A whole life costing methodology was then applied to data gathered. The main objective was to produce a reliable and robust cost comparison between SUDS and traditional drainage. The cost analysis is supportive of SUDS and indicates that well designed and maintained SUDS are more cost effective to construct, and cost less to maintain than traditional drainage solutions which are unable to meet the environmental requirements of current legislation
