Anti‐A Production by a Group 0 Spleen Transplanted to a Group A Recipient
Abstract. A group A1 diabetic received a pancreas‐spleen transplant from a group 0 donor. Severe immune hemolysis due to anti‐A ensued, requiring graft splenectomy. The transplanted spleen can be a potent source of blood group antibody. © 1985 S. Karger AG, Base
Red cell antibody problems in 1000 liver transplants
Liver transplant patients frequently require large amounts of blood. The frequency and nature of their red cell (RBC) antibody problems were examined. Records were reviewed in 496 adults and 286 children undergoing 1000 consecutive transplants. Twenty‐two percent of adults and 14 percent of children had RBC alloantibodies. Antibodies of potential clinical significance were found before transplant in 6.3 percent of adults and 1.0 percent of children; despite immunosuppression, they appeared 1 to 5 weeks after transplant in an additional 7.5 and 5.2 percent respectively. These antibodies probably represented secondary immune responses. Of 58 transplant patients with prior potentially significant antibodies, 8 required 7 to 110 units of antigen‐untyped blood after 8 to 28 units of antigen‐negative blood; of these patients, one had subsequent hemolysis. Positive direct antiglobulin tests in 24 percent of adults and 10 percent of children were most often thought to be due to nonspecific adsorption of IgG. Anti‐recipient ABO antibodies developed in 22 of 60 (37%) evaluable ABO‐unmatched grafts; 13 cases had associated hemolysis. In all, 36 percent of adults and 20 percent of children had diverse RBC antibody problems. Resolution of these problems is an important part of the laboratory support necessary for a liver transplantation program. 1989 AAB
Neuropilin-1 Controls Endothelial Homeostasis by Regulating Mitochondrial Function and Iron-Dependent Oxidative Stress.
The transmembrane protein neuropilin-1 (NRP1) promotes vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and extracellular matrix signaling in endothelial cells (ECs). Although it is established that NRP1 is essential for angiogenesis, little is known about its role in EC homeostasis. Here, we report that NRP1 promotes mitochondrial function in ECs by preventing iron accumulation and iron-induced oxidative stress through a VEGF-independent mechanism in non-angiogenic ECs. Furthermore, NRP1-deficient ECs have reduced growth and show the hallmarks of cellular senescence. We show that a subcellular pool of NRP1 localizes in mitochondria and interacts with the mitochondrial transporter ATP-binding cassette B8 (ABCB8). NRP1 loss reduces ABCB8 levels, resulting in iron accumulation, iron-induced mitochondrial superoxide production, and iron-dependent EC senescence. Treatment of NRP1-deficient ECs with the mitochondria-targeted antioxidant compound mitoTEMPO or with the iron chelator deferoxamine restores mitochondrial activity, inhibits superoxide production, and protects from cellular senescence. This finding identifies an unexpected role of NRP1 in EC homeostasis

The life and works of Jeremiah Joyce
This thesis traces the life and works of Jeremiah Joyce (1763-1816). Chapter 1 introduces Joyce and presents the methodology applied in the production of the thesis. Chapter 2 traces his upbringing as a Presbyterian dissenter and his experiences as a glazier's apprentice in Georgian London. It also gives an account of the influence of Arian and Unitarian teachers on Joyce and the education he received at Hackney College. Chapter 3 records Joyce's activities in radical metropolitan societies and his involvement in the 1794 Treason Trials. Chapter 4 explores Joyce's early writings produced whilst in the employment of the Earl of Stanhope. Chapter 5 gives an account of Joyce's life as a jobbing author in the first sixteen years of the nineteenth century.
Chapter 6 is the largest chapter and traces Joyce's works. The chapter is organised around Joyce's publishers and explores his many titles, some of which were published under pseudonyms. It probes the nature of Joyce's work as a writer, compiler and editor, and the different strategies he used to present scientific knowledge. It also traces the compromises between the theological, pedagogical and commercial concerns which dictated the form and content of the works.
The thesis is concerned to resurrect Joyce as an interesting figure whose importance as a political activist and science educationalist has hitherto been overlooked. His life and work is cast against the influences of the French Revolution on British society. In the early 1 790s, Joyce was engaged in political education and the distribution of radical literature. From the later 1790s, his energies were focused on science education. The thesis traces this transition as revealed in Joyce's personal history and literary output
Impact of Scottish vocational qualifications on residential child care : have they fulfilled the promise?
This article will present findings from a doctoral study exploring the impact of 'SVQ Care: Promoting Independence (level III)' within children's homes. The study focuses on the extent to which SVQs enhance practice and their function within a 'learning society'. A total of 30 staff were selected from seven children's homes in two different local authority social work departments in Scotland. Each member of staff was interviewed on four separate occasions over a period of 9 months. Interviews were structured using a combination of repertory grids and questions. Particular focus was given to the assessment process, the extent to which SVQs enhance practice and the learning experiences of staff. The findings suggest that there are considerable deficiencies both in terms of the SVQ format and the way in which children's homes are structured for the assessment of competence. Rather than address the history of failure within residential care, it appears that SVQs have enabled the status quo to be maintained whilst creating an 'illusion' of change within a learning society
Analysing the role of football in building social cohesion in war-affected Uganda
Madeleine Issitt and Aloh Francis find out just how successful football is in developing social harmony in post-conflict areas
Performing Miracles: The real magic behind the performance
Whilst the study of magic, for many years, has examined the mechanics of legerdemain there remains the need for a reflective analytical and pedagogical framework that can be utilised for the exposition and development of the close-up magician’s practice.
As a premise, if there are two magicians, Magician A has the best sleight of hand in the world but lacking in performance skills; and Magician B can competently execute ten tricks but has excellent performance – to the layperson, who is the better magician?
This text synthesises the theories of magic and performance, in order to create a new analytical tool for the improvement of the skills of the close-up magician. It takes Kowzan’s (1968) 13 Point System as its basis to formulate a new analytical tool. The Issitt 12-point System can be used to analyse a performance of close-up magic and assist in the teaching of performance skills. It offers that the close-up magician’s set comprises three discrete areas: Technical Ability, Performance and Audience Relationship. It suggests that a close-up magician’s practice can be enhanced when all the elements within the new System are considered.
The Issitt 12-point System has been tested on the writer’s own practice, that of an apprentice magician, and an expert in the field of close-up magic, Fay Presto.

Discipline, level, genre:Integrating situational perspectives in a new MD analysis of university student writing
While there have been many investigations of academic genres, and of the linguistic features of academic discourse, few studies have explored how these interact across a range of university student writing situations. To counter misconceptions that have arisen regarding student writing, this paper aims to provide comprehensive linguistic descriptions of a wide range of university assignment genres in relation to multiple situational variables. Our new multidimensional (MD) analysis of the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus identifies clusters of linguistic features along four dimensions, onto which academic disciplines, disciplinary groups, levels of study and genre families are mapped. The dimensions are interpreted through text extracts as: (1) Compressed Procedural Information vs Stance towards the Work of Others; (2) Personal Stance; (3) Possible Events vs Completed Events; and (4) Informational Density. Clusters of linguistic features from the comprehensive set of situational perspectives found across this framework can be selected to inform the teaching of a ‘common academic core’, and to inform the design of programmes tailored to the needs of specific disciplines
