    Supersymmetry-Breaking Nonlinear Sigma Models

    We consider a novel class of constraints on chiral superfields to obtain supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in four spacetime dimensions, which strictly combine the internal symmetry breaking with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The resultant massless modes can be exclusively Nambu-Goldstone bosons without their complex partners and the goldstino that is charged under the internal symmetry.     Interaction and cross-talk between non-coding RNAs.

    Non-coding RNA (ncRNA) has been shown to regulate diverse cellular processes and functions through controlling gene expression. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) act as a competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) where microRNAs (miRNAs) and lncRNAs regulate each other through their biding sites. Interactions of miRNAs and lncRNAs have been reported to trigger decay of the targeted lncRNAs and have important roles in target gene regulation. These interactions form complicated and intertwined networks. Certain lncRNAs encode miRNAs and small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs), and may regulate expression of these small RNAs as precursors. SnoRNAs have also been reported to be precursors for PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) and thus may regulate the piRNAs as a precursor. These miRNAs and piRNAs target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and regulate gene expression. In this review, we will present and discuss these interactions, cross-talk, and co-regulation of ncRNAs and gene regulation due to these interactions

    Frequency dispersion amplifies tsunamis caused by outer-rise normal faults

    Although tsunamis are dispersive water waves, hazard maps for earthquake-generated tsunamis neglect dispersive effects because the spatial dimensions of tsunamis are much greater than the water depth, and dispersive effects are generally small. Furthermore, calculations that include non-dispersive effects tend to predict higher tsunamis than ones that include dispersive effects. Although non-dispersive models may overestimate the tsunami height, this conservative approach is acceptable in disaster management, where the goal is to save lives and protect property. However, we demonstrate that offshore frequency dispersion amplifies tsunamis caused by outer-rise earthquakes, which displace the ocean bottom downward in a narrow area, generating a dispersive short-wavelength and pulling-dominant (water withdrawn) tsunami. We compared observational evidence and calculations of tsunami for a 1933 Mw 8.3 outer-rise earthquake along the Japan Trench. Dispersive (Boussinesq) calculations predicted significant frequency dispersion in the 1933 tsunami. The dispersive tsunami deformation offshore produced tsunami inundation heights that were about 10% larger than those predicted by non-dispersive (long-wave) calculations. The dispersive tsunami calculations simulated the observed tsunami inundation heights better than did the non-dispersive tsunami calculations. Contrary to conventional practice, we conclude that dispersive calculations are essential when preparing deterministic hazard maps for outer-rise tsunamis

    “All-on-Four”コンセプトに基づいて即時荷重を適用したインプラントの力学解析

    PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical behavior of immediately loaded implants in an edentulous mandible according to the "All-on-Four" concept. METHODS: A 3D-finite element model of an edentulous mandible was constructed. Four implants were placed between the bilateral mental foramen according to "All-on-Four" concept. A framework made of titanium or acrylic resin between the bilateral first molars was modeled. Immediate loading and a delayed loading protocol were simulated. A vertical load of 200N was applied at the cantilever or on the abutments region of the distal implants, simulating the absence of a cantilever. RESULTS: The peak principal compressive strains in the immediate loading models resulted in 24.0-35.8% and 26.4-39.0% increases compared with the delayed loading models under non-cantilever loading and cantilever loading, respectively. The loading position greatly affected the principal compressive and tensile strain values. The peak principal compressive strains in non-cantilever loading resulted in a 45.3-52.6% reduction compared with those in cantilever loading. The framework material did not influence the peak compressive and tensile strain. The maximum micromotion at the bone-implant interface in the immediate loading models was 7.5-14.4μm. CONCLUSIONS: Mandibular fixed full-arch prostheses without cantilevers may result in a favorable reduction of the peri-implant bone strain during the healing period, compared with cantilevers. The maximum micromotion was within the acceptable limits for uneventful implant osseointegration in the immediate loading models.     In the urinary tract, foreign body is most commonly found in the urinary bladder. But it is anatomically very difficult for a man to self-insert a long object into the urinary bladder. Here we report a case of a 49-year-old Japanese man who has inserted a 140-cm vinyl tube in the bladder for masturbation. He could not retrieve it, and the bladder foreign body remained in this position for about two years. He was referred to our hospital and open surgery was performed

    Enumerated sparse extraction of important surgical planning features for mandibular reconstruction

    [2020 42nd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society (EMBC 2020); Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 20-24 July 2020]Because implicit medical knowledge and experience are used to perform medical treatment, such decisions must be clarified when systematizing surgical procedures. We propose an algorithm that extracts low-dimensional features that are important for determining the number of fibular segments in mandibular reconstruction using the enumeration of Lasso solutions (eLasso). To perform the multi-class classification, we extend the eLasso using an importance evaluation criterion that quantifies the contribution of the extracted features. Experiment results show that the extracted 7-dimensional feature set has the same estimation performance as the set using all 49-dimensional features

    マウスガードの自律神経活動への影響 : 瞳孔フラッシュ応答による定量的評価

    Background:Recently, it has been reported that mouth guards (MGs), which reduce the incidence and severity of traumatic oral injuries in contact sports, may actually affect sports performance. We have observed that a majority of subjects showed improved dynamic visual acuity during head rotation when using a MG, but subjects who were unwilling to use a MG showed the opposite effect. Thus, we hypothesized that unpleasant sensations due to MGs may decrease sports performance.Methods:In this study, we measured autonomic nervous system activity to evaluate unpleasant sensations objectively and quantitatively by measuring the pupillary flash response (PFR) and heart rate variability (HRV), before, during, and after wearing 3- and 5-mm-thick custom-made MGs in 10 healthy subjects.Results:It was found that the 5-mm MG had a higher incidence of unpleasant sensations (50% of subjects) than did the 3-mm MG (10%). PFR (not HRV) analysis showed that both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activities increased in subjects with unpleasant sensations.Conclusions:We suggest that the unpleasant sensation induced this unusual autonomic nervous system response, which could not be detected by traditional methods such as HRV analysis.     Grazing on Microcystis (Cyanophyceae) by testate amoebae with special reference to cyanobacterial abundance and physiological state

    We examined the growth of testate amoebae preying on Microcystis whose physiological states were different in laboratory experiments and a hypertrophic pond. We prepared three experimental systems using water samples dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa: light incubation (control), dark incubation (dark), and light incubation with addition of nitrogen and phosphorus (+NP). In all the systems, the colony density of M. aeruginosa decreased slightly during incubation. Physiological activity of phytoplankton as determined by chlorophyll fluorescence was high and almost constant in the control and +NP systems, whereas it decreased in the dark system. Cell densities of testate amoebae increased in the control and +NP systems, whereas in the dark system they remained low. Thus, growth of the amoebae was low in the systems where physiological activity of Microcystis was low. In a hypertrophic pond, cell density of testate amoebae increased and remained high when M. aeruginosa predominated. Cell density of testate amoebae increased remarkably, simultaneously with the increases in M. aeruginosa colony density and phytoplankton physiological activity. We also found a significant correlation between densities of M. aeruginosa colonies and testate amoebae. We suggested that the physiological activity of Microcystis is one important factor affecting the growth of testate amoebae grazing on Microcystis

    Automated Planning with Multivariate Shape Descriptors for Fibular Transfer in Mandibular Reconstruction

    Objective: This paper introduces methods to automate preoperative planning of fibular segmentation and placement for mandibular reconstruction with fibular flaps. Methods: Preoperative virtual planning for this type of surgery has been performed by manual adjustment of many parameters, or based upon a single feature of the reconstruction. We propose a novel planning procedure formulated as a non-convex minimization problem of an objective function using the multilateral shape descriptors. Results: A retrospective study was designed and 120 reconstruction plans were reproduced using computed tomography images with oral surgeons. The proposed automated planning model was quantitatively compared with both the existing model and the surgeons’ plans. Conclusion: The results show that the developed framework attains stable automated planning that agrees with the surgeons’ decisions. Significance: This method addresses trade-off problems between symmetric reconstruction and restoration of the native contour of the mandible
